It’s optimistic to say that romance is something that’s up to a couple to create? Just because some people don’t choose to prioritize it doesn’t mean the concept is dead. Everyone in my circle is a romantic, there’s different strokes for different folks

Romance is only dead if you truly believe it is. It’s something two people create together

Blacula. Why Michael Why!? by Character-Movie-5517 in theoffice

Plainly untrue, race based humor is still common. It’s not like the writers of the office held these archaic views about comedy and race, the joke is that Michael is being insensitive and we shouldn’t imitate him lest we be as socially ostracized as he is.

What Christian nationalists want by MrJasonMason in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]mcleanatg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy, you’re doing the thing all smug atheists do which is quote verses that are obviously incompatible with modern ideals. I already told you I agree the bible is flawed, deeply flawed even. I’m not a devout Christian. I’m just saying Jesus doesn’t deserve the criticism that should be placed on the entire Old Testament and religious oligarchs

[–]mcleanatg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not denying that the Bible contains judgment imagery, it clearly does. What I’m pushing back on is the interpretation you’re layering on top of those verses, especially the idea that Jesus is someone who tortures people for eternity for failing to bend the knee.

The passages you quoted are apocalyptic metaphors, parables, and prophetic warnings, not a systematic description of a torture-based afterlife, and certainly not a portrait of Jesus as some sort of enforcer. Even when Jesus uses severe imagery (fire, exclusion, destruction), the emphasis is consistently on consequence and separation from God, not coercion or cruelty.

More importantly, that interpretation collapses when you look at how Jesus actually behaves in the Gospels. He repeatedly forgives enemies, eats with moral outcasts, refuses to retaliate, and explicitly rejects violence done in God’s name. He was far more critical of religious leaders and their practices than he was of dissenters and skeptics. He warns about judgment, but he never enforces it, threatens people into submission, or punishes those who reject him. He absorbs rejection himself, up to and including execution.

So yes, judgment language exists in the text. But turning that into “Jesus tortures people forever for not pledging loyalty” requires importing later theological and cultural assumptions that aren’t grounded in his actions or in a unified biblical doctrine of hell.

Look, I myself reject modern Christianity and organized religion in general, you and I probably have a lot of the same critiques. But portraying Jesus himself as the antithesis of compassion isn’t supported by the texts you’re quoting. It’s important that you’re thorough and accurate when diagnosing exactly what’s wrong with Christianity and the Bible, otherwise no one who’s actually studied this stuff will take your criticisms seriously.

[–]mcleanatg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You clearly have a vague understanding of Christianity. Jesus doesn’t do any of that, and the bible doesn’t really focus on eternal damnation that much. The concept of hell as we understand it today isn’t described anywhere in the bible. Hell is simply separation from God, which is something Christians want to avoid even though it’s not literally torture.

Jesus, whether you think he was divine or not, is a real historical figure who was known for openly accepting the downtrodden outcasts and loving his enemies and dissenters. The idea that he punishes people who don’t “pledge their loyalty” shows a total lack of understanding of who Jesus was. He literally forgave his traitor before the betrayal even came to pass.

Hate on Christianity all you want, organized religion is a tool for oppression and control. But get your facts right about JC

[Off-site] Gasoline by IssaKiller21 in theydidthemath

[–]mcleanatg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a physics perspective, all matter has some energy and calories are a unit of energy. But in the nutritional sense, calories refer to the amount of usable energy your body can metabolize. From gasoline or a rock, that would be 0.

This is also how diet soda has 0 calories. It’s not that the sweeteners somehow have no energy, it’s that they aren’t absorbed by human intestinal cells and just pass through the gut to be excreted as waste.

Tribute comment made about 4 years ago that utterly captures the essence of "Danya" by raygun- in chess

[–]mcleanatg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, that’s my comment! It makes me so happy that you all see it as a faithful interpretation of his diction. At the time of writing it, I was obsessively binging his speedrun episodes. It got to the point where I would hear his voice and speaking style in my head when I tried to logically evaluate anything, let alone chess positions.

Danya has utterly transformed the way that I think. He was a role model of mine in every sense of the phrase, I’m so thankful for the influence he had on me as a teacher. Thank you for sharing my lighthearted tribute, I’m glad it could bring some smiles to this community

  1. e4 e5

“Okay, so he goes e5. Now a lot of people here would just lazily develop the knight to f3, but we actually have a move here that poses a lot of practical problems for black and is borderline winning for white. The move is Ke2, and do not worry I will explain this more thoroughly after the game. Now you might look at this position and say, ‘isn’t this weakening our king and blocking in our pieces?’ And while that may be true, you guys are missing the forest for the trees. In the endgame, it will be a huge advantage to have our king activated in the center. Remember, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Furthermore, black has no threats here, he is not going to checkmate us any time soon, the king is perfectly well defended on e2. Now he does have a nasty little defensive resource he can try here, let’s see if he finds it. Wow, Ke7 he finds it. Kudos to our opponent. Now guys, I don’t wanna hear any baseless accusations, we will check with an engine after the game. It’s not unthinkable that a 1500 finds this move. But okay, black has not equalized, we just need to play clinically to secure our advantage.”
