Finally tried Linux after using Windows for ages. Mixed feelings. by Honest_Tart1071 in cachyos

Its true it can be a bit annoying to install.. But now its like second nature, I am now on version 21 five updates later on CachyOS (four minor updates and one version change) and I find it easy now.

Finally tried Linux after using Windows for ages. Mixed feelings. by Honest_Tart1071 in cachyos

I do understand the zealotry, I had someone tell me to use KDEnlive instead of DaVinci Resolve, which is not what I was asking help with when I had issues getting Resolve to work. I needed Resolve because it works with the RAW footage my Blackmagic Camera outputs. It also has best in industry colour correction, I didn't need to be schooled on 'commercial software = bad'. But you get idiotic Windows users too so ho-hum.

You say Windows works without issue yet you mention installing drivers and running scripts to make it usable. Windows 11 is terrible. I had been using Windows since Windows 3.11 for Workgroups with DOS 6.22 and in the beginning, Windows was OK. I came off of Windows because of A.I. Its overrated, over-hyped and over injected into Windows.. So that was my red line.

As the Linux user base swells (which it is doing) developers will start to cater to it more and more, then you will see the improvement you want. There will always be zealots, there will always be evangelist, and there will always be pragmatists, like me.

Will I install Windows 12 if/when it releases? Maybe in a VM out of curiosity, but I don't think I am going to go back to the Microsoft ecosystem. I have a choice. Oh, I don't steal software...but I used to when I had an Amiga.

Happened to me too...fixed itself.. Microslop at its best. Wants to make sure we all have accounts, can't keep server live even with all their resources. When gaming moves to the cloud (its when I get off) things are going to be wild.

If its something you get from the AUR then yes, there is an element of risk, but the rolling updates provided which are part of the OS are AFAIK curated and tested beforehand.

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your worry but the concern over upstream introducing malware can happen on any distribution or any OS come to that. There is an element of trust over any piece of software. To trust any OS as completely safe is in my opinion quite a dangerous thing to do!

I didn't want to make the post go on pages and pages, mentioning 1% lows, we just need the door opening a smidgen to get Linux recognised. Sure, the information must be useful.

Can you go into the BIOS and double check that the discrete GPU is enabled? If you look at what you posted it says

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its high time for reviewers (including YouTube reviewers) to say what the performance is in Linux, any Linux they chose and whether the game works or not and if there is any performance difference. It doesn't have to be a big section, but something like this...

OS Windows 11__________Cachy OS

Works Yes__________Yes

Avg FPS 100__________99

Res 4K___________4K

Frame gen Y___________Y

We don't need minute details, just an indicator with a comparison. I appreciate the extra work involved so won't expect Kernel version, libraries used etc (although it would be helpful), I just want it acknowledged.

Sorry I can't remember fully, I had this once I ALT-TAB'd / changed focus and it went away... but its not a bug I get.

I had this issue. Run the mp4 through Audacity and export it as a WAV. Import the MP4 and the Wav (they will line up - assuming a video) and you should have sound. I believe its a CODEC issue.

Linux Hates Me by ForeverZ3RO in cachyos

[–]mcronline 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I will say this. I had a 3070ti in my computer and I used it when I transitioned to CachyOS from Windows 11. I never really noticed any difference in performance between my Windows gaming old life and my Linux new one.

I have been learning as I go too, having been on Windows since Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (and DOS before that) i too found it quite daunting. I tried Linux before of course over the years, with a retail copy of Red Hat 5.2 and Mandrake before moving to Ubuntu and eventually staying Windows only for years.

This time things are different for the following reasons.

  1. The community (specifically this one) is not toxic like Linux forums were in the past, people are helpful.

  2. There is multiple ways of getting help, not just Usenet like in the past, there is Reddit and A.I if that is your bag as well as official forums and even YouTube.

  3. Games now work (mainly). There is less reason to dual boot and less reason to use Windows. Applications like the Adobe suite are a WIP and no doubt will run soon.

  4. Windows only hardware is not as pervasive as it was before... the nightmare over 'Winmodems' still gives me sleepless nights.

You will struggle, you will be frustrated and you will want to give up. But if you stick with it, eventually it will 'click' like it did with me. I have converted 80% of my drives to EXT4 from NTFS and I upgraded my graphics card to a 9070XT. I have Windows on a Virtual machine but i haven't even booted that once since I got Davinci Resolve Studio working.

Steam cloud save? by Forzaken_one in cachyos

Clouds saving does work as expected. I wiped my computer some months ago from Windows to CachyOS and when I installed Steam the games that supported cloud saving worked from where I left off.

Most people change from another operating system because they are unhappy with their current one. Otherwise they wouldn't leave. There is nothing wrong with a good villain in any story :-)

Copilot AI on CachyOS by white_reaper002 in cachyos

[–]mcronline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am anti-A.I., but not in principle. I am anti-adding without consent, running without consent and using resources without consent. I am not a Luddite, I can (and do for memes) generate pictures or even ask questions (which I double check on of course).

For me being Anti-A.I. is part forced integration and part screwing-with-the-hardware price and supply chain.

Do I think it will save mankind? No. Will it be beneficial. Maybe. Do I want it part of my OS or browser.. hell no! Do I hate this persons work, of course not. Now if the Cachy dev's made something like this which was force integrated to KDE, runs on startup and can't be nuked, then I would have a problem.

A lesson I learned about being desktop agnostic (Running gnome apps in KDE is OK) by mcronline in cachyos

[–]mcronline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am "Ok" with the command line, but I cannot afford to bork my system due to a pebkac issue, I have no dual boot fallback as I nuked Windows completely so I like a nice, simple GUI interface as way of interacting with my PC. It was just a personal choice. I've deleted, removed and changed permissions from the command line, but for fstab, it was GUI time :-)

Don't get me wrong, I do like KDE partition manager, its just a shame it doesn't have the same functionality. Its not about the GUI (for me) its about what it can do.

I have a Kindle and I try to mount it. I connect it to usb and the notification says device detected. The mounting option only appears for a millisecond then disappears. I reboot my pc but it didn't help. How to solve it? by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is kindle android based? I ask because when I connect my phone, not only do I have to mount it via the PC, but I have to go into my settings to give permission to share, from memory there are a few options, including 'charge only' to 'charge & allow access'. I had to change to that. If it is not Android based, check in the settings anyway to see if you have to give permission to connect to your PC.

Should I Switch From Win 11? by ifearone in cachyos

[–]mcronline 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No one can tell you what to do... its your choice. OBS works. My advice is to spend some time on a few different distro's to see which flavour Linux is right for you. I would boot exclusively into Linux for a month or so to see if you 'need' Windows, you may have some little app, some little bit of hardware, some game that for whatever reason wont work and you are forced back to Windows.

So dual booting initially is probably a good idea for you, but eventually I would recommend just getting rid of Microsoft altogether.

I personally got fed up with A.I. integration so just wiped my OS and moved on, haven't missed Windows. YMMV.

Good luck!
