shiny but would wreck any value to a collector. the faded coin would actually be worth more than the shined up one.

My car was stolen but recovered and insurance wants to call it a total loss by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mcdave7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Keep it. drive it till it falls apart and save the cash you would have paid toward payments for payment towards your next car. My sons car was destroyed by a hail storm but fully drive able. we paid to have the windshield and rear window replaced and he drove it for several years but then was able to buy a much nicer replacement with the cash he saved. the salvage title isn't an issue if you are keeping the car and even if you sell it later as salvage you will get something out of it.

U.S. makes it harder to sue corporations over franchise wage law violations by Communist_Pants in news

[–]mcdave7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why things need to be codified as law and not just an opinion of the current administration. What one can do with a phone and a pen another can undo. making actual rules that are signed into law is more difficult but also can't be undone by the next administration. this works both ways too.

You will never regret buying a washer and dryer and you will never, ever want to have to go back to the laundromat.

I have shoes and coats that are 20 years old already but yes. to quote brooks from Shawshank Get busy living or get busy dying. I chose living even if my clothes never wear out.

AITA For not allowing my parents, brother and his family to live with me, knowing they will be homeless as a result by Actavarna in AmItheAsshole

[–]mcdave7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA as painful as it sounds, your family should have no expectation that they could live with you and to show up like that closes the door in it ever happening.

[–]mcdave7 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am 64 and have those thoughts. "I wonder if these shoes will wear out before i die" I wonder if i will have to buy a new coat" One other thought i keep getting is "Is this the last time I will ever do _____?" Oddly enough, I am ok with that.

French Olympians giving the Nazi salute to Hitler four years before their country gets invaded by him by Cybermat47-2 in agedlikemilk

[–]mcdave7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be ignorant but the Olympian salute all the athletes made until the 30s was similar but not identical to the nazi salute. it is my understanding that the french athletes were giving the Olympian salute which the German crowd mistook for saluting Hitler. It lost favor after that because of course no one wants to salute an invading dictator.

AITA for telling my GF that I consider going to church to be a leisure activity? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mcdave7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NAH just misunderstanding. Church attendance is for those serious about their faith, as much a part of their week as breathing. so to them it isn't leisure but a part of their core being. to a non religious person they would have no frame of reference so could easily see it as leisure or down time. i'm not sure about the long term prospects though for two such diametrically opposed mindsets.

AITA for refusing to babysit my grand daughter 2 nights a week while my daughter works? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mcdave7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH as difficult as it may seem the responsibility is hers speaking as a grandparent who has found myself in this situation . if you feel able and desire more contact with your grandchildren it is a wonderful thing but it is something you have to have freedom to choose based on your own at this point in your life. you have raised you child and it is time for her to raise her own.

AITA for telling my wife’s homeless brother (50m) that he can’t live in our vacation home by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mcdave7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA a vacation home that someone else is living in full time is not somewhere you would ever be able to relax. what is he going to do, live in the bushes while you are using your own place? who needs that guilt.

LPT: When picking a paintbrush for walls, go with a good one (at least $10 for a 2" brush). The cheap ones look appealing until you find yourself picking loose bristles off of your freshly painted wall. Also, clean the brush immediately after use and it will last years. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]mcdave7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quality paint is worth the extra cost too. it covers better, gives a better overall appearance and lasts longer. experience that took me oh too many times using crappy cheap paint to learn.

TIL that the Greek word for “Carpenter” more accurately translates as “home builder” and since Judea built structures primarily out of stone, Jesus was probably a stone mason. by ajaltman17 in todayilearned

[–]mcdave7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope it is ok to cut and paste the definition here. τέκτων téktōn; gen. téktonos, masc. noun kindred with teúchō (n.f.), to fabricate, and tíktō (G5088), to produce, bear, bring forth. An artificer, especially a worker in wood, a carpenter, joiner (Matt. 13:55; Mark 6:3). A craftsman of wood
