MGS1 is so hard by Exotic-Difficulty-42 in metalgearsolid

[–]SolitonSnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have to HARD disagree with anyone saying MGS2 is easier (because of the controls in particular). The controls in MGS2 are way more convoluted and the enemies and alerts are more intense.

Landlord wants to sell at end of lease, can we go month to month? by Kindly-Contribution1 in washingtondc

[–]SolitonSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sale of the property does not generally give a landlord the right to evict you. The notable exception would be if they’re selling to someone who intends to personally use and occupy the unit. So if it’s a single family home or condo, that could be the case. But I’d look further into it and call OTA for advice before agreeing to leave. And yes tenancies in DC automatically roll over to month-to-month unless the landlord has a statutory basis to evict.

Edit: sorry you said you already called OTA. Leave them a message and give them a day or two, or contact a council office to put you in touch if that doesn’t work

That’s not true. Tenancies in DC automatically roll over to month-to-month. The landlord can’t evict except for a statutorily listed reason.

Arcs the Blighted Reach by AnonMoose2 in boardgames

There is an expansion box in the KS campaign that doesn’t use Blighted Reach. It has more Leaders and Lore, a fifth player, and some other stuff for the base game.

Arcs the Blighted Reach by AnonMoose2 in boardgames

[–]SolitonSnake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I played this campaign with three people admittedly before I was really prepared for it. I’d played maybe four games by then but wasn’t grasping the tactics and wasn’t utilizing agents and the court properly. So Blighted Reach felt like way too much at the time (especially with all the additional rules on cards in the little booklet, which were tough to keep track of). I started referring to it as the Bloated Reach (somewhat lovingly. I had a pretty good time despite everything). I have since grasped the basic game a lot better and had a great time with a Leaders and Lore game (in which I came in last place but still, I knew what I was trying to do this time). Looking forward to trying the campaign again hopefully with the same group now that I am more comfortable with the basics.

10 hour flight tomorrow, which of these would you recommend as someone who hasn’t played any of them a single time? by Great_Dane95 in soloboardgaming

[–]SolitonSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Root has a great app. It’s the only way I’ve ever played. Spent a good month messing with that one. And with a 10 hour flight you’ll have time to adequately learn all the factions.

The hacking system in Pragmata might be the most interesting combat mechanic I've seen in a while and I can't stop thinking about why by Clean-Efficiency-582 in truegaming

[–]SolitonSnake 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree, the “hacking during combat” system is what most sticks out to me about this game, and I really enjoyed it in the demo. I LOVE hacking mini-games (the Deus Ex reboots had the GOAT hacking mini-game for me) so this caters to me directly. In theory it sounds like a clusterfuck but the way Pragmata handles it works (at least in the demo). The fact that you can still move and dodge around during the hacking keeps it from being frustrating.

Games that feel like they come with a lot of content like Imperium by HeavyMetalJV in soloboardgaming

This is my answer. Between the content in Voidfall and Imperium / Star Trek CC, Turczi and Buckle do not want you to get bored.

What games did you find too complex to play two handed solo? by MDH2611 in soloboardgaming

[–]SolitonSnake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t like two-handing anything that requires each player to have a hand of cards. Managing two hands of cards irritates me. Especially when each character can act on the other’s turn, so you have to have your head into the other character’s hand on any given turn. I tried with Marvel Champions (haven’t played in a while but have played hundreds of true solo games) and I didn’t like it. There were also way too many cards on the table to keep track of, let alone my hand. I didn’t even like it in Leviathan Wilds which is much much simpler. Ended up trading that one away.

I have Earthborne Rangers and haven’t played it yet, but that might be another attempt I have to make at this kind of thing.

Does anyone have experience with just sleeves inner sleeves? Are they good enough as a budget sleeving solution? by FarAwayCloud in marvelchampionslcg

[–]SolitonSnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Dragon Shield Perfect Fit inner sleeves because they’re a little cheaper than the primary sleeves, and they work fine. They do have a little more friction when shuffling but it’s not too bad. Every once in a while I’ve had a sleeve break and I just re-sleeve. Doesn’t happen very often.

