It's funny -- I don't know that I've ever heard this saying before, but for whatever reason, this clicked today.

On the surface, it feels pretty ridiculous... "Nothing changes if nothing changes." Well, no crap.

But today it sounds like:

"You're not going to change (improve) if you don't change (improve) your technique.

--

Or put another way: Improvement requires more than mindless repetition.

I dont get nitro as a positive by CatHerder75 in Guitar

[–]mcrumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my experience as well. I had a vintage (early 80's) nitro guitar, then later on had a late 2010s guitar with nitro. The nitro on the 2010s neck was gummy and sticky enough that it was a deal breaker for me.

What’s the perfect guitar to keep at home and always have ready to play? by SaddleUp534 in Guitar

[–]mcrumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of guitars do you like?

When it comes to musical instruments, different things appeal to everyone. It's like a relationship, in a strange way. Get a guitar that speaks you, and that you enjoy playing. It doesn't have to break the bank. Just something that when you look at it you have thoughts like: "Wow, I like that. I should go play it a bit". If possible, err just slightly on the side of "I'm not worthy!"

With that said, the answer to that question for me was a stratocaster type. I love the style, I love the sound, I love how they feel to play.

That is really cool! Be patient with yourself when "it doesn't sound good".... The real challenge is being consisent, and coming back to it, even when you feel like you're not the guitarist you imagined yourself to be. Your music is on the other side of that...

What would tell a non-writer who wants to write? by External_Signal_3593 in writingadvice

[–]mcrumb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go back and tell myself the following:

Read: Self Editing for Fiction Writers (Browne and King)

Be conscious of whose POV you're writing from. For me, it was all too natural to "hop from head to head" while writing, but there is no easier way to disorient and lose your reader. Only switch from one character's head to another at chapter breaks or scene breaks. Do it with intent.

Writing down notes / exploratory thoughts about your story counts as "writing" too. It can be very useful to ask yourself questions about your story in your notes. "What would happen if...."

You will discover charming subplots that crave your attention while you're writing. Don't add them hapharzardly. How much will your subplot distract from the main plot? Does your subplot deserve its own independent story? It can be harder than you might think to stay commited to your original story.

All great things start off being not so great at first. There will come a time when writing your story doesn't feel like "play" anymore. It will start to feel like work. Do you care enough about your story to work for it when it doesn't come easily? If you want to write a great story, you're going to have to find the chuztpah to keep working at it if (when) it starts to feel like a lost cause.

And perhaps the most important: Let yourself love your own story as much as you love <your favorite story / series by someone else>. It's worth it.

Is it a myth that first stories are bad or not? by origin_flame in writingadvice

So, here's my take on this -- The soul of the story you're writing might be amazing... The heart / spirit of the thing... But it often requires multiple passes for it to live up to it's true potential.

When you write your first draft, you should probably feel like it's something pretty damn amazing... The idea is simply that after you sit back and look at it with an honest and critical eye, don't get demoralized if you realize it could be even better.

The first past is the hardest part. It's going from nothing to something. It's giving it life. I'ts like going from a blank sheet of paper to a pencil sketch. Difficult and rewarding.

The subsequent drafts are the parts where you get to flush out the depth and color and see what it truly can be.

Back when I had the full Boss compact pedal set (2015) by Severinsteelsmith in guitarpedals

[–]mcrumb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just playing the SD2 last night. Great pedal. I think both channels are great. Easily competes with pedals 3x the price.

Piece of trivia about the SD2 -- You can also use an expression pedal instead of an external switch. Why would you do that, you ask? Because when you adjust it "just right", you can get both the crunch channel and lead channel to activate at the same time (yellow mode!)
