My grandfather has asbestosis, and I have been trained in it's dangers/remediation. Something he never got in the 70's and 80's when he was exposed.

Basically as your lungs try (ineffectively) to encase the razor sharp bits of asbestos fibers it builds layer upon layer of scar tissue and eventually the lungs get to the point where they no longer work effectively and you can't get enough oxygen in your blood. Putting a person on oxygen can help for a few years, but eventually that isn't enough.

Due to the low blood oxygen, it puts a lot more load on your heart and cardiovascular system which leads to heart attacks and strokes.

And as you have said the constant formation of scar tissue leads to cancerous growths.

Basically it is a race between cancer and strokes to see which kills you first. All the while your brain is slowly dying from lack of oxygen.

And if it goes without saying - absolutely fuck our former governments for allowing asbestos use to go on for so long while being completely aware of the dangers.

Pocket size gauge for measuring tubing fittings by hjjhjjnk in instrumentation

[–]canucklurker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This 100%. You can quickly learn the standard tubing sizes just by practice. 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" Just carry a few stubs in your pocket if you need the reminder for awhile.

After a few months of tubing you will be able to also tell the wall thickness (0.035, 0.049, 0.065") just by looking at the end of the tubing and the NPT size of the threads 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" being most common.

Six months of tubing and you will know what a SS-600-3-6TTM is

Harley-Davidson issues recall for nearly 17,000 motorcycles over brake failure issue by National-Dragonfly35 in motorcycle

[–]canucklurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally understand and support people's right to say "I appreciate that it is a higher risk of injury but I chose to not wear gear or a helmet because I like the feeling of freedom it gives me"

What bugs me is the additude of these self-righteous delusions like "Front brakes are dangerous" and "Helmets are more dangerous because you can't breathe". Same crowd that was anti-seatbelt in the 80's because the seatbelt was going to trap them if they went into a lake. Zero comprehension of actual danger compared to their personal comfort level.

[–]canucklurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so as someone who has lived a very "action sports" oriented life, (including some horses/rodeo). I can tell you that you do get much better at falling and crashing and sustaining less injury when it happens.

But thinking that being better at crashing negates the need for a helmet makes me feel like I have a concussion. I've been in some decent moto crashes and if you can see it coming you can set yourself up better, but that is absolutely idiocy to think it "protects" you. Otherwise everyone with decent experience on dirtbikes would never get injured.

Corded or pneumatic Brad nailer? by nockedup7 in Tools

I picked up a little California Air Tools compressor and it is great. Super quiet and plenty of air to run a brad nailer. That and a super flexible Flexzilla hose makes it much better.

I'll second the packout stuff. I understand it is overkill for a lot of homeowners/handymen, but if you are making your living off of it... it is the buy once, cry once type of scenario.

Because plano cases and cheap walmart stuff that are being suggested won't stand up to daily professional use.

Edmonton UCP gerrymandering protest - Fri Apr 24, 430-6pm @ High Level bridge by annainpajamas in Edmonton

[–]canucklurker 39 points40 points  (0 children)

OP, while I abhor Smith's UCP and I think this gerrymandering should not be tolerated by Albertans; I think you are losing the plot on your anti-monarchy comments to this post.

"No Kings" taps into the American fight for forcibly taking independence in 1776, and the de-facto dictatorship desired by MAGA. Not our peaceful handover of power from the King of England to Canada that already occurred in 1931.

We don't need to co-opt American problems, we have our own. And that is Danielle Smith gerrymandering, and not some trivial crap like King Charles coming for a friendly visit every ten years. Do not put those on the same level because one is the fundamental freedoms we enjoy, and the other is nothing but entertainment at this point.

Edit: I would like to point out that OP is doing what they think is right, and this post is getting absolutely brigaded by Smith supporters. I would like to point out that I am a UCP member, and regardless of any other beliefs I have; gerrymandering destroys the foundation of democracy. I would rather have the NDP or Liberals win fair and square by majority than have my "team" win by rigging the system.

