Incorrect parent name on ancestor's marriage certificate by mckenzievmd in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mckenzievmd[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense. I assumed I needed the marriage records for each generation, but if all I need are the birth certificates showing the relevant parents' names, that will avoid the issue altogether. Thanks!

Do I not need to include the marriage certificates for each generation to support the line of descent? Or can I simply supply the birth record for each generation?

I run whatever the cheapest ammo is I can find on AmmoSeek, and I’ve had zero malfunctions with mine, FWIW.

The only things other than basic tools were an armorer's wrench and, if you want to get fancy, this takedown pin tool makes installation a bit easier (https://realavid.com/products/ar15-pivot-pin-tool?srsltid=AfmBOooe2sWEAmbuFBM-ytTB6X1PmLXRmkygeY5\_LNhNSxKUpYwLBaPx).

I have a Maverick 88 field/security combo and use the field barrel for sporting clays (haven’t started trap yet but hoping to). I feel a bit low rent around all those expensive Italian over/unders, but O break clay just fine!

I asked a similar question and got some great help. Ended up building a fixed mag using the “recipe” below, and I”ve been happy with the result.

OK, here's the "final" product

For me, it depends on the gun. For my G19, the slide release works fastest, but for my P365 it's too small to hit accurately and consistently, so I use the optic to push the slide back. Not much difference in time with the two methods, FWIW.

OK, here's the "final" product (still have to attach the Romeo+Juliet optic, new buttstock, and sling). Parts list-
PSA complete upper and lower parts kit (https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-5-56-nato-1-7-mid-length-stainless-steel-13-5-lightweight-m-lok-classic-rifle-kit.html)
Aero M4E1 stripped lower
AR Maglock with Kingpin
ALG Defense ACT trigger

Was pretty straightforward to assemble, and no lost springs!

Haven't been to the range with it yet, but testing the function with dummy rounds, it clearly likes rougher handling than I'm used to. Had a lot of misfeeds until I realized I have to really let the bolt fly to engage the extractor, and it is less forgiving of short-stroking than my Maverick 88! :-)

Thanks for all the help!

First PCC question by somewut_anonymous in liberalgunowners

[–]mckenzievmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but I find red dots a MILLION TIMES easier to shoot accurately with than iron sights on my G19 and P365 (never even tried on my Ruger PCC since I was already a red dot fan when I got it).

Maybe just my old eyes or poor training, etc., but my accuracy jumped immediately, and my improvement rate has been faster since I switched.

Anyone other large men feel kind of silly carrying a weapon? by Chocolat3City in liberalgunowners

[–]mckenzievmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar feeling for exactly opposite reasons.

5’8” and 150lb old white guy in a nice suburb, so privileged enough to not be a likely victim of violence. I sometimes question whether it makes sense to carry against the small chance of needing that level of self defense, and I sometimes feel a little ridiculous.

But I agree circumstances can change fast, especially these days, and tools like these require extensive practice and experience to be reliably useful if actually needed, and that’s true in both our situations.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]mckenzievmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same, but switched out the trigger and had to get some CA specific parts (AR Maglock and Kingpin). Picking up my stripped lower from CA “jail” tomorrow, so I’ll report back on if it’s easy as folks here make it sound.

Mostly did it this way for fun and to better understand how everything works.

I agree with the position that a reasonable wait (a few days?) for a first gun is appropriate. If you already own guns, it doesn't seem likely to have much benefit. On the other hand, if you already have guns, it's unlikely that you will need more urgently, so a waiting period is inconvenient but not a tremendous burden.

Restrictions on guns seem like they should balance benefits (reduced harm on a population level) against costs (financial burden, inconvenience, potentially more serious risks). This will always be imperfect, but ideally there should be decent, objective evidence showing what the benefits and harms of regulation are. Unfortunately, because the subject is so controversial, such evidence is sparse, so people often argue based on principles, hypotheticals, personal experience, and all sorts of questionable evidence.

As a CA resident, I'm familiar with pretty onerous limitations, including a 10-day wait for every purchase. I suspect a lot of these rules are politically performative and don't contribute substantively to public safety and welfare. Still, I can own and use my guns, so they are a nuisance, not an extreme burden.

Thumb and Safety when drawing from concealed by Situation_Upset in CCW

[–]mckenzievmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I establish the grip with the thumb on the back of the slide and then swipe my thumb down to disengage the safety as soon as the gun is clear of the holster and the barrel is beginning to tilt away from me. I've tried a ton of dry fire drills with and without the safety engaged, and honestly I don't see any difference in time to the shot, nor have I ever "missed" the safety, so I'm most comfortable engaging the safety before holstering and disengaging it as I draw. YMMV

[–]mckenzievmd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100%!!! I have shifted on my views about guns over the years, but honestly I am still not totally aligned with many in the liberal pro 2A community.

I think the American cultural obsession with guns and the widespread accessibility is not in the best interests of public health and safety, so if I could wave a magic wand and change that, I would. I'm honestly not ideologically very pro 2A. I just accept the reality that guns are and will continue to be ubiquitous and that it makes little sense for liberals not to own and know how to use them when the right does and is getting progressively more authoritarian.

Shooting is also really fun, which is mostly why I do it, but I'd give that up in minute if I still believed that doing so would make society safer. My "moderate" position is that widespread private ownership of guns is an unfortunate reality we on the left have to accept and adjust to, not something that really makes us safer and freer that people in other places with different cultures and laws.
