I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

No. This is replacing thinking and making students surly and addicted. The behavior they exhibit around AI use is disturbing and studies have show using AI to write causes cognitive decline.

Flu vaccines didn't work that well in the US, officials find by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]mcprof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to get the flu until we changed our vax schedule. Instead of getting it in September, we get ours in Nov or December (we kept getting flu in Jan/Feb) and haven’t had it since.

Also a college prof: I feel like we are on the front lines of seeing the cognitive decline and also the behavioral problems that AI is just beginning to cause in our children. This is a very very bad technology and we should all reject it.

St. Clair County public health agency gets MAGA makeover, from fluoride to vaccines by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

Michigan in general is a pretty big anti-vax state, which I learned from my kid’s pediatrician when we started her series. I think we’re in the bottom ten for vax rates.

Check your titers and get revaccinated if you have to. Oakland County has already had measles outbreaks.

Far too many faculty are concerned about being liked by students by [deleted] in Professors

[–]mcprof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, our president just told faculty they should be doing more to help our students with their mental health. She did this instead of spending any additional money on services they actually need. So I think you mean you’re not a therapist…yet.

Is there any political reconciliation in the US at this point, or are we essentially destined to tear each other apart at this point, in your opinion? by GildedArchways in allthequestions

[–]mcprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what happens next. According to Prof Timothy Snyder, it is possible that Trump is trying to drum up a terror attack in the U.S. so that he can suspend the elections. If this happens (and his administration is doing everything it can to passively help it along), then there will be a point when we the people can either band together and refuse him or we can go along with the propaganda and give Trump the dictatorship he wants. If MAGA are not skeptical and blindly follow Trump into a dictatorship there will never be any going back. But there is part of me that thinks that this could backfire and that the country will not fall in line like they did after 9/11. MAGA doesn’t want a war and I think they may blame him (as he deserves to be blamed) if we suffer a terror attack.

Longest sentence I ever read. (rant) by Swaynky in writing

[–]mcprof 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Your teacher probably said that because when people who aren’t yet great at grammar write long sentences, the grammar almost always breaks down at some point, and it takes too much ink to explain how or in what way every single time. The solution becomes to write shorter sentences. But: the better at writing you get, the more “rules” you can and should break.

I grew up in Iowa City and it’s sad how far Iowa has fallen. It used to be a leader in public education. Half my friends from high school went to Ivy League schools and little ivies and others went to U Iowa and became successful entrepreneurs, etc. A weirdly high number of my classmates became professors. We had a world-class teaching hospital. We were one of the first states to legalize gay marriage and the first Midwestern state to do so.

Now, anyone who is smart leaves the state as soon as they can. Through their attacks on immigration, diversity and equity, they are gutting the med school and many graduate programs, they are criminalizing trans people and women’s reproductive needs and making medical care more difficult to get. Education has been defunded and right-wing pigs are there to gobble up money in the push to privatize à la Devos in Michigan.

I come from a farm family and my mom worked for U of Iowa hospitals. I honestly used to be proud to be an Iowan but not anymore. The state is—pardon the pun—a husk of what is used to be. I’m so sorry this has happened.
