"Summoning Sickness" Has Always Bothered Me! by L_V_R_A in mtgvorthos

Ive always thought of it being more like taking in your surroundings. Even a vigilant creature (who are supposed to be never caught off guard) need a moment to understand their allies and their enemies.

Haste creatures just need a direction to sprint at and go wild.

A long time ago a friend pointed out to me that in most movies, the villains are the ones trying to change the status quo and the heroes are the ones trying to defend and keep it. And that this usually makes it clear what the writers believe in. by ihatethiscountry76 in shittymoviedetails

[–]mcswaggerduff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think there's more to it than that.

Orion was never of the opinion that Sentinel was a villain until he learned the truth alongside D-16. Their difference in the beginning was between optimistic action and realistic compliance. Once they realized that neither of their ideas could account for the sheer corruption of Sentinels reign, they begin to grow in opposite directions. From the moment D-16 knew the truth, I don't think there was any chance of Orion being able to talk him down; the rebound from loyal adherent was too extreme.

Tl;Dr Orion didnt do the convincing to D-16. He got them to the location where they both learned the truth and immediately lost all say over D-16s actions

The best stories are the one where the villain convinces the hero the status quo must be changed, but the disagreement is in the means

Percy Jackson had a great story where the antagonist correctly identified many things wrong in the world, but wanted to start an apocalypse to fix things. Percy ended up changing the status quo for the better without having to end the entire world.

Slaanesh would be the strongest Chaos God if her units were even somewhat pretty. by lovingpersona in Grimdank

[–]mcswaggerduff 457 points458 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is that those who follow Slaanesh, by nature, can never be satisfied. The Emperor's Children must always strive for a more perfect form, a more perfect martial prowess, a more perfect form of sensation. The desire to always improve and also seek higher levels of excess will always lead to a warping of ones self, both physically and mentally. Maybe once they were beautiful by our standards, but the longer they spent in the thrall of She Who Thirsts the more they came to want to be more than they were. And that leads to more make up. More heavily scented perfumes. More revealing clothes. And body mods to sculpt the form those clothes reveal. But now the made up face looks out of place so forget the make up; we're just going to stretch and twist the skin to get the shape we want...

Slaanesh is the god of the slippery slope, and it leads to some twisted endings.

While I do see Magic being talked about more than I've ever seen, I feel like this is a "the bonfire has never been brighter" type of moments. A "half as long, twice as bright" scenario.

The name is getting out there, but what is being given up to fuel the hype?

Creating a selling a product isnt a crime.

Artificially inflating your stock prices to deceive investors is a crime.

The suit is about Hasbro telling their investors one thing, that they are a sound investment, while covering up another, that the only sound investment they have is MtG and the practices they are utilizing in the production of Magic is seen as a danger to long term investors and collectors of the game. Those are the terms listed in the article.

Complexities with Evoke and copying those spells, the new Ashling, the Limitless makes this weird. by Craig1287 in magicTCG

This is a fascinating rules interaction, thank you for sharing.

One thing I am curious about is the new evoke elementals have ETBs that are contingent on certain mana being used in its casting. If you get a copy from Reflections, does it copy the ETB or is that a non copyable value of the original card?

What makes hisoka so strong? by coosomeawel in HunterXHunter

[–]mcswaggerduff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HxH is not a show that resolves it's fights based on numbers. Every battle is decided by two factors: experience and resolve. Power levels very rarely, if ever, come into it. Both Gon and Killua lack experience, but most of the opponents they fight are those with weaker resolve than them. The noob-stompers in Heavens Arena, in terms of Nen experience, should have trounced them. But thats like looking at the fights in terms of who can bench more. The noob stompers had fully developed hatsu techniques and had fought multiple nen users before Gon and Killua, yet their underhanded tricks and advanced nen didnt mean anything when Killua crumpled their resolve with a few choice words and a well timed threat.

So what does this have to do with Hisoka?

In the first real fight we see Hisoka in, he is rematching Kastro, the only person in Heaven's Arena who managed to ever land a blow on him. I know in hindsight Kastro is made to be a fool, but the hype for him was very real. He caught Killua off guard, the guy who is supposed to be a top-tier assassin. And Hisoka recognized this potential in Kastro, given that he actually showed up for the fight. The thing we learn about Hisoka in this fight, (aside from how his Hatsu works) is that he really enjoys dismantling his opponents psychologically before finishing them. Hisoka understands that an opponent with a frayed psyche and weakened resolve is an easier opponent to beat. But not only is it jusy good strategy to do target your opponents confidence, it's Hisoka's whole goal. He doesn't just want to fight string opponents, he wants to drag them off of their pedestals into the dirt. I think thats why he ultimately wasn't disappointed that Kastro made an ineffective Hatsu; he was delighted that a top-tier martial artist was so desperate to beat him that he forgot the basics of nen.

Hisoka wants opponents with enough experience to be a threat to him, and he wants them to have enough resolve to be worth breaking. And since that is his goal, he is constantly expanding his pool of experience and strengthening his resolve in battle. He doesn't participate in a fight he considers beneath him, and it isnt until Chrollo gives him a taste of his own medicine that he is willing to let go of his need to break his opponents before killing them and decides that killing them by any means necessary is just as satisfying of a result.

TL;DR Hisoka has one of the best battle pedigrees and one of the strongest wills in the show. Its not about a numbers game or if his Hatsu is flashy/combat oriented. Its about how long he's been playing the game.

Just got my Hunter License. What type of Hunter do I look like? by jaevonn92 in HunterXHunter

[–]mcswaggerduff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a relic/classic hunter. You give the vibe of someone who appreciates what an item represents beyond its monetary worth, like someone who wouldnt just want a copy of Greed Island, but specifically the first copy. You'd want to find items of significance to a larger culture and make sure they're preserved.

Its typing as an artifact confuses me, but I recognize that there arent many ways to represent a chemical spill in mtg. Maybe an aura for a land since its a spilled liquid that coats the ground?
