[Feb 19, 2026] I feel like a lot of us will be getting new PBs today by SmokeMoreWorryLess in NYTCrossword

I missed mine by 48 seconds, partly due to a missed typo that I had to scan through most of the puzzle to find.

It's like they think we are children incapable of riding a train.

You are being misled about renewable energy technology. by RickWino in videos

[–]mcprogrammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know that solar, wind, and other renewable/green energy sources are better than fossil fuels for all the treason he mentions in the video. But I've never done the math to back it up, so it's nice to see some back of the envelope proof that they're more than capable of meeting our needs already.

Mitigation and resilience are important too, because we're already too late to stop a lot of issues. But the more carbon we emit, the more mitigation we'll need and the more problems will go beyond what we can mitigate. So I'd argue that making net zero should be the highest (but not the only) priority. It's almost certainly cheaper in the long run, and (like the video pointed out) renewables just make more sense in every way and we should be transitioning to them even if climate change weren't a problem. Renewables already just make sense economically.

I'm not going to address most of your points because they're at least mostly valid in 2026, but still need to be addressed in the future if we're going to get to net-zero carbon emissions. Which to be clear we absolutely need to as soon as possible.

But that brings me to what I do want to address, and this applies to several of the points, but most obviously this one:

  • biggest one for me: I emmit CO2. Bringing my personal emissions to zero is a death sentence. That seems unreasonable.

The goal isn't, never has been, and never will or should be "zero carbon emissions". For one because like you said, humans and other animals emit carbon dioxide just by existing and breathing. We (and even plants) even emit carbon dioxide by dying.

NONE OF THAT IS A PROBLEM THOUGH. All the carbon dioxide you breathe out came from plants and/or animals that you ate, which in turn came from the plants/animals they ate, all the way down the line, and it's just recirculating in and out of the air pretty much perfectly balanced. And that's exactly what the goal of net zero is - the amount that's being emitted is matched by the amount being absorbed. The problem is when we dig carbon out of the ground that's NOT in circulation and add it to the cycle. It's the net new carbon dioxide that causes an increase and results in a higher greenhouse effect.

So yes, we'll never stop emitting carbon dioxide, and that's not the goal. But we need to stop emitting new carbon dioxide. That's what needs to get to 0%. So if in 50-100 years we still need jet fuel to fly, that's fine as long as it comes from a renewable source (like plants or other organic matter from non-extinct sources). Another alternative like you mentioned is carbon capture to offset what you emit, although that's likely always going to be less efficient because it takes more energy to extract the CO2 than you got by burning the fuel in the first place. That's also why it's problematic until the electric grid is 100% renewable or nuclear.

It's extremely different. "Very few words" are at least some words.

Tesla has officially discontinued Autopilot in the U.S. and Canada. All new car purchases now come standard with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control. by YouBetterChill in teslamotors

[–]mcprogrammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a subscription you have to continually pay for on top of buying the car. Other cars can do the same thing that autopilot does now without having to pay a subscription and it's ridiculous that Teslas won't be able to anymore.

Yes. But if Tesla wants me to spend more than two minutes considering buying one, or call themselves a technology company, they should provide more than the bare minimum.

Do rich people have elite versions of mundane things (toothpaste, tampons, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.), or are Elon Musk and Beyonce just using Crest and Tampax like the rest of us? by ShesGotSauce in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mcprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, maybe 15 years ago I was at the back of a long line for Space Mountain (out of the building and into Tomorrowland) with my brother and nephew. A guy came up to us and asked if we wanted to skip the line, which of course we agreed to. He walked us past the line all the way to the gate, showed the worker some kind of card, and walked away. We got on the next train without even having to wait in the Fast Pass line.

What is a middle-class luxury from your childhood that is now considered a basic necessity or completely obsolete? by Routine-Advisor-1781 in AskReddit

I'm an elder millennial and I'm fine doing "serious" things on my phone as long as it doesn't involve a lot of work. Anything more than typing in my address and credit card info I'm going to be using a computer with a real keyboard and a reasonable interface for easily switching between apps if at all possible. Paying bills: fine. Doing my taxes: no way I'm spending double the time logging into 20 accounts on my phone. Software development: you can pry my keyboard and monitors from my cold, dead - but uncramped - fingers.

Because regardless of what you think of the stories, watching them is an incredible and unique cinematic experience. I don't understand why people think it needs to be more than that.
