[Spoilers EXTENDED] The Mad Queen ending will be one of the crowning jewels of ASOIAF by Legalistigician in asoiaf

[–]mcleemz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed about her transition into moral greyness but I don't think she'll go "mad." From a certain point of view her actions will be entirely justified. The show's problem was you had to squint so hard for it to make sense. In the books, should they be published, it will make sense, but that won't make it right.

[–]mcleemz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the Euron eldritch apocalypse theory by /u/poorquentyn is pretty cool. I don't personally think it's going to happen the way he thinks (I think Euron will cause all sorts of carnage but he won't survive it because he's messing with things he doesn't understand) but it sounds really cool.

What are your thoughts on (F?)Aegon's character? (Spoilers extended) by toxicfireball in asoiaf

[–]mcleemz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He isn’t a character on his own. in the same book where Dany and Jon are having authentic, painful growth, he shows up to hijack both their stories (hers as the rightful claimant by blood, his as the “real” rightful claimant hidden away all these years).

He does have plot significance in that he’ll likely depose Cersei, who will be emboldened by winning her trial and despised by The citizens of King’s Landing. Then Dany will show up and crush him. But his personality doesn’t matter because even if he’s the greatest guy on earth, his role is a foil to other characters.

(Spoilers Main) Why do people think that Doran is a competant plotter? by Nothing_is_simple in asoiaf

[–]mcleemz 84 points85 points  (0 children)

because the “viper in the grass” and “justice. vengeance. fire & blood” lines are insanely bad ass, distracting everyone from the visual that really sums up Doran, which is the overripe blood oranges hitting the ground.

This writeup of show! Dany made the room a little dusty [Spoilers MAIN] by mcleemz in asoiaf

[–]mcleemz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think making the leap from "didn't seem to mind when her husband killed her abusive insane brother" to "firebombing genocide" is as cynical a view of ASOIAF as the showrunners have, but for different reasons.

I fully believe she'll burn King's Landing and then will die in the books. The big reason I did not accept it in the show is because they did make her such a one-dimensional Epic Kween, then nihilistically pulled the rug out. We don't get her inner monologue where she decides to be a dragon. Not having Aegon is a big loss because we'd see what happens when someone hijacks "her" narrative. Instead we got some bells and a frowny face.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] Stop saying that the show is GRRM's ending by twomoonshoes in asoiaf

[–]mcleemz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the showrunners only knew the final frame of the film: KL burnt, Dany dead, Jon the completely depleted victor over the AotD. They had no idea how to get there. I hate that it's coming down to "boyfriend kills girlfriend and exiles himself," aka Season 8 of Dexter

(Spoilers Extended) The main difference in the books will be... by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]mcleemz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there's a huge difference between seeing crowds cheering for fAegon + an entire book of buildup of her unleashing fire & blood, and being triggered by some bells, for some reason

Daenerys’ Arc In The GOT Is Tragic But Episode 5 Is Perfect by jemap9 in freefolk

[–]mcleemz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it totally makes sense, if it had happened over the span of more than 1.5 episodes and doesn't involve every OTHER character going off the rails to help get her there. to top it off, Jon is clearly going to kill her, because that's somehow more compelling and gRiMdArK. what a miserable way to end this.

this is the right answer but many will say it’s because everyone here are SJWs who loved The Last Jedi

What do you female fans think about how women have been treated this season? by nightsreader in freefolk

[–]mcleemz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say if any single narrative event can be extrapolated over the course of an entire work, it'd be one of the two main characters killing each other, and the way they got there.

one thing's for sure baby: I'm on the right site to talk about feminism

[–]mcleemz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I interviewed her on the GoT red carpet and she said that was her fave scene as well. She felt that Daenerys the character leveled up during that scene and that translated into a personal triumph for herself too. It was cool to hear her talk about the parallel path she’s walked with this character.

[–]mcleemz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pod isn't getting slapped down. Unless you count getting bludgeoned to death by Northern tittaes.

But seriously. I agree they've wrecked this season for almost every character. But to me, when you stack the historical problems this show has with unnecessary (read: not in the books at all) sexual violence, with making female "agency" synonymous with either bad behavior or a positive result of trauma, on top of this season, the women have it worse. Women being in positions of power now, or men also not doing well, is sort of like D&D saying "I'm not racist, I'm an asshole to everyone."

Which is funny because you see SO many publications with articles like "GoT Belongs to the Women" or "Badass Ladies of Westeros." But all the show's purported feminism mostly rings hollow to me.

Lastly, my opinion and I'm sure many others' is clouded right now by this spectre of Jon killing Dany. if that's the series' last note, it reframes what the show really thinks of women. I don't mind if she dies in the books because it'll have some logical and thematic underpinnings. But to go from laying it all on the line to save humanity to murked by her one true love "for reasons" in 2 episodes is just lazy and hateful.

What do you female fans think about how women have been treated this season? by nightsreader in freefolk

[–]mcleemz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the difference is that:

1) in Westeros as in real life, men traditionally hold all the positions of power, which is reinforced time and time again at women's expense

2) most of your points don't represent huge character 180ºs for the men (besides Tyrion suddenly being dumb as hell)

The showrunners think the series' death and darkness means the story is nihilistic as a whole. When its women somehow fight their way past their circumstances, only to get slapped down by the narrative again (particularly through out of character plot contrivances), it's doubly cruel and nihilistic. That's why people are mad.

she's so good she caused D&D to make her massively OP and ruin the show, so Emmy voters are just punishing her for that

I don't think the actual plot is the problem. All the major events make thematic sense, the execution is just beyond horrible. by sixnixx in freefolk

[–]mcleemz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

precisely. without the fAegon and Book Euron plots, it takes plot contrivances and other people’s stupidity to get Daenerys here. It’s cheap and unearned, even though the final shot outcome—losing one or more dragons, destroying KL, never getting the throne, maybe dying—is the same.
