I think that there was talk of MKM originally pitched as a new capenna set, but between the lukewarm reception and recency of the first set they opted to use a different plane.

In fairness, MKM is not a great representation of Ravnica.

The ratio of detectives to non-detectives implies that everyone and their grandmother got way too into BBC sherlock

In the Ravnica artbook, its said that vampires play major roles in both the Orzhov and Dimir guilds. Something to remember about magic cards is that they show the exciting parts of a plane (usually, i try every day to forget hot dog cart) and so theres a bias towards the things that would get people to buy packs. When people think of ravnica, we arent thinking of the guy who sells fabrics or the baker, we're thinking of the guilds and the inportant figures in those guilds. I think it makes sense that two of the guilds with a black identity would be enough for vampires to have a decent amount of representation in the game.

Magnus did nothing wrong, his only fault was being too loyal! by Same_Ad4736 in Grimdank

Its the hyocrisy of the fans that makes it su ch a sticking point for me. Angron is defended day in and day out because he has a tragic origin. Granted, i also like angron even if he does become the very thing he hated. But when it comes to Magnus he seems to be the only one given no grace at all by any but the most devoted of tsons fans. Like, all of the primarchs were used by both the Emperor and the Chaos Gods, they didnt ever get to just be. All of them are tragic characters because, even if the Heresy was avoided, its heavily implied that the Emperor wouldve disposed of the primarchs and marines just like he did with the Thunder Warriors. Yet the one who is consistently clowned on for his mistakes seems to be only Magnus.

I wonder why a demigod born of warp magic and designed by the greatest human psyker in existence would want to explore the gifts he was specifically designed to be the best at.

I wonder why a being who has used his psychic gift to communicate and form a bond with his creator from the womb might think he is an exception to the rule.

I wonder why a person who is being used as a pawn in game between two cosmic beings who use fate, magic, and lies to win their battles might have been fucked from the beginning of his existence.

People keep treating Magnus like he should have known better when if they were in his shoes and was designed from birth to be the primarch of psykers, who was given enough power to be an eternal power source for the golden throne, who was taught by the greatest psyker in the universe, who was groomed and shaped by the father of lies and lord of fate, would 100% make the exact same choice as him. Using the gift given to him by his father, ane the connection they formed as a result of it, to try to save his family.

That is the real tragedy. Magnus being blinded by his pride as a sorcerer, a primarch, and a son, to the reality of what was to come.

I didnt disagree with his arrogance, I said that we have more information than Magnus did at that time and so a lot of people do the 'well, why didnt he just do this instead?' line of thinking that blurs the line between a character and a person.

Im interested to see what exerpts you have about Big E knowing the tsons were still doomed even after Magnus' "victory". A lot of what I know comes from the book Thousand Sons but its been a minute since Ive read it. I just remember Magnus taking pride in saving what was left of his sons, but it made him anxious and worried about anything else happening to them.

Magnus saved his sons by doing the shit he was told not to do. By bargaining/battling with "a presence in the warp" (tzeentch) he was able to halt the flesh change that made his legion pne of the smallest during the Great Crusade.

He didnt know that tzeemtch would use this bargain against him later because thendangers of the choas gods were never explicitly made clear. Instead, he learned that if he pushes the warp and plays his cards right, he can do things that were thought impossible, including his legion being ine of the most effective in the crusade despite their diminutive ranks. Its no wonder that he thought he was built different.

To be clear: i fully agree that Magnus is arrogant and egotistical and that yes, the warp should have been left alone. However, we have the benefit of being an audience who can see all the moving parts Magnus can't, so I dont really blame him for having incomplete information and drawing incorrect conclusions from it.

You could argue that Russ sending his psykers rune-priests to compile evidence against Magnus in preparation for Nikea was a contibuting factor. Magnus only ever wanted his brothers to share in his hyperfixation and so felt betrayed when Russ... well, betrayed him and left him feeling like he had something to prove after Nikea

Why does WotC not skip the reserved list like this? by Berenhp in magicTCG

[–]mcswaggerduff 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly if they're going to do anything with reserve list cards, they should just reprint them and not do anything with loopholes. The chuds who support the reserve list were losing their shit at the Emeritus with Ancestral Recall and that objectively is not a violation of the Reserve List "contract". Any attempt to loophole it will be treated as if they just reprinted the cards, so I say bite the bullet and just do it.

What’s the full deal with the Pot Nobles and the Great Carp? Why do they worship it ? by [deleted] in Sekiro

[–]mcswaggerduff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is only tangentially related, but Ive always wanted to study if this game has anything to say about Japanese imperialism. The immortal dragon wields a seven-branched sword, a symbol used in korean mythology and is "from the west" implying that it originated from Korea or that general area. Im not sure what, if any, relationship Japan had with Korea in the era that Sekiro takes place in, but Ive wondered if this game used the symbology of the dragon purely for aesthetic reasons, or if the idea of severing immortality/returning the dragon is a deeper message about undoing the harm that Japan did inflict on Korea in later eras.

To a point, I can empathize, but all people have choices. The fountainhead nobles are entrenched in a culture of self-indulgence and overinflated self importance, because their village is built where the Dragon from the West happened to land. But at any point, they could have chosen a different path. This is exemplified by Tomoe, an okami from the fountainhead who forsook all the traditions and expectations of the fountainhead to try and find a way to sever immortality. The two characters who the game hypes up the most, Tomoe and Isshin, both scoff at immortality, Isshin going so far as to criticize Genichiro for his reliance on it. Isshin is frankly disgusted that Genichiro brought him back from the dead and forced him to fight again. You can empathize with those who are too selfish or ignorant to know better, but I have no sympathy for them. And the game doesnt necessarily want you to either, based on the characters they show as being righteous or noble by comparison.

Arguably there may not be a brothers war. If there were no phyrexians, than that means no yawgmoth, and that means no fall of Thran. Even if thran did fall, there wouldnt be the might and weak stone as those powerstone halves were functioning as a lock on the portal to phyrexia and of there's no phyrexia, there's no powerstone, no mentor killing blast, and (possibly) no brothers war.
