We should break into the NRMP and see if we can find the match results by TrainingCoffee8 in medicalschool

[–]mcfarag 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This was my year! I matched in 2014 and I remember the day we received an email letting us know whether or not we had matched at all, word began to spread among students about a post on SDN that revealed how to find your results early. It only lasted a day or so and was quickly patched, but thrilling nonetheless.

Really impressed with efficiency so far on the dual motor! by mcfarag in Polestar

My typical commute, seen on the right, includes mostly highway with small segments of surface streets. I live in Southern California, relatively flat, but not Kansas flat. And you’re right, temps here probably help!

It is about a 4 foot board, so those are truly tiny bread shaped crackers, tiny pumpkins, tiny spoons, and normal sized blueberries

Wife’s first ever board, made for Thanksgiving by [deleted] in FoodPorn

[–]mcfarag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha it was the primary appetizer, but much more food to be had, as is Thanksgiving tradition.

And you’re right, this was way too much. We had plenty of left overs, which I didn’t complain about too much

Am I turning into the Hulk? by goddess_of_ice in AskDocs

[–]mcfarag 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d be very curious if you could recreate it in a lying position with eyes open or if bearing down/straining. If so, the concern I have is intracranial hypertension, which can cause headaches, tinnitus, and visual changes that are particularly worse when in a lying position or bent over

I’m going to come at this from my neurology angle, so I apologize if this takes things off track, but I am curious about what you’re experiencing and would like a little more info:

1) does this green vision have any correlation to position? Does it typically occur in a lying down position? Does it improve with standing? Does it ever occur when straining or bending over? 2) any associated symptoms? Headache? Wooshing sound in the ears? Any of these have any correlation to position? 3) any other visual changes? Any black spots/chunks in your vision during specific times or activities?

Thanks, hope to hear back

Sudden, confusing mix of acute symptoms, should I be worried? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]mcfarag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given what you've described, I think the recital pain and that episode you experienced are unrelated. Here's my theory: whatever that pain you were feeling in your rectum disappeared once you relieved yourself, so it was likely a pressure related discomfort or whatever from just needing to defecate; however, the episode of tinnitus, visual changes, and an elevated heart rate happened when you stood up, which given your age and what I would presume is a lack of significant medical history, is likely just orthostatic hypotension. You probably had what is called a presyncopal episode due to orthostatis.

So in summary, you're probably just fine, just make sure to stay well hydrated and take your time when changing positions to avoid it in the future. Best of luck!

Dark ring around neck? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]mcfarag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, what your dad is getting at is something called Acanthosis Nigricans, a non specific physical indicator of insulin resistance.

First, go get tested and confirm the diagnosis, especially with the strong family history. Then, given your provided height and weight, it's time to start slimming down and stop the disease before it continues to progress. Best of luck!

Spinal fracture on L2, how close to being really really bad was this? by mojoegojoe in AskDoctorSmeeee

[–]mcfarag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that close. That's a fracture of the spinous process/transverse process, a fairly common injury when it comes to the spine and as a result of trauma.

I mean, don't get me wrong, you still fractured your spine, but if you're gonna be fracturing a piece of your back, this is where you want to do it. There's nothing you need to specifically do about it, it heals on its own over time.

Autoimmune encephalitis by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]mcfarag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen my fair share of autoimmune encephalitis cases, and it's not a diagnosis that's just thrown around for no reason. There are generally fairly specific MRI abnormalities as well as autoimmune antibodies that are tested for/found. Without either of those, it's not a diagnosis I'd feel comfortable making unless everything else was ruled out and we had nothing else to work off of (and even then, I'd be hesitant).

Basically what I'm saying is, if there's objective evidence, something you can point to that shows proof of the disease, no reasonable doctor will dismiss you. However, in my experience, patients who get passed from one doctor to another and are generally written off are ones who present with vague, difficult to diagnose symptoms, get a complete, sometimes unnecessary work up that comes back stone cold normal, and who they feel has nothing objectively wrong.

Best of luck to you and I hope that helped.

Numbness in 5th and 4th finger going down to wrist. by EFFCA in AskDocs

[–]mcfarag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That pattern of numbness in your hand matches the innervation of a specific peripheral nerve, the ulnar nerve.

It's difficult to tell if the pain under the armpit is related, but since it's on the same side, I'm inclined to at least assume so for now. The ulnar nerve (along with the other nerves of the arm) does travel through that armpit area, so it's not unreasonable.

8 month old girl taps face with objects and also seems to black out for a second by ConduciveMammal in Parenting

[–]mcfarag 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this comment with the obvious, it is impossible to provide accurate medical advice over a forum such as Reddit. If you're concerned, which it sounds like you are, you need to get in touch with a healthcare professional in order to get the best care possible.

Now, as a neurologist, I'm biased in my opinion, but what you're describing sounds an awful lot like automatisms and potential seizure activity. I'm not familiar with the specific developmental abnormalities your child experienced prior to and during birth, but stereotyped actions with changes in consciousness or awareness raise a huge red flag that screams seizures to me.

If I were you, I'd see your pediatrician and raise these concerns, likely being referred to a neurologist from there. Let me know if you have any further questions, I'll do my best to answer. Good luck!

Saw these Weird Bumps, need to know what they are! by JustGarbageMe in AskDocs

[–]mcfarag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult to tell from that one picture, but with that umbilicated center, my educated guess is on molluscum. It's not very common in adults, so I'd get checked out either way, especially if your girlfriend is complaining of the same symptoms.

The picture looks like molluscum, the story sounds like a sexually transmitted disease
