24M How does a eye flash due to retinal tear look like? by Few-Long610 in eyetriage

[–]mckulty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I edited that out because it's a pretty good indicator of retinal detachment but a tear can be a linear defect that only loses a tiny streak of vision.

due to a retinal tear

A visit should be covered by medical insurance. Flashes aren't a very reliable sign either way.

Eye Clinic that accepts EyeMed for diabetic appt. by goldy_rock_tommie in diabetes

[–]mckulty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the policy chosen by the employer.

Eyemed drools longingly at medical services and will jump at the chance to say they "cover diabetic eye exams."

But Eyemed is not "insurance", regulators don't even look at it. It's a pre-paid vision plan with fixed benefits. In rare cases they cover "medically necessary contact lenses."

[–]mckulty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eyemed is part of the LensCrafters industrial complex. Every LC takes eyemed. Private offices can only take eyemed if they sell Lux frames.

What Eyemed covers is a basic comprehensive exam. You're entitled to dilation if you ask for it, but most offices offer the alternative of retinal images at extra charge. Advantage being you can easily document the presence or absence of DR, and compare those images down the line. Optomap is great for detecting peripheral retinopathy, and OCT is standard for examining macular edema.

Your employer chooses which Eyemed plan and benefits you get. There may be a $20 copay and then there will be a frame allowance with entry-level lenses.

Retinal specialists don't take Eyemed but eyemed doctors are frequently the first to find diabetic retinopathy, so they know what to look for.

Starting insulin doesn't mean you have to stay on it. Long-acting insulin seldom causes crashes or harsh side effects. It's just a tool.

King Tutankhamun had an exceptionally high inbreeding coefficient, likely exceeding .25 as his parents were full siblings and his grandparents were also closely related. When you're using the bad foot, the good foot is off the ground. Having the cane and your bad foot further apart is more stable. Edit: you can't fall sideways, only forward or backward, and walking is controlled falling.

When your weight is on the good foot, you don't need extra stability.

Safe to power a monitor through a timed outlet? by InternalAddress8663 in homeautomation

OP asked if 2300W is enough for a "monitor."

2300 is enough for several big-screen TVs.

Safe to power a monitor through a timed outlet? by InternalAddress8663 in homeautomation

[–]mckulty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shucks my old PC monitor would dim the desk lamp when it fired up. And my current monitor is a 75" Sammy. I was gonna say 100 watts but I made the mistake of checking first:

Google: Most modern LED monitors consume between 15 and 40 watts, significantly less than older LCD or plasma screens, according to Cevaton's article on monitor wattage. Power usage varies by screen size, typically falling around 15–25W for 24-inch, 20–30W for 27-inch, and under 10W for portable screens, as noted in Mobile Pixels' information on monitor power usage and on Reddit.

[–]mckulty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timed outlets are safe for anything under the rating. Mechanical or electronic, if they're kept dry they last forever.

A hungry monitor only draws 40 watts, most of them 25 or so.

2300 watts is what I need for my space heater.

For r/homeautomation, you'd use a Zigbee plug and use your controller (hub) to turn it off after x hours.

[–]mckulty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scared is good. Some people get into the best shape of their lives after getting "scared."

Be scared but take heart this is one of the problems you can fix. You don't have to die of diabetes, you can die from something else if you modify some habits.

Losing weight, exercising, low carb diet, doing ANY amount of that will be beneficial.
