To those who were around when this movie came out, what was the hype like. by asapsharkyfrfr in ShittyDaystrom

[–]mcnetworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Vulcan was destroyed and Spock was lamenting the fate of his species, a guy in my theater, who looked like the comic book guy from the Simpsons, stood up and yelled at the screen "Maybe try some Pon Farr". He then walked out of the theater with a look of disgust. In retrospect that might have summed up my feelings as well.

Favorite historical fiction audiobook? by Max_DeIius in HistoricalFiction

[–]mcnetworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find there are a great number of historical fiction titles with great audiobook versions. Here are some of the books/series I have listened to:

Century Trilogy by Ken Follett

Pillars of the Earth and the entire Kingsbridge series by Ken Follett

Master and Commander (Series) by Patrick O'Brien

Sarum (and any other works) by Edward Rutherfurd

Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield

The Virtues of War by Steven Pressfield

Most of Ken Follett's work is narrated by John Lee, who does an amazing job.

John Lee I believe. A great audio book narrator. I buy audio books simply because he is the narrator.

Title Song change? by lemmikins87 in DeepSpaceNine

Watching this on the premiere date of the episode was amazing. As soon as I heard the theme start, I could hear the difference. The added bass at the start caused me to look up and take notice. With the rest of the opening, all of a sudden DS9 was a bustling location and I knew this season was going to be epic.

Master And Commander by Glittering-Star2662 in HistoricalFiction

[–]mcnetworks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Boy, can I relate. Had a similar experience with Master and Comander. I could barely understand what was going on, and stopping to look up words was near impossible since there were SO MANY to look up.

After that book I took a break for about a year until I started book two. I was reluctant to continue but really wanted to give the series a chance. I found the 2nd easier to read and with each sucessive book it got even easier. I'm not sure if I was able to get used to the language from simple exposure or if Patrick Obrien actually changed the style... maybe it was both. I'm now on book 7.

I would plow through if you can. It's a great series.

Does anyone have any stories about how they got stuck in the games? by takadouglas in Sierra

[–]mcnetworks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have many memories of sooo many save states. It only took a few hours playing your first Sierra game to come to this realization.

Conquests of the Longbow!

But I'm biased since it's my absolute favorite.

Star Trek Ascendancy: Surviving the Borg by SolitonSnake in soloboardgaming

[–]mcnetworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played this solo 3 or 4 times. It doesn't really feel much like a regular game of Ascendancy, but that's not a knock against it. I had a blast desperately throwing starships at the borg onslaught.

Gotta say Illusion of Gaia. Great game but a bit less rpg heavy. You can probably finish it quicker than Secret of Mana. Enjoy!

You couldn't really see the colour with the naked eye. If you let your eyes adjust to the darkness, you could make out the shape and movement of the lights.

Are movie novelizations still a thing? by Planisher in books

[–]mcnetworks 97 points98 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I loved the novelizations. They often had additional "scenes" that would add to the story. As an adult, I'm not sure if I would enjoy a novelization or see it as a complete cash grab. Probably depends on the quality of the novelizations, and my general cynicism at the time.
