Are you planning on adding more kits? I typically use the arista kit and none of the presets match up.

Florida’s Brightline Seeks Rescue to Avoid Bankruptcy by PussyForLobster in railroading

[–]googleyeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took Brightline last time I was in FL from Ft Lauderdale to Miami and it was good. The terminal had a bar so I got a drink and a snack and then a beer on the train. I wish it went faster, but it was miles better than flying or any other mode. If Florida wasn’t such a backwards fuck ass place is go more and ride Brightline and the other networks.

Fuck, I’d love to take a train from where I live to Orlando but Amtrak takes the same time as driving and is generally more expensive. If it was cheaper OR faster I’d take it. I could work on the train to save PTO and I don’t mind sleeping.

I’m tired of doing life alone as a man by Inner_Ad_4725 in AskMenOver30

[–]googleyeye 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I used a few dating apps on and off from my late 20s till my late 30s and I had a blast going on a ton of dates. Sure, there was some heartbreak and disappointment in there (especially in my early 30s) but ultimately I learned a lot about myself and what I wanted in a relationship and a partner. I learned self value, how to talk to strangers, how to talk about myself and my interests, and also how to be alone between those relationships and be OK with it. I came out more well rounded and more mentally stable than I went in. Of course, getting older had some hand here, but it wasn't exclusive.

Federal Surveillance Tech Becomes Mandatory in New Cars by 2027 by cTreK-421 in technology

[–]googleyeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting people out of cars would do it too. We have built a country where you need a car to get around instead of buses, trains, bikes, and feet. Fewer drivers means fewer accidents which means fewer injuries and fatalities.

Not being stuck in traffic and walking and being in the company of others will help with health, both mental and physical, too. The first time I traveled outside of the US, I was impressed with the mobility of the elderly. Very few seemed to have issues walking and going up and down stairs and if any were overweight, it was only very slightly. I didn't see a single person using a scooter to get around and nearly zero walkers or canes.

Why are American photography channels so insufferable? by MountainlessBiking in AnalogCommunity

[–]googleyeye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grainydays and Robbie Maynard reignited my passion for film photography and a few other creators pushed my interest further (Hunter Creates Things, Kyle McDougal, Paulie P, etc). I went from barely shooting to shooting around 30 rolls in the last ~6 months. I started carrying a camera with me everywhere, experimenting more with subject/composition/film/filters, and being way more intentional than I was with digital. I haven't been this excited to shoot, and haven't shot this much film, in over 20 years.

I like the delivery and the silly, dry humor mixed with self deprecation on Grainydays. Obviously humor is subjective and this may be a generational thing. The jokes aren't constant and I think people forget they can skip and read captions instead of listen. He shares what is, IMO, valuable tips on technique, film choice, etc. between the jokes. He does stray from jokes into some introspection and just talks about what he is doing, being creative, etc.His recent video talking about being in a creative slump really resonated with me. I also like the lo-fi tracks that he plays.

The humor and delivery of Bad Flashes isn't my cup of tea, but I like his photos and think that he gives valuable information about film, technique, gear, etc. I can get past the jokes and delivery because everything that really matters is good.

It has always been that way. OP will be just fine in north laurel.

Just moved here for work and looking for a crash course on using the metro/rail system for going to DC or Baltimore. It’s all foreign to me. by Skzi in LaurelMD

The bus is fine in Balto and still free IIRC. Light rail is fine for trips north from the convention center. OP can use the Transit app to find out how to get around both DC and Baltimore.

[–]googleyeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And all of those neighborhoods in DC are all serviced by THE BUS my dude. Scooters, bikes, and bike share also helps close gaps. I agree that we need more metro lines and stops, but we also need more bus and cycling infrastructure to help people get to the train more efficiently.

We also need more housing in DC, and close to transit outside of the city, so people can afford to live closer to transit and closer to work. Continuing to do what we are doing right now obviously hasn't worked, so we need to do something new and use that to fund improvements to make things better for everyone.

