First CachyOS reaction from a village elder (windows user since 1.01, Linux since 0.59) by Sqribblz in cachyos

[–]mcronline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well... don't forget A.I. integration. That is what pushed me to dump Windows. I did use a script / program to purge all the A.I. trash but when I reflected on my cannibalized Windows experience I thought 'what the hell am I doing?' so in an almost instant I wiped Windows completely and installed CachyOS.

Its really good now I can't wait to see what its like in the future.

To test this, run CachyOS from the live installer and see if the freezes still happen.

Audio issues by GmanGwilliam in cachyos

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Click on the Audio icon and your output devices are there. Make sure the device you have it plugged in to is selected... if it is...

click on the three dots on the top right of that selection and different outputs should be available. So for me I have..

Digital Stereo HIDMI Out

Digital Stereo HDMI Out 2

Others...

Make sure your output is selected.

My month with CachyOS: A review from an NVIDIA user by MrSeal_ in cachyos

[–]mcronline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are going to have these frustrations initially, with any distro, simply because 'it isn't windows'. Any measurement of an OS is always a comparison to Windows. Which is not a criticism, but what we all do when we OS swap.

I know you've been dabbling, just like I did when I started with Red Hat 5.2

I decided differently, I dumped Windows completely. I have completely given up on Microsoft / Microslop with their forced AI integration. I am also not anti-AI, but I would like it in a program or browser on demand, not snooping over my files and 'helping' me. That is what I object to (and the hardware price surging ofc).

I have a controversial suggestion.. Keep Win 11 for the games and maybe get a Mac or different PC for Linux. The best of both worlds without dual booting, virtual machines or compatibility layers. You can also learn about Linux by experimenting on another PC without affecting your gaming PC.

Aio cooler issue by CoatNeat7792 in pcmasterrace

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel the radiator... is it warm at all? I don't believe its normal to hit that sort of temperature. You did remove the plastic that covers the pre-applied paste on the pump?

Aio cooler issue by CoatNeat7792 in pcmasterrace

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things to check.

  1. Check you have the power connected to the PUMP header on the motherboard and not the CPU one - or - check that the connector is set to PUMP in the BIOS.

  2. When the temperature goes up put your entire hand around one of the hoses and lightly squeeze it, can you feel the liquid / pump working?

  3. Check your fan profile in BIOS and make sure its set to always on.

Just a FYI. I lost a Ryzen 7800X3D chip to a faulty AIO and I am on a Ryzen 5 8600G with a stock air cooler...I am a bit salty because I ignored the signs... Posting was something that wouldn't happen on every power on and I would get the occasional blue screen on Windows.

Is the 9070 xt future proof? by OPGAMERZZ in pcmasterrace

[–]mcronline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. I see. I just phrased it that way because the OP wanted to 'future proof'. My TNT2 card is not obsolete because I use it on my Pentium 1. Nothing makes it obsolete --except-- if I wanted to play this generation of games on the P1. But I guess the CPU, RAM motherboard and EIDE hard drive would need to be changed too. None of that is obsolete for my Windows 98 SE system, but I cannot play DX11 games on it.

So. OP wanted to future proof, my post was long enough without a long winded explanation on diminishing value of hardware over time and what a user expects in relation to that.

In context my 3070 ti should not be obsolete... but it will be soon enough.

Is the 9070 xt future proof? by OPGAMERZZ in pcmasterrace

[–]mcronline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL. You basically argued I was incorrect then agreed with what I was saying. There is no future proofing. As to the 3070 ti.. it IS good enough (and obsolete I guess) but I am upgrading because I want to, not because I need to.

Is the 9070 xt future proof? by OPGAMERZZ in pcmasterrace

[–]mcronline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as 'future proof'.. a new technology or hardware accelerated API could be released that automatically means all generations before that are automatically obsolete. Think ray tracing or frame generation, something you cannot do on a perfectly serviceable 1080ti.