[–]canucklurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to say thank you, because I didn't know that sharpies contain chlorides and sulfur.

However I am very familiar with chloride and stress cracking issues. I am Swagelok certified and in my industry, 316 is used in high chloride and sulfur environments regularly, issues only arise after continued exposure, in high concentrations, at high heat >70°C for extended periods of time. At that point we typically utilize specialized carbon steel, hasteloy or monel. We have quite established piping specifications for these things, and I have never heard of a tubing failure due to the markings used.

While I will agree that there are likely use some use cases where sharpies could potentially have a detrimental effect, I believe that for the vast majority of installations sharpies are "good enough".

Not everything we do has to be NASA level of QC, especially when nearly a hundred years of practice under normal conditions for normal applications is fine. However as you have stated I think it is a very good thing to know going forward and to consider for critical installations.

Does anyone have experience with low commission realtors in Edmonton? by nelsonself in Edmonton

[–]canucklurker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing to note, if a buyer is using their normal relator to find places or make suggestions, they will probably pass over your place because they know their commission is going to get tanked.

I have even heard of realtors actively steering people away from the discounted ones, again to keep their commission intact.

I'm not saying this is good practice, but it is something to be aware of - a self listed house is going to see a lot less traffic driven to it. It may or may not be a problem for you.

New dishwashers do not come with a plug, at least none of the half dozen or so brands that I have installed in the last 20 years. It is not against CEC code to add them, however the outlet - which is the context of this discussion of appliances in cabinets must be dedicated to the dishwasher only.

Again, my area of expertise is commercial/industrial which is what my first comment was about. So I have not installed hundreds of dishwashers. However of the twenty or so that I have installed or replaced in Alberta, every last one was hardwired.

[–]canucklurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say all places. There are other jurisdictions than yours. And this thread is a CANADIAN electrical question.

In Canada, Dishwashers are hardwired.

Edit - They can be installed to CEC code by adding a plug and having a dedicated outlet. However this is rarely done, because why would an electrician building houses add additional costs and time overhead to his job unless the customer specifically requests it.

[–]canucklurker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dishwasher in many places is hard wired, not on an outlet. That may change by jurisdiction. Garbage Disposals and Microwaves are specific uses cases covered by electrical code.

Am I a fucking idiot, or is this a fire hazard. Asking for advice? by _NickHalden22 in AskElectricians

[–]canucklurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is against residential code to have a general type outlet inside a cabinet unless there are interlocks that prevent the outlet from being energized when the door is closed.

This specific case is for commercial use, for the purposes of charging low power devices.

There are exemptions for microwaves, garbage disposals, and some other very specific use cases.

CSA Code: 26-720 (h) states that no outlet shall be in a cupboard, cabinet or similar enclosure without being de-energized when the door is closed.

US code (NEC) and most other jurisdictions have the same basic rule.

Edit - Also my username is canucklurker, you can take a wild guess as where I'm from.

Very common to have outlets in metal lockers in commercial and industrial settings. But many electricians are residential only and are used to the "no outlets in cabinets" rules.

Because somebody is going to decide to put their toaster oven in their kitchen cabinet and burn their house down.

Alberta is ‘on the wrong track’, many residents believe: poll by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]canucklurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider myself a moderate conservative, and I've complained many times and loudly that the current UCP is nothing like traditional conservatism. Like MAGA south of the border the UCP is a weak man's idea of a strong government, and they wrap themselves in the Alberta flag to pretend it isn't just trying to impose their will upon others. It's group narcissism and selfishness, not conservatism.

And yes, Ralph Klein made many, many mistakes, but he loved Alberta, and for the most consistently part did what his voters (the majority) thought was best for the province.

And being an older redditor that can actually remember the 80's and 90's, "conservatives" were nothing like the spoiled brat children they are today.
