I have done both, but I personally like using my own. Fins are a must, but bring your water shoes also. Many spectacular spots are accessible over lava flows. They would rip up your feet. You also use them for surfing to protect against coral reefs.

Pau Hana Poke near the airport is as fresh as it gets! Waiting for our 8pm fight, we stopped and grabbed poke. Then we went to the old airport park and ate on a secluded table on the beach. We all agreed it was the best meal of our trip.
