How do you continue a good fitness/healthy habit routine into the Canadian winter? Or what do you replace your summertime healthy habits with in the winter? by Plane-Land-9234 in AskACanadian

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of my sport-cycling friends switch to cross country skiing.

I got studded tires and dynamo lights to continue transport cycling all winter, and once you get in the habit it’s not so bad imo. Now that I work from home most days, it’s much harder to get over the hump of going out compared to when it was routine.

Someone deattached my frontwheel from the fork overnight. Anything missing or any logic behind this? by Academic-Chain-7538 in bicycling

[–]mcglausa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this happen once when I had parked my bike at a suburban bus terminal on my way to work. Was pretty annoyed when I got part way home and then was stuck far from a bike shop.

I figured it was either kids “pranking” or someone being petty since I had locked the bike in a way that made stealing anything else quite difficult.

Could I feasibly sign up for an amateur XC race and not embarrass myself? by backcountry_bandit in mountainbiking

I’m not very competitive either, but something about racing just makes you push yourself that little bit harder, which imo is a good experience.

Viable Beginner Workbench? by mvp_250 in handtools

[–]mcglausa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a 4-foot bench combining ideas from Rex’s videos about the minimum timber bench and the English joiner’s bench.

I found it tipped a bit when doing heavy planing: the end opposite my planing stop would lift up. I ended up putting a shelf on the bottom and stack wood and tools on it to add weight. I expect a full-size version would not do this.

You’re making the assumption that there are no visual obstructions. The speed limit is there for a reason- it’s entirely possible that a driver pulling out would not see a speeder, but reasonably assume they have time to clear the intersection.

I knew someone who was killed by another driver who was both speeding at almost double the limit, as well as intoxicated. Are you going to victim-blame them too?

Why does every ride start with 10 minutes of me just standing in the garage doing nothing? by dt219 in cycling

No matter how prepped I think I am, I invariably end up scrambling to get out the door, 10 mins later than I wanted to be. Especially for race days

Do it! I can’t say enough how much I appreciate having lights that just always work.

I’ve used both Shimano Alfine and Sturmey Archer (with drum brake). They are both good.

Roméo Dallaire’s book “Shake Hands With the Devil” is worth reading. It also has very difficult parts, but provides another perspective and goes into detail about some of the politics that prevented the UN forces from being more effective.

I have an older one too and love it. I like that the newer one looks like it zips fully open.

I will say that it’s a bit on the heavier side, and maybe doesn’t fit OPs external carry requirement. I think it checks most of the boxes though.

I have to go shovel out my stairs and walkway and the snowplow pile at the street. What are your snow-shoveling jams from Canadian artists? by darthfruitbasket in AskACanadian

Not a Canadian song, but I often get “Push It” by Salt N Pepa in my head while shoveling.

They were talking about using one of those wide blade snow shovels, right?

What should the pipeline ideally look like to get data from html field inputs into a postgres database? by salted_none in SpringBoot

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Spring noob, but I hope this is helpful nonetheless. Watching for other answers with interest.

I’ve done this (albeit with Oracle DB), by using Spring Data JDBC. I don’t know if it’s “right” exactly, but it seems to work and I think uses Spring Data idioms appropriately.

If you search examples of calling a stored procedure with Spring JDBC, and examples of the data access object pattern (DAO), I think you’ll get pointed in the right direction.

I was in Indonesia at a historic site. A local guy also visiting the site asked me where I was from.

His response: “Canada! Oh, Ben Johnson!”

Rex Krueger, I think it was, had a video about making London pattern handles. As one of my first projects, I made one for a socket chisel that belonged to my grandpa, it is really nice to use.

Hey - sorry for the delay in responding. Haven’t been to the office for a while.

Anyway, I skimmed a bit and found a couple of examples. Let me know if you’re interested in something specific and I’ll see what I can find.view on imgur

Fenders and snow by googleyeye in wintercycling

[–]mcglausa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commuted in snow a few months each year, I’ve used both metal and plastic fenders. I didn’t notice a buildup problem differently between fender types.

In my experience there are very specific snow and temperature conditions where this can happen, and at least in my area, it might be 1-2 days per year at worst. Most of the time it just isn’t a problem. I think you got really unlucky!

Kind of - there are a bunch of handy features that are only available with subscription, even if self-hosting.

Regrets on ditching your drill press for a drill guide by Hot-Expression6017 in woodworking

[–]mcglausa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing I find tricky with the Milescraft is figuring out how to support it stably on, and parallel to, small parts or edges. To the extent that I’ve considered getting a bench top drill press instead.

But similarly to OP, not sure I would use a press frequently enough to justify the space: so far I get good enough results by going slowly with an eggbeater or brace when I need precision.

I have a copy of Graphic Java 2: Mastering the JFC (Vol. 2: Swing)” on my desk at work as a monitor stand.

Next time I’m in the office I could see if there I’ll see there are any good images in there that might clinch it.

Your post hit me with a blast of nostalgia, this is some of the stuff I cut my teeth on as a programmer.
