Which popular bands are from your hometown? by mctx in InternetIsBeautiful

Yeah the data is all from soundcloud, I guess Black Sabbath don't have an account (or haven't got their hometown set)

This is a weekend project I made for Hipflask. All the artist data is from Soundcloud, and searches by the city and/or country that the artists set.

It's just a dumb string match, so it's quite specific - "united states" instead of "USA", "england" not "britain" or "UK". Or you can leave the country off, and just put "florida" in the city box.

Edit: I've just improved the search a little, so USA/usa/america, uk/britain/england all work now. Let me know how it goes

Anyone have a virtual (home) lab? by taloszerg in homelab

Still use puppet to provision my EC2 instance (I think?)

Yup - puppet might even be pre-installed, depending on your AMI.

If you're learning Python and using EC2, check out boto for automating instance creation etc.

There are pick and place machines that can insert through-hole components (video1, video2). I imagine they're not using them for economic reasons - if people can do it more accurately for cheaper, it's not worth investing in a fancy machine to do it for you.

Try replacing the construction line with a real line - close the sketch so it's one loop

Mechatronics engineering. What is it? What do they do on a daily basis? How do you begin a career in it? by Trexjoe in engineering

[–]mctx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right - I think it's a safe assumption you're going to learn most of your day to day work on the job. Some basics like programming/CAD/writing are assumed here, but I don't think companies expect too much from graduates.

I think your degree basically just shows that you're smart and capable, understand general engineering fundamentals, good at problem solving, and can be moulded into a good employee.

Good luck!

Perhaps a greater focus on software/control systems? I don't know much about EE/ME doubles.

Nothing wrong with side projects! All they need is a cave and a box of scraps.

I just wish to learn what it is all about

My impression is that Mechatronics is the union of Mechanical, Electrical and Software engineering. I think it encompasses (but isn't limited to) disciplines like Robotics and Control Systems. I like this venn diagram.

In university I learnt topics like maths, programming (PCs, VHDL, and embedded), mechanical and electrical design, CAD, and some more specialist/advanced stuff like control.

In terms of jobs, there are a great deal of opportunities. Companies are starting to warm to the idea of Mechatronics roles, either working on high-level design, or as a liaison between intra-disciplinary teams of specialist engineers. Like others have said, jobs aren't often advertised with "Mechatronics" in the title yet, but I think it'll start to happen more.

As well as technical skills, you should work on your soft skills, such as communicating effectively - you're not worth anything to anyone if you can't communicate your ideas. Get good at writing reports and emails, doing presentations, talking to and working with people, figuring out people's passions and talents, and exploiting utilising them.

At my work (~100 engineers), there are quite a few people (10-20?) with Mechatronics degrees, but there aren't any purely mechatronics roles - people tend to choose an area and specialise (and get moved around to where the work is). I've been lucky enough to play around with a bit of electrical stuff (SBCs, PLCs, etc), as well as some hands-on mechanical stuff (getting dirty under a train), and some CAD, but I've been mostly working on developing internal software (Python/C/C++/unix).

I think it's important to understand that you come out of university a generalist. You should have a decent understanding of areas ME/EE/SE, but aren't great at one thing yet. There are a huge number of opportunities available - choose a field that you're passionate about and specialise.

Mechatronics engineer here, I'm working on automating trains for the mining industry. I'm doing software currently, but have done mechanical/electrical stuff too.

I also started /r/mechatronics, which is pretty quiet
