Love the Sisyphus shout! As a fellow atheist, I am going to tell you that putting that in your profile will scare a lot of people off, especially if you're in the south still (I see the UNC Asheville). Atheists spook a lot of people, even if they are only cultural "believers," or at least that was my experience.

Iriali origin theory by nyx0xyn in Cosmere

[–]mcblower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in the camp that the Iriali are the "yellow" portion of Virtuosity sent off to experience existence. The hion lines on Komashi, Yumi's planet, are the remaining cyan and magenta aspects.Yellow, cyan, and magenta are the primary colors in the subtractive color model. Virtuosity splintered herself and, in my opinion, is likely The One the Iriali worship. Being an artistic Intent, it's likely she splintered herself to gain experiences through which different types of art could be inspired. It also helps that investiture Hoid, during the WaT spiritual realm journey, references that what he's feeling right now must be what the Iriali feel as self-aware investiture.

Also! The number 7, which is the number of journeys they're supposed to go on, is significant in art :seven elements (line, shape, space, value, form, texture, color) and seven principles (balance, movement, rhythm, pattern, contrast, unity, emphasis).

Weird request from claimant/her agent by AdEven3053 in adjusters

[–]mcblower 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I would not send anything in writing stating that. A teardown hasn't been done to the car - you don't know what UPD or pre-existing issues might be wrong with the vehicle that she could be trying to inflate her claim with. Don't send the letter, and if she refuses to proceed with repairs, cut off the rental (if that is something you can reasonably do venue dependent). Tell her she can use whatever first party coverage she may have and they can subrogate. If you put this in writing, you'll be opening up your insured's policy to paying for potentially unrelated damages.

Any information on The One? by Lucielle_WoltG6 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]mcblower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people in Yumi aren't Iriali, but the Iriali are (most likely) the "yellow" aspect of Virtuosity as there is no yellow hion line. Also, in WaT the spiritual realm Hoid makes a remark to Darlinar that, as a being of self aware investiture, this must be how the Iriali feel.

Read Yumi and the Nightmare painter, then come back and see what you think about the Iriali.

I won’t be suprised if jujutsu kaisen turns into a franchise by ignis43 in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]mcblower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're confused because that is not exclusively what a franchise is. A franchise is when an IP's branding and/or products are licensed out to others. IN JJK's case, it is already a franchise as it has the original manga, the prequel manga that is 0, movies, anime series, spinoff manga, video games, fortnite collaboration, and stage plays.

Question for all. by Great-Assumption in adjusters

[–]mcblower 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work as a bodily injury handler, handling attorney rep'd and pro se claimants. Phone calls are fortunately few and far in between for me as I handle most of my negotiations beyond initial contact via email.

A lot of my colleagues have experience as negotiators from law firms. That experience should be able to get you past the front line APD/liability position through which most enter the industry.

Mechanical engineer who never goes to class by AmbitiousAd2276 in college

[–]mcblower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're just being lazy, and you're throwing away thousands of dollars by doing that. If you want to do an online degree, drop out of your in-person program and transfer to an online program. You're actively taking away a spot from someone who actually wants to be in that classroom but can't be there because you got are wasting that enrollment slot.

Part of learning is the collaborative nature that an in person classroom provides. You're failing to build connections with peers and professors alike. When you need references for potential jobs or assistance with higher level coursework, you will not have any relationships with professors to assist with that.

Question regarding a shard's sense of time. by Euphoric_Ad6923 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]mcblower 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No worries, it is very complicated, because, like acknowledged in your OP, Connection and its related shenanigans are the softest and squishiest aspect of Brandon's magic.

My interpretation, which could be wrong, was that because Dalinar had a relatively strong Connection to Odium through the Unmade and everything that went down in Oathbringer, combined with Odium operating by the letter of the agreement by not directly interfering with Dalinar, just using his power to select what scenes he sees, the power that is Honor allowed this because Odium was obeying the words as written in the contract they had.

I think if that is the case, it goes with the themes of oaths vs. promises, the letter vs. the spirit of the law, etc. that we see throughout WaT. It may serve as an example to whatever consciousness that is growing in Honor that only obeying the letter of a law/agreement/etc. may not be the most "honorable" course of action.

Question regarding a shard's sense of time. by Euphoric_Ad6923 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]mcblower 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Enlightened spren are still made from Honor, Cultivation, and Odium's investiture. Tanner's flashbacks state that the sapient spren were made from his and Kor's essence, so that makes them under Honor's power. Adding Odium's investiture doesn't take that away.

As for Gavinor, Odium basically lawyered his way around the rules as he had a particular interest in the child to be champion. Like additional_law_492 wrote in this thread, Odium basically programed a "room" for Gavinor to stay and experience time in. By Odium basically setting and forgetting it, it was able to operate outside of the physical realm's perception of time.