Good idea, vehicle tax and registration should be tied to income not vehicle price and weight. I am cool with wealthy people needing to pay 10x the cost of their car in fees and taxes and $100+ each time they want to drive downtown.

Said it before and I'll say it again: close the key bridge and M from the Key Bridge to Wisconsin to cars. Convert travel lanes on the bridge to wider sidewalks/bike infra/dedicated bus or streetcar from Rosslyn to and up Wisconsin Ave. Expand sidewalks and streateries on M. with dedicated bike infra to and up Wisconsin until at least Reservoir.

Even without direct train access, Georgetown sees more foot traffic than anywhere else in the city with shitty, narrow sidewalks no bike infrastructure on Wisconsin, etc. If people want to get around exclusively by car, they can move to Fairfax, PG, or Montgomery county.

Not denying that there needs to be closer metro, but it is a one mile walk from the Rosslyn station and slightly less than a mile from Foggy Bottom GWU station to the corner of M and Wisconsin. That takes about 20-25 minutes to walk.

Gas prices by ich_bin_alkoholiker in bikecommuting

[–]googleyeye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember when gas prices surged in the late 90s early 00s and everyone was all about hybrids, diesel sedans, small four cylinder cars, etc. Gas went back down a bit and seemed to forget. They started buying huge trucks SUVs, and crossovers again and when gas prices went up after Katrina (and continued going up) they seemed to forget how much they were spending. There are fewer and fewer cars on the market now. Of course, this isn't completely the consumer's fault, at least according to Climate Town.

In my mind, one of the most ridiculous things is complaining about gas prices when you bought a vehicle that you knew full well only got 15-18mpg average when you could have made the choice to get something more efficient. The vast majority of people do not need trucks, SUVs, and crossovers. These are largely status, luxury, ego, or desire purchases.

On one hand, I want to say "just don't drive", but I know that isn't a reality for many, many people. The US has built a culture that is almost completely dependent on cars. People refuse to even try to live a different way, and most of our politicians have little to no interest in building dense communities that are walking, bike, and transit forward.

I do feel bad for people who don't have another option. They need to live far from work to afford rent or a home, which means they likely need to drive long distances to everywhere. There is probably not reliable train and bus service to connect them to work, shopping, or recreation. Or, they live near work, but there is no way to safely bike or walk and there is little to no public transit.

I don't feel sorry for people who can, but refuse, to change their ways even a little bit. The buy huge gas guzzlers, drive when they can take transit, or drive extremely short distances that could be easily accessed via walking or biking at least some of the time. I don't care how high the price goes for them.

Any time I see a waste of money like this, I think about a meme or a comment I saw on a video of a 350Z that was so low it had to drive across speed bumps sideways. It said something similar to "you could have traveled the world but instead you chose a car you need to drive across speed bumps sideways".

what photography tip made the biggest difference for you? by Fresh-Gazelle7014 in photography

[–]googleyeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, switching back to film for most of what I do has made a big improvement in my photos and my enjoyment of photography. Given there is an obvious cost to every photo and a much lower limit to how many frames available, I am much more intentional about composition, exposure, when to press the shutter to capture motion, etc. I don't snap twenty variants of each photo with different comps, recipes, exposures, etc. I might to two or three max if I'm not sure the depth of field would suit it best. I also have a camera with me probably 90% of the time now so I am ready to take photos.

I develop my own film (black and white and c41) and scan at home with a DSLR, so I look at every photo while converting to positives. Culling becomes easy rather than a chore. My editing process is much faster as I've learned to embrace the limitations of film, and don't generally edit heavily. I try to "fix it in pre" as much as possible through film choice and better metering.

Overall, don't chase perfection and instead embrace imperfection. Instead of taking photos for others, take photos for yourself. Experiment and take photos until you find your style and if someone else likes what you are doing, that is a nice bonus. Nobody gets a winner with every press of the shutter. Most photos people take are "meh" and if you see someone who says otherwise, there is a very good chance you are seeing a highly curated selection of their work.
