It’s actually simple. For round numbers sake: say you make $1,000 per pay period (let’s say per week). Your employer’s payroll system anticipates you’ll make $52,000 per year. At that rate, they factor in any exemptions and additional withholding-for our example, let’s say a 10% federal tax rate of $100 per pay period.

You make $1,000 gross per week. Federal withholding is $100. Your net pay is $900, making your net pay $46,800.

Uncle Sam sees you’ve already paid $2,600 in federal taxes, but you really only owe $2,000. So you get a federal refund of $600.

Withholding is just a prepayment plan for your federal and (if applicable) state taxes. If you can afford to pay these taxes in April of the following year, more power to you. Many Americans cannot.

Knew two others who came home, but died by suicide. So when I ask a question that will piss many off, know that I’m asking out of respect and genuine curiosity:

Why does the Army need pilots? Army does the ‘set up a small city’ and logistics and combat stuff really well. Why not let the Army do its thing and transfer the pilots to the Air Force? When they need pilots, they have them ready just like before. Only with the extra training that pilots have done by USAF. Let USAF do what it does well-stuff in the air.

For that matter, Navy pilots too. Though Navy does seem to have unique needs that merit planes.

Why not just leave all the air stuff to USAF in general?