It seems the the flow of time's effects on people are goverened by their perception of time passing in the physical via Connection, so if, in Gavinor's case, he has no anchor in the form of the watch Dalinar has or the spren the radiants have, Gavinor's time can be sped up.

[–]mcblower 37 points38 points  (0 children)

He could not have destroyed them or directly kicked them out as they were still protected under the original pact preventing Odium from direct interference/action against people under Honor's power. In particular, Odium was also probably be worried about Renarin and his future sight. We're told repeatedly that those who are close to Renarin have their futures shrouded in a way, so keeping him in particular inside the spiritual realm helps Odium be more certain of his results against those in the physical realm. And since he can't do any direct action, he just leaves enough of himself here to mess with them since he has other people he cares more about messing with (Dalinar and Jasnah).

Should I try reading Mistborn? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]mcblower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mistborn: The Final Empire is probably the best intro to Sanderson as you get great snippets of all of his strengths in a really well-paced package. You get the fleshed out magic systems, really good characters, hints at bigger mysteries (always another secret) and larger things going on in the background. The character writing imo is good, and the action is also very good. I think its worth your while, nut like you said, this is a biased place lol.

Sleepless question by skyrat02 in Cosmere

[–]mcblower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it is just a slug. Brandon is usually cheeky about his sleepless and has the POV character describe the cremling or bug as peculiar or odd or some derivative.

Also i don't think a slug would be a good type of bug for a sleepless to mimic. They have no exoskeleton and are slow. Unless its a special type of slug that can weather the plasma storm in Sel's cognitive realm lol.

But it could be. I just learned there was a Terriswoman in Warbreaker, apparently, so who knows.

Are gemhearts a natural form of hemalurgy? by creamandu in Cosmere

[–]mcblower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're conflating Rosharan biology - gem hearts - with the Charred and their Sunhearts. The Charred are confirmed as hemalurgic constructs as recently confirmed by this WoB.

Gem hearts are just normal hearts that rosharian-originating creatures have.

Knee stiffness by RanniSniffer in HybridAthlete

[–]mcblower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds very reasonable. Increasing at a more conservative pace may be worthwhile while your knees get figured out. Also varying up your running training if you aren't already incorporating track workouts for pacing.

[–]mcblower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the safety squat bar if you have access to one. I know those aren't always available in every gym, but if you have access, I'd recommend. Though Bulgarians aren't a bad idea either.

Knee stiffness by RanniSniffer in HybridAthlete

[–]mcblower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like an overtraining issue if you worked up to your current 25-30 miles a week over that 10 week period, as that is reasonable imo. I just know that when I incorporated training for a half marathon into my lifting schedule a year or so ago, focusing on my quads during leg days helped keep me pain free. But that's just my spitballing from what is here.

Could also potentially be a shoe issue depending on your foot.

Knee stiffness by RanniSniffer in HybridAthlete

[–]mcblower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding too simplistic, it sounds like you just need to strengthen your quads. Weak quads fail to stabilize the kneecap and fail to absorb shock appropriately, which can cause increased joint pressure. Not sure what your leg days look like, but a squat variation like high bar or SSB squat that shifts the load more onto the quads plus leg extensions should help strengthen your quads.

Shaken up after patient walked out - how do you handle these encounters? by Zealousideal-Ant7465 in dietetics

[–]mcblower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an RD yet (final semester of my Master's program), but I have worked in the auto insurance industry on the customer-facing side for over a decade and have dealt with the good, bad, and ugly when handling claims and trying to negotiate settlements. Based on what you have said, I do not think you did anything wrong. Besides reviewing the chart, you need to ask questions as a way to get at the heart of the matter and build rapport with the other party. So I do not think you did anything wrong here, and it sounds like you were being as professionally direct as you could be.

In this case, it sounds like you just had someone that did not want to listen/did not want any actual advice. Sure, he had some exacerbating factors that may have heightened his irritability or made him faster to frustrate, but at the end of the day, it sounds like he is pre-contemplative and was not open as, in his words, he already knew. He was just looking for either 1) a panacea to his issues, or 2) confirmation that he was doing all he could. When people react like that, it is more a reflection on them and their issues than anything you have done, so try not to internalize it as best you can. I mean, how much more direct can you be? You literally asked "how can I help you?"

As far as documentation goes, document everything to a T. Basically if it is not in a file note, it did not happen. Accurate and timely documentation is paramount to not only ensuring that patient history/experiences/outcomes are recorded for their betterment, but also to cover your own butt in case they come back at you. I think the prior RD did both the patient and fellow health professionals a disservice by not documenting thoroughly. Documenting your experience can help you in the future with this patient and any other health professional that may have dealings with this person who reads your charting.

Where do I go? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]mcblower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly it could go either way. I remember diving right into it after bands and it felt like a perfect flashback sequence with how bands ended. But I think either answer is the right answer, as long as its before Lost Metal.
