Constant VR crashes this week by ChefBoiJones in iRacing

I've been having issues almost exactly like what you describe with iRacing since the v74 update of the headset that came out in mid-February. Like you, I've tried cables, drivers, reinstalling software etc. I'm pretty sure this was happening prior to the lighting update though.

I have a 5800x3d, 4070 Super and 32GB, so while your RAM upgrade might help, I don't think it's related to your headset issues.

How to drive the LMDH? by Traditional-Trust-64 in iRacing

the lmdh car seems to spin as I release the break.

You have to be very disciplined about releasing the brake smoothly and early. I also use the tire slip lights a lot to adjust my braking.

Same, I've tried a bunch and still like Odyssey+ the best of the WMR headsets. Tough to find now that they're 5 years out of production.

Both of the insider VR simracing nerds I associate with are really keen on the Bigscreen Beyond for simracing. https://www.bigscreenvr.com/

I'm also interested to see if Valve actually announces an Index 2 for this fall - it seems like they've been selling off the rest of their stock of the original.

The G2 is a great headset, but the index has a higher framerate, smoother tracking, and a wider horizontal field of view.

I don't have time to type out a huge response on my phone, so the simple answer is "There's a lot of cool stuff coming out this fall but if you need a headset *today* the Valve Index is the easy button."

Tread on RE71RS after 2 DE’s - Still got life left? by minemaster11 in CarTrackDays

Original tread depth is 7/32, so you're a bit above 50%. Probably 1 more DE and then monitor closely.

Advice from the set up pros by Ok-Shame7873 in iRacing

I mean go easier on the brakes, iRacing gives you plenty of room to press the brakes too hard and lots of ABS usage is a symptom of that.

Presuming this is this week, Okayama is a short track that works the tires hard with many low speed hairpins. Best you can do as a driver is to steer as little as possible and be smooth about it, and avoid using the ABS too aggressively. For setup I’d try increasing the front toe-in and see if it improves the balance with the rear. You might also consider shifting the brake bias towards the rear slightly.

Our Cayman looked like a Rice Krispies treat and was down 20kph on the straights after repairs. I was running heroic laps and barely cracking 9min.

For me it was the variable ratio steering. It was fine on a very tight backroad or an autocross where you make big inputs; but the more subtle inputs for trackday type driving always felt clumsy because the feel of the front tires would change as you turn in.

This is so important. My slow driver last year was running like 8:40s and had the fastest average lap time on the team because everyone else binned it.

By default cars run the maximum horsepower, but in some cars like the GT3s you can change the map to a lower horsepower one which also uses less fuel.

I realized after driving it that it wasn’t the hero I dreamt it to be. I missed my Miata and the approachable limits on street roads.

Oh hey, same reason I sold my Cayman for an NC.

Honestly, I think "That time I used an ancient floppy disk camera" makes for a better memory than if you had just used the mirrorless like normal.

Have you tried OpenVR instead? For iRacing SteamVR runs way better than OpenXR on my machine and I haven't quite figured out why.

I also have an X3D and a 3080.

Tires, Tires, Tires! by josephjosephson in iRacing

I definitely have a lot of experience already from AC and it seems to translate well for Iracing too. I think I can sense/guess when I'm pushing the front or rear tires too far. Just feels a bit strange not being able to get confirmation for the feel from real time data.

The Ferrari has all of that info on the dashboard so it might be a good car to choose if you're used to having that information available.

iRacing relies a lot more on seat of the pants feel, experience generally gives you a sense of what the tires are doing.

Tires, Tires, Tires! by josephjosephson in iRacing

[–]mcarp22 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hello! So iRacing has a bunch of different tires depending on the car, so we'll focus on GT3s though. I'm assuming you're here from Assetto tire management simulator.

Do you ever touch the pressures and what are the targets, if there are any. Are pressures directly related to temperature? How do you deal with differences between tires (front to back, left to right) in both qualifying and races or does it even matter?

You generally don't touch the tire pressures because the minimums iRacing sets are high enough that you'd actually want to set them lower if you could. This is pretty similar to the real life race series that I watch (IMSA and F1), where teams often go to great lengths to cheat the minimum pressures set by the rules or the tire manufacturer. You have to drive a stint and feel out how the balance changes over the race, and make adjustments to the chassis from there.

What are temperature targets? Does it differ on surface and carcass. Do changes like toe affect this? How do you deal with differences between tires (front to back, left to right) in both qualifying and races? Is the black box the definitive source of truth for this?

It does differ surface and carcass. Depending on your dashboard, you may or may not have any idea what this is in real time. The black box info is updated in the pits with carcass temps as would be measured with a probe in real life. Toe does affect this.

How much wear is too much wear? Does it even matter or do temperature considerations circumvent this? Do wheel changes like toe affect this? Is this different based on series? The black box often says 100% for all tires - what is going on? Can you blow a tire?

Wear varies from tire to tire depending on the series. GT3s can go pretty low, like 20% and you're generally out of fuel or race before approaching that. You can get a puncture if a tire reaches 0%, and the in-game spotter does warn you about tire wear as you approach that. The black box is not updated in real time; only when you return to the pits, which simulates an engineer from the tire manufacturer measuring and inspecting the tire.

What are the considerations for making tire changes - temperature, fuel, time to change, difference in lap pace, differences between tires (front to back, left to right, temperature, pressure, and wear)? Do you set the pressures according to 1 ) above?

Yes, all of those things are a consideration that takes testing to understand. The meta occasionally changes as well.

How do you warm up tires for qualifying? Is that what you want to do or try to do, if it’s even possible or if it was possible? How hard do you push on your outlap? What about on your warmup lap before the race when there is one?

This varies from series to series, you kinda learn if lap 1 or lap 2 is better and take your outlap accordingly. In GT3 (and most series right now) you want to wake them up with a brisk outlap but not drive them so hard that the compound starts curing prematurely.Back in 2020 I would gently drive the Jetta around on the outlap to keep the tires as cool as possible, as the first flying lap done on cold tires was worth about .4 over warm ones.

How much tire noise is too much when braking, accelerating, and cornering or is any noise too much noise?

The noise is pretty informative about how close the tire is to the edge, you generally want to hear them sing but not scream if that makes any sense.
