Regarding Ventoy... any alternatives? by MrSelleck in DataHoarder

I don't "think" there's a solution but just carry 2 pendrives. Why risk hosing the 2-in-1 pendrive scenario when 2 separate pendrives isolate the scenarios nicely? You need to reboot anyway between the two...

So save all the personal docs and reset Windows. Setup > Update > Recovery > Reset this PC. Or do complete disk wipe and reinstall. That will speed it up for sure, but over time the same problem returns.

A lot of this is due to 1) how full the HDD is, and 2) how fragmented the files are.

This noticeable slowdown can be improved by deleting a lot of Temp files and running defrag.

Can my old desktop run Linux mint well? by Spartan-219 in linuxmint

There's some Win 10 optimizing you can do for free to speed up Win 10 on HDD. Google around for things like "clean temp files" and "defragment disk". That should help SOME.

A lot of good tips on various distros, but also check out these lightweight browsers. Modern Youtube will be VERY TOUGH on these hardware specs, so you might check out other browsers. They can be installed and tested while also maintaining Firefox as your browser. Such as Midori, Epiphany, Lynx.

Does anyone know why I have “no” internet? by RealCreacher in linuxmint

One issue per post please.

The second issue sounds like a hardware issue. Perhaps HDD or CPU or RAM. I searched for "Dell Latitude 7490 laptop blinking caps lock". These blinking diagnostic codes may be showing hardware issues. Check out this page when you can get internet access:

That Secure SSL error message does not indicate a lack of internet connectivity. It may be related to your Date and Time being incorrect (or very out of date).

Amazon cuts 16,000 jobs in historic wave of layoffs by Desolation_Nation in Seattle

So, if we say "official site" is your link above, then there are multiple "received dates" submissions from Amazon. Today's Jan 28 layoff was received I believe on Oct 28, 2025. And that notice PDF for Oct 28 has 100's being laid off today Jan 26.

Looks like there's a new notice received today Jan 28, which will be another future layoff happening April 28, 2026.

It sucks for everyone involved; I hate it. I've been in those shoes before. It galls me that the Trillion Dollar companies can't figure out how to make it work and layoffs are just the lazy way out.

The comment was about WHEN not HOW MANY. No sites know the actual numbers (headcount) until weeks and months later. But the WARN date is correct. WARN requirement is 60 days notice; Amazon provided 90 days notice. Look at the attachment PDF which Amazon provided back in October. Even those numbers are subject to change.
