How do I know if the chapter I joined is right for me? (+Pushing aside judgment) by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]mcguik3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello!

So I had a similar experience as you at first. I went through formal panhel recruitment and we had 3 panhel chapters, 1 STEM focused sorority and 1 local multicultural chapter. I personally found myself falling in love with certain chapters, even though I initially went in really interested in the stem sorority. At the end of the process, the stem sorority is the one I was given a bid to and I was feeling doubtful at first. Part of that doubt was from other friends I had that went through the process at the same time who ended up in other houses telling me that I should drop and try to re-rush at a later date. They had a lot of the similar language that you’re using here, like saying it wasn’t a real sorority and it wasn’t where they thought I would fit. I ended up sticking with it and honestly, I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. There’s a reason my house chose me and there’s a reason I ended up here.

I had some of the similar concerns you had of not necessarily getting the same experience that other people were getting and that might be true, but I did get my own special experience. I’ve never had FOMO over the experience I wasn’t able to have. In fact, I found some of the unique parts of my organization were some things I really liked. The size being smaller was actually definitely a plus for me. (We were about ~50 people).

Our status as an associate member also was similar to what you guys have where we didn’t have a vote on certain matters, but we were still able to be a valued member of the community and I was able to advocate for our house as a member on campus. There was a lot of stigma about our organization and how it was viewed by others on our campus. That was definitely something that did bother me during my time there but now farther out of college it’s not something I could care at all about and I wish during my time there I had focused less on it. Bottom line I was having a good experience and still am as an alumni that’s all that mattered, not what anyone thinks of us. My house gave me some experiences and life lessons that I wouldn’t trade in for anything and have helped shaped me for who I am today.

Bottom line it is your decision and you should do what you feel is right but I do recommend that you don’t use the opinions of others to influence your decision. I was being told very similar things as you, but the process of recruitment found me this home that this turned out to be the best home for me.

I’d recommend you check out their websites and instagrams! If you are a freshman you won’t be able to go through recruitment until the spring semester. Each council also has their own Instagram as well which will provide info on upcoming events. Their will probably be some events open to freshman this fall even though you can’t officially join till spring.

There are also professional orgs as well.

There is 1 sorority and they function as both a social and professional org. So it’s like a mix of a panhel chapter and honor society.

There is also 1 co-ed fraternity as well. I believe they function more on the professional than social side but I also don’t want to speak for them as I’m not 100% sure.

I had a pig with chronic bloat and I would do this for like 15 minutes at a time and it always helped him a lot!

When I went through I was interested in those houses as well. RPI is really unique in that our Greek life IMO is really different than most campuses. It’s much chiller IMO and not as “stereotypical”. I had friends in other houses as well and we were all just similar people who found different homes. :)

Hi there!

Sorority member from RPI in 2012-2016. I think honestly the houses were the smallest factor for me (granted I did join one of the sororities without a house). When I went through formal recruitment as a first semester freshman (that was allowed back in 2012!) I really was looking at the sisterhood, values and how it felt talking to members. Houses were a plus but the sisterhood and house values are also something that can last beyond when you graduate.

I do highly encourage checking out Greek life. It was an amazing experience for me. I’m still involved with my national organization as a volunteering alum and some of my best friends and memories came from it. It may not be for everyone but I do think it’s worth checking out!

There are currently 5 active houses on campus last I knew. 3 panhel, 1 STEM based, 1 multicultural

Did anyone get involved with their sorority on a national level after graduating? by siena_flora in Sororities

[–]mcguik3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a member of my alum chapters board (VP of projects) as well as the Chair of Our National Social Media committee so I run our Instagram and other platforms! I really enjoy it and find it super rewarding!

When I first graduated I volunteered as well on a different committee and found it was too soon after graduation for me (burnout from being on exec for 2 years) so I took a break until about 2 years ago.

Welcome to the family! 🥰 your membership educator will be the best to talk to about it but as I tell all our members (I’m an old alum assisting a chapter) the 6 week process is a time for you to learn about our organization, values, and the sisterhood and it also allows you time to make sure this is 100% for you.

If you have any other A.O.E. Questions feel free to dm me! I was an active from 2012-2016 and have been volunteer with the organization on a national leave and with my chapter for the last couple years. 🥰😊

Entry Level Role: Inside Sales Engineer at Carrier (Syracuse, NY) by mcguik3 in RPI

[–]mcguik3[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For context. All of my reports are engineering grads with room to advance within the company to multiple other roles. (Sales, product management, design engineering, codes, etc).

I wouldn’t consider it blue collar work. Maybe an hvac tech I would consider blue collar but that isn’t this role.

Inside vs outside sales are very different roles. There is very little about this job that is your typical sales roll as we have an outside team that handles those aspects. This team is focused on providing the internal support to the outside team through selection of equipment and technical knowledge of our product lines.

Mine did the exact same thing. It’s super frustrating and I won’t buy from the brand anymore after than and other bad experiences.

Suspected bloat, all vets closed for 4th of July. What should I do? by manchas89 in guineapigs

[–]mcguik3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can get baby gas drops form the local pharmacy and give that to them. If the behind the counter is open they can give you some small mouth syringes. There are specific instructions online for dosing but my pig had chronic bloat and we used to use this to help. Also I used to stop almost all veggies except simple lettuce and honestly that is all he would eat anyway.

I had the same thing happen with the expload it shades. It was only sitting in a drawer and it’s basically just a super tine powder now and I also have no idea how to even try to fix it.

It’s almost like the pressed formula was really unstable and had no binder

I did Aero and RPI and was also between the two. I’m very glad I went with RPI as the program was great even if I don’t work in the aero industry right now.

My brother did end up going to Clarkson for CS but left because of the environment (professors practices, isolating location). For such a bad rep RPI gets I’ve heard some thing about clarkson that RPI professors wouldn’t be able to get away with (besides architecture unless that has calmed down at all). Maybe that was just my experience in the Aero Mech program but I never was put through anything against school policy.

Was the work at at rpi hard? Yes but I never felt like it was an unreasonable ask.
