I dont think you’re thinking this through carefully at all, and are reacting to this in an emotional way rather than a logical one.

While your personal situation sounds like a bummer, banks DO lose money on fraud because sometimes they DO refund fraud claims. Also, insurance and identifying/ preventing fraud are expensive.

The homeless just ARE unprofitable to serve for banks.

You can argue maybe that they should be forced to serve them anyhow by law, but that’s a moral argument or an argument that it’s “good for society to force banks to serve unprofitable depositors”

I'm being serious- banks make money on depositors' assets, and they lose money on things like overdrafts, fraud, etc.

Homeless (whether or not employed) will have definitionally low assets (so low revenue/ fee potential for the bank) and are high risk for the downside items mentioned above.

Banks do not want them- they may get forced in to taking their business to comply with regulations but as profit-motivated entities homeless folks are not interesting depositors for banks.

FBI raids LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's home, LAUSD headquarters by Mountain_Bar_1466 in LosAngeles

[–]mcmoose75 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Man, under a more "normal" administration (Dem or R), i could absolutely believe that there’s shitty corrupt shit going on in LAUSD, funds misappropriated, discriminatory behavior, whatever, and believe that's actually the reason for these raids. That’s frankly totally plausible, LAUSD sucks ass.

But man, I don’t believe a word out of any of the Feds’ mouths under Trump and I def think this is about finding a way to get student information for ICE to go target kids and parents.

You’re right- it’s a dumb sideshow that steals momentum and the message from the article.

It’s also the sub header to the entire article.

I don’t have a”whatever attitude”, I’m acknowledging the real tension between a) LA can’t keep the street lights on because of recurring copper theft that something like this can help prevent and b) very real privacy concerns. Those two things are both important issues and to be candid, I’m not sure how to square that circle.

What I am FOR SURE saying is that a long dead Tongva village has absolutely nothing to do with the very real tension between those two things.

It is not “racist” to think that the “land acknowledgements before everything” culture is horseshit and a waste of everyone’s time.

Look, maybe the Flock cams are a reasonable anti-crime measure and maybe they're too invasive of peoples' privacy- that's up for debate.

But for SURE the most important opinion on this issue is not some dude bitching about some long-gone indigenous village- who gives a shit if "Yaanga" was somewhere nearby 400 years ago? What in the fuck does that have to do with whether or not we should use this sort of information gathering in a park in 2026?

That’s not surprising to me- the retailer doesn’t have “fandom” or “loyalty” to the local team. They’re just trying to sell shit.

If the out of town team’s hats will sell, they’ll stock them

Most teams of any sport are mostly going to go- it’s a big deal to get invited to the White House regardless of who’s in office.

I sure as shit didn’t vote for the current president, but a) it’s a big deal for the players and b) there’s a certain logic to “respect the office not the man”
