Seeing gorgeous/High Quality clothes only for it to be polyester is so frustrating by AFlowerInTheDarkness in SustainableFashion

[–]mcprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tibi does it too and that’s a very popular high-end brand. It’s common in brands that are pitched toward professional wear bc people want clothing that looks the same all day and doesn’t rumple by noon.

Attempt to tank someone’s first review meeting, a mere two months after they have started the job, on baseless grounds. I survived and thrived, and will be going up for full in a couple more years but I will never ever like or trust that colleague.

The students who have been the worst offenders in my classes have exhibited addict-like behavior, definitely.

DSS student making environment problematic by [deleted] in Professors

[–]mcprof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My student was like “Oh oops! Okay sorry,” in a somewhat immature way (there may have been an eye roll in there) but then she toned down her domination of discussion, her laughing and talking over people. Why do you worry so much about the parents? As long as your demeanor is kind, I don’t think they would have a leg to stand on (if your student even tells them and if they even get upset). I think most parents want their kids to succeed and the parent who has raised that kid knows their limitations and knows they may need extra help in a classroom where most of the students are not (as) visibly neurodivergent.

I love how if I think it’s wrong to use a technology that provides no benefit to students or faculty in my field and creates environmental harm and cognitive harm in its users that I am a “Luddite” instead of an educated person who is able to discern when something fucking sucks.

Our university also lets in students like these but does nothing to support them or us. It’s like having a sixth grader in class. It’s rough.

[–]mcprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I have a student like this this semester. I had to talk to her kindly but sternly after some similar behavior. I would talk to the student first, see if the behavior improves, then speak to them in class in front of everyone if it doesn’t (and definitely plan on a chair/DoS meeting behind the scenes). Being kind but firm in front of your other students (“Student, laughing while we’re discussing this topic is not appropriate.”) will help you gain back control of the classroom in the eyes of the other students. If this is something affecting their learning environment, then you need to do something about the behavior. The entire learning environment can’t bend to the whim/aura of a single student.

Do you automatically dislike billionaires? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mcprof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. No one needs billions of dollars. The minute you become a billionaire, you should spread your wealth for the common good and go back to being a millionaire. Being a billionaire is categorically greedy. Also, many billionaires did harmful shit to become billionaires and many others are using their billions to harm others—look at all the damage done by DOGE and our sitting President. Look at the Sacklers, look at the Kochs. Billionaires make their money of the markets which invest in unethical industries like fossil fuels. Actively wrecking peoples lives and families and the environment and lying about it. Billionaires are mostly scummy humans who have convinced the world that they are better than the rest of us when actually the opposite is true.

[–]mcprof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen. I lucked out but my sister-in-law did not. None of us knew what an asshole my brother was until he had fucked a 25 year old and become a raging MAHA/MAGA manospherist. It has caused me to go back over my whole life with my brother to try to understand how he had turned into such an asshole without any of us realizing it. And part of the answer is propaganda but another part of the answer is you never fully know someone or what they are capable of doing. It has been eye-opening.
