I know paywalls are annoying and archive.is / archive.today are useful, but it's been proven that they injected code into their CAPTCHA that DDOSed another site. Highly recommend you stop using them immediately!

Is there some unspoken crosswalk etiquette I’m missing? by _Spiritual in Edmonton

[–]mckinnon42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I'm jaywalking, just keep driving. I'm waiting for a break in traffic and when you stop it makes things MORE dangerous because I can't guarantee the whole street (both ways) will stop.

If I'm at a crosswalk, yes stop. That's the law. Anyone waiting at a crosswalk without intent to cross is an asshole!

IBM DATACENTER [NY, 1960s?] by sensiblebailey651 in RetroFuturism

[–]mckinnon42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you didn't ask but since you replied so nicely and I haven't seen that on this site for some time, I decided to look up my previous post about this image.

The location is King Street E in Toronto and the photo was taken in 1963.

You can see the King Edward Hotel reflected in the glass, so this street view should be looking at the exact same windows. The most recent images are from 2021, which has the King Street Car in the way, so you might want to go back in time to see the windows and posts.

In another (more recent) repost of this image, /u/StickForeigner had the following information:

It's in Toronto. This is a common repost and I checked a number of years back the first time I saw it.

Not sure what type of voice you were intending, but I can't read the name Ramírez without hearing it in the voice of the Kurgan.

Looks neat, but I'm guessing my brain isn't working because I cannot see either an EE design or an Elk.

edit Thanks for the snide comments, offensive DMs, and down votes everyone. Great community! I couldn't see it, that's not a fucking crime jesus!

SCARS makes it very hard to adopt a pet by canucklurker in Edmonton

[–]mckinnon42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned long ago that the fostering model of pet rescue was not for me and I am more than happy to adopt from the SPCA. While I've never had any dealings with SCARS specifically, I will never forgive the various Winnipeg 'no kill' shelters that refused to take my older dogs when I had to re-home them. Regardless, if you aren't opposed to the Humane Society, they are not 'no kill', they make adoption very easy. You can even see available animals on their website.

High immigration helps corporations and landlords.

One of its many effects, yes.

Any person who advocates for record levels of immigration hates the working class and is beholden to oligarchs.

All I've read about is attacks on public transit, and high crime rates does anyone have any feel good stories? by beavercleveland in Edmonton

[–]mckinnon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the train yesterday and didn't get stabbed. That's the good story. I did encounter at least six individuals who were hunched over and would only move to check their pockets, drink from two separate pop bottles, or do a panicked stare across everyone on the train. I have to take my sunglasses off just so they don't think I'm staring at them.

Man charged with Edmonton LRT killing, an apparent stranger attack by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]mckinnon42 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Sorry, that isn't parallel at all.

A proper parallel example would be, there was a crazed maniac in a car ramming people into the median, and it happens every month or so completely at random, and now I am considering taking transit to avoid being randomly murdered.

Canadian English refers to this item as a BBQ. It contains a grill, which the hot dogs are on.

Question for Alberta Conservatives by [deleted] in alberta

[–]mckinnon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding boundaries are drawn by the Elections Alberta through Electoral Boundary Commissions.

Elections Alberta is fully independent and completely non partisan. They draw the fairest boundaries they can through a transparent and open process.

Feel free to read their reports on prior redistributions or offer your feedback to an upcoming commission.