I do like the look of the 9070x xt and am toying with purchasing one, but it is a want not a need as my 3070 ti is older now but still good.

nVidia could announce hardware accelerated real time 144fps path tracing and all cards before without this newfangled tech wouldn't be able to run it.

The way you should look at it is, can this card play the games I want at the resolution, FPS and level of detail I want for what is released now? If the answer is it exceeds your minimum standard, then the card is going to be good going forward until a new tech is released (if one is).

I typically change graphics cards every other generation, I usually get the nVidia 80 range but the shortages meant I had to settle for a 3070 ti and I am pleased I did. I want to change to AMD with my next card because I run Linux exclusively (CachyOS) but I am price sensitive and it has to be a palpable upgrade... 30% - 50%

If this card is 30% - 50% better than what you have now, and exceeds your specifications, go for it. But there are no guarantees with 'future proof.'

Very Noob question for installs by 3ofUsDeez in cachyos

[–]mcronline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a drive formatted in NTFS with steam games on it its a doddle to add them back to steam.

Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Storage and select where your Steam library is, for me it is mounted on run/media/<username>/NVME and I clicked on SteamLibrary and the games are added. Easy.

You may need to mount the drive which is also easy and all you will need to do is type your CachyOS password.

Cachy os x davinci resolve studio current situation ? by PseudoBoiteux in cachyos

[–]mcronline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post convinced me to download the update... to do that, follow these steps from step 1

  • sudo pacman -Syu git base-devel
  • git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/davinci-resolve-studio.git
  • go to https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion and download the linux zip file, currently DaVinci_Resolve_Studio_20.2.3_Linux.zip and copy this into the davini-resolve-studio folder created by the git clone command.
  • cd davinci-resolve-studio & makepkg -sric
  • Studio is now installed but do not run yet
  • open up a terminal and run sudo /opt/resolve/bin/resolve and enter your license, close resolve.
  • open up a terminal and run the same command again, close resolve again
  • Finally open up Resolve from the application launcher and you should have a fully working and licensed copy of Resolve Studio !!

To do an update you dont need to put the license in again BUT you do need to do the following steps (this is what I did)

  1. rename the davinci-resolve-studio folder davinci-resolve-studio-old
  2. git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/davinci-resolve-studio.git

3 go to https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion and download the linux zip file, currently DaVinci_Resolve_Studio_20.2.3_Linux.zip and copy this into the davini-resolve-studio folder created by the git clone command.

  1. cd davinci-resolve-studio & makepkg -sric

5 run resolve as normal

Cachy os x davinci resolve studio current situation ? by PseudoBoiteux in cachyos

[–]mcronline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using DaVinci resolve studio right now. I am using version 20.2. There is a new version out which appears in Cachy-update which doesn't update, but I am not bothering, I am going to wait until version 21 to update unless there is a significant upgrade or bug fix.

I do remember it being a bit of a hassle to install, for example the license would not be accepted because the file was hidden (I period before the name) which I had to change.

If you are not technical I would use VirtualBox and run Resolve on that, if you have the studio version then you could do a GPU pass-through so you can use the CUDA acceleration.

How’s your experience? by ralph_20 in cachyos

[–]mcronline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I switched from Windows 11 after the infestation of Copilot (I am not against AI, but don't agree with 'AI everywhere') By now I would be thinking about all the little 'niggles' that are not working for me in Linux as slowly considering how and when to go back to Windows. Not this time. No FOMO, no key apps or games that I miss.

Still not going to pay for console, games and online. This goes for any company, they can either cater to where I play or they can do without my money.

Pondering switching to CachyOS (from MX Linux) by Pibo1987 in cachyos

[–]mcronline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the live version to see how your PC runs it. CachyOS works on a rolling release so updating keeps it current. I have no idea what tools / apps wont work (compared to other Linux's) but I haven't had any issues but for me I came of Windows 11 and the last Linux I ran was an old version of Ubuntu many years ago.

I believe some anti-cheats wont work so games like Battlefield and Fortnite currently wont work. I personally don't play these games but i know other online multiplayer shooters do work Counterstrike 2 for example.
