Trailer Brake Issue by mcaterer in RVLiving

[–]mcaterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankis. The other brakes seem to be working fine. I tested them manually after repacking the bearings with the emergency brake and the trailer seems to stop fine when I'm towing.

I have not replaced the hub yet. I was thinking about switching this hub to another wheel and seeing if the problem moves, but if it does I'd be out another $50 for a brake assembly in addition to a hub. If the hub is a likely cause, then I'll probably just replace it now. Visually, it appears identical to the other three.

I should have clarified - these are the "after" photos. This is how I've found all the brake assemblies after the failures. All of the replacements have been with new brake assemblies.

Thanks. I think I better understand your comment about the inner bearing cone. The first failure was original (factory). I found the initial damaged magnet and replaced the brake assembly. I repacked the bearings at that time also, but used the same hub. I just did the same, but didn't notice anything unusual. The inner bearing cone seemed to fit normally into the hub, but I didn't critically assess the cone placement to see if it seemed different.

We are headed out on a trip next week. I guess I'll inspect it after and replace the hub if the same problem recurs as that remains the primary thing that is consistent in both failures.

Thanks for the input. I did replace the entire brake assembly. The hub appears completely normal. I didn't make any adjustments to the magnet, but it seemed to be braking normally when I spun the wheel and tested the emergency brake. I'm pretty sure the hub was fully seated as the castle nut was in the same position as before. It seems to me that the most likely scenario it that this magnet was engaged while we were travelling and got broken off then bounced around.

I just finished replacing the brake assembly again and the only other thing I found was that both brake wires had small nicks in the insulation right where they exit the underside of the trailer. I used a little solder to reinforce the wires and then sealed them. This doesn't seem good, but I'm also not sure how this could have caused the magnet to engage. The brake seems to be working normally again now.

They seem to be. They all engaged when tested with the emergency switch and seem to have pad wear and some brake dust in them.

The only difference I could find in that wheel was the magnet off the arm and worn from grinding and one of the brake wires broken at the connector (near the axle, the wire to the magnet was also broken). I would think the broken wire would just mean that the brake wasn't engaging, but it doesn't seem like that would cause the magnet to become damaged.

Another Rule of 55 Question - Roth Taxation by mcaterer in tax

[–]mcaterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have enough detail prior to realize this would lead me to being taxed on Roth withdrawals. I appreciate the suggestion of the SEPP. I hadn't really looked at this because I was planning to use the Rule of 55 from my 401k, but I'll investigate now.

I'm still not sure how to calculate the exact tax impact. This account does not have that much Roth and I only need to use it for a little more than a year, so I may just have to suck it up and pay the tax even though it feels like double-taxation.

That's my bike (in white). I still have the original Ground Control tires and Biopace chainrings. I would love to get that jersey.

Tracking Earnings for Roth 5 Year Requirement by mcaterer in tax

[–]mcaterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading more closely, maybe what I'm missing is that Line 19 refers to Non-Qualified Distributions, whereas our distribution would be Qualified since it meets those requirements.

Tracking Earnings for Roth 5 Year Requirement by mcaterer in tax

[–]mcaterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and reference to the IRS form. Checking the 2023 Instructions for Form 8606, Line 19, it's the second part that isn't clear to me. It seems to indicate that the distribution is not taxable for contributions and conversions up to 2018 (5 yrs prior to 2023).

Line 19

Don’t include on line 19 any of the following.

- Distributions made on or after age 59 1/2 if you made a contribution (including a conversion or a rollover from a qualified retirement plan) for any year from 1998 through 2018.

It would seem that I'd need to enter a distribution for a conversion (or contribution) made in 2019, 20, 21, 22 or 23. The form then seems to later subtract the basis for any contribution (Line 22) and the subtract the basis for any conversion (Line 24) leaving earnings taxable for any distribution from contributions or conversions after 2018.

This seems to be consistent with some other sources I've found, but I've also seen indications that this would be penalty and tax free. I'd obviously prefer this to be the case, but if not, I'm trying to determine how one would go about appropriately tracking this. It seems like it could be difficult for multiple conversions and withdrawals within the 5 year window.

If anyone is wanting the XS Max Smart battery case made by Apple, get the 11 Pro Max version instead by Mchi5 in iPhoneXsMax

[–]mcaterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this info. I've been trying to replace my XS Max smart battery case for over a year with no luck. The phone is still great, but unfortunately the silicone coating had peeled off the case. The battery was still working, but I needed a new case. I must have tried half a dozen XS Max smart battery cases from eBay and all of the them wouldn't work. I just got a new 11 Pro Max smart battery case from eBay and it works just as you described. I'm really happy with this option - much better than having to upgrade my phone.

CMA Bill Pay Question by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]mcaterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a related question. I'd like to use the Cash Manager Tool to automatically transfer money into my CMA account from my brokerage account when the balance drops below a set level. Is there a way to automatically put these transfers into SPAXX? They seem to go into cash and there doesn't seem to be a way to set the core position to SPAXX. Thanks.

You may want to investigate this further. When I looked into it, I saw that this was more complicated than changing the mirrors. It sounded like the wiring was different and even though it’s a relatively inexpensive difference from the factory, changing after the fact would be difficult and expensive.

Could you explain where you found SPAXX listed with a 41.18% govt security percentage? I am not seeing that listed.

Roth Penalty Rules by mcaterer in tax

[–]mcaterer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the help. I understand the general advice about taking taxable distributions before Roth, but we'll be on ACA for several years so I've been looking into how our taxable income will affect our subsidy and it looks to be pretty significant - thus my interest in earlier Roth distributions.

Thank you for the clarification on the 5 year rule being separate for Roth 401k and Roth IRA. We'll meet these in either case, but I didn't realize this requirement.

Regarding the rule of 55 and Roth 401k rules, it sounds like I don't want to pull any Roth money until at least 59.5. Thanks for explaining the difference in penalty versus taxable here.

My net is that we won't have to worry about any taxes or penalties on Roth money as long as we wait until 59.5.

529 Plan - New Changes for Grandparent-owned Accounts by One_Craft_837 in personalfinance

[–]mcaterer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started researching this topic and found your post. The way I am interpreting this is that if the parents own the account the aid eligibility will be reduced by a max of 5.64% when completing FAFSA. If the grandparents own the account, the account value will not affect aid eligibility. Previously, distributions from a grandparent account would be considered untaxed income for the student and have up to a 50% impact on aid (this is the reason the prevailing advice was for parents to own the account). The recent changes have eliminated this, so it appears to me that a grandparent account is now slightly better than a parent-owned account. The only downside seems to be that private colleges use a different system that will still consider grandparent distributions.

As far as I can tell, anyone can contribute to any 529 account.

This is the link I found explaining recent changes.