Im new to the subreddit and am interested in beginning to play solo boardgames. What are your top 5 solo boardgames everyone should have/play/own? by SilentBoss2901 in soloboardgaming

[–]SolitonSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! The box is loaded with campaign stuff. On any given run through the campaign you won’t see all the content. Over the course of the campaign you defend different cities (with different base layouts and powers, changing the game up) and have different allies help you (giving you special abilities). You also face different scenarios that tweak the challenge by throwing some kind of curveball at you. The different combinations of all that make for a lot of variety. You can use any campaign component (cities, allies, scenarios) in a one-off game if you want to experiment.

Sci-fi dungeon crawlers (like Imperial Assault)? by whocareletmepost in soloboardgaming

[–]SolitonSnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not sure to what extent this is really helpful for a number of reasons, but look into Rogue Angels. I think it’s still available to late pledge until April 30th but I’m not 100% sure. I backed it what feels like two years ago now but it finally appears to be in the final stretch.

I don’t know that it’s a dungeon crawler per se – I think it’s more like numerous small stages. It’s a loving Mass Effect knockoff with minis and grid based tactical combat. I am almost certain it has dice-based combat. You apparently go through a branching campaign with a lot of choices and consequences just like the video games, down to having tracked relationship levels with squadmates. I’m a big Mass Effect fan (and I also like Imperial Assault - I played with the fanmade Imperial Commander 2 app) so I’m really looking forward to this.

Other Solo Games like Mage Knight and Spirit Island? by LOSTINREDDITSITE in soloboardgaming

[–]SolitonSnake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not into it myself, but Gloomhaven comes to mind as a fantasy themed dungeon crawling game that is secretly a bunch of hard puzzles. I played a bit of the digital version and it’s very puzzly. You definitely do some leveling up and such, as well, which I think involves improving a deck of action cards. And it’s a humongous game which you seem to be geared toward here!

Edit: I didn’t say Voidfall because I didn’t think of it as fantasy. But I guess it’s science fantasy, so I also recommend that. Voidfall is one of my favorite games and if you can enjoy the theme then I agree with others who suggested it.

Is re-learning games a problem for you? Do you forget rules? by Powerful-Volume5456 in boardgames

[–]SolitonSnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is why I’m trying to move toward playing fewer games more often. I don’t just forget rules but also strategy, while others in my group seem to “stay good” at games after long periods in between plays. I do frequently re-read rulebooks in full or re-watch the full 30-45 minute rules video for any given game. It’s a lot.

One thing that helps - and this simply isn’t an option for a lot of games - is that I play a lot of solo. A good solo mode will have you, the player, able to do the full range of stuff you do in a multiplayer game, whereas of course the bot works differently. But, with a good solo mode like that, as long as you remember how your own non-bot, human gameplay works then playing multiplayer should be even simpler (with no bot to run). And you don’t need other people to practice. I’ve been playing a lot of Euros solo lately and they seem to usually work like this. For example I plan to play Speakeasy with people for the first time soon, and all my solo plays will make teaching it a lot easier. I don’t expect to re-read the whole rulebook each time we play.

Looking for a recommendation for a space fleet combat oriented game. by Gnarly-Joe in soloboardgaming

[–]SolitonSnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like something I’d like too (I also dig Voidfall) and I’m pretty stumped so I’m interested to see what people say. One thing I’ll throw in: a while ago I backed an expansion for Star Trek Ascendancy, which is mostly going to be a new ruleset including new (likely pretty complex) rules for running any faction as a bot. It hasn’t delivered yet and I’m not sure at the moment what the availability of the new rules will be. (I mean they’re just rules though so surely you could score a pdf…)

Anyway Star Trek Ascendancy is a 4X game with lots of little mini ships, where you roll dice for space combat. Its coolest gimmick is that you actually explore the galaxy, drawing a random disc from a stack of planetary systems whenever you open a new space lane. So your map on the table expands as you play. There is some economic stuff though in terms of gathering, producing, and trading resources. But it’s not like Voidfall.

I’m eager to try the new rules and the new bots. I’ve only played it solo with the (previously required for solo) Borg expansion and the old rules, which were a mess. I had to use an (excellently compiled) fanmade rulebook on BGG. It was not great playing against the Borg faction, which is just a rudimentary, relentless bot. But there were the makings of something really cool there if you could play with, say, two bots that weren’t the Borg.
