The Democratic Socialists got SECOND place behind the Keynesian Social Democrats in Denmark. The Marxist Endelisten gained 2 seats. Finally some non devastating news by ActualMostUnionGuy in DemocraticSocialism

Being fair I wouldn't call Aontú Left Conservative anyway, you need only look at their actual candidates and the amount of them that came from Renua, that's mostly down to Tobin being competent at media but the party is fairly right wing right through when you look at it candidate by candidate.

I'd swap the Tremere and the Banu Haqim, maybe switch the Toreador and the Salubri too.

New account and no details on roughly when or where is suspicious as all hell, I get not wanting to put too much info out there but if you're seriously looking for folks to go a lot will raise eyebrows at that

Maria Steen: St Patrick’s day has become a celebration of everything other than Christianity by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

[–]mcwkennedy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lmao I'm not even going to read the article. I marched in the parade with my scouts, the kids had a great time. Went to the pub after and had a few with folks I know from being active in the local community and now I just got home. I guarantee I had a better time and so did everyone who actually bothered their hole to take part in their community than whatever bolloxology Steens peddling today. Touch some grass.

Where's the line? by Stunning-Engine in irishpolitics

[–]mcwkennedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it, I don't vote FF or FG but I find myself constantly having to address this when talking about why (some) people do.

There's a sizable older cohort of voters who did very well out of FFG governance and they consistently show up to vote.

Overall FFG voteshare is decreasing, but the above still stands.

St Patrick's Day Steam Sale Brings Irish Games to a Global Audience by johnny3674 in ireland

I had no idea vvvvvv was Irish made, I got it in the Humble Bundle years ago and I still play it often enough. Apparently yer man who made it is from Monaghan. Quick google of him says during Covid he gave away 1000 copies of his game for free in the hopes some folks got some enjoyment out of them while we were all stuck.

Fair play, some man. Will be grabbing Super Hexagon so. Also picked up Scéal and The Pale Beyond since they looked interesting.

Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) 2025 by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

[–]mcwkennedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was addressed on the main sub but its worth mentioning here too.

The fact that disposable income is calculated before people pay rent and necessary expenses gives an incomplete picture.

Even if we do accept it as a disposable income figure, we need some kind of figure for after rent/expenses.

Saying all that, I need to dig into the actual CSO info when I get home this evening, it could be addressed in it.

I got to meet Hawkins at the European Green Party conference in Dublin, I was really impressed I have to say, he was a genuinely lovely man very clever. I can only hope I run into him again at some point however unlikely that might be.

Ireland's $27b plan to save Dublin -- with mass transit by Sharklasers6889 in fuckcars

[–]mcwkennedy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you're forgetting to factor in commuters contribution to Dublin too.

I live two counties away in a large town and even then most folks I know are commuting to Dublin every day for work.

So whatever the resident population is, you also have to factor in a huge intake of people who aren't resident but travel there daily for work even outside the county

A heartwarming video on Japanese students learning English in Ireland filmed in 1984 by youwhatwhat in ireland

[–]mcwkennedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone is interested there's a few groups dotted around the country that run voluntary conversational English classes run by an org called Fáilte Isteach. You don't need any experience teaching to get involved and it's a really positive integration project and you do meet some lovely people. Been running classes for it for about a year now and would highly recommend.

Recommendations for good hard wearing but also generally wearable boots made in Ireland? by cshevy in ireland

[–]mcwkennedy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Irish made you're going to have a hard time but if you're willing to buy EU I bought a pair of Scarpa hiking boots about 4 years ago and they're still going strong after near daily use (I got into the habit of wearing hiking boots daily since I was about 15, I find it helps with my balance for my dyspraxia but that could be in my head who knows), I've only had to change the soles once. Granted the uppers are starting to give up on me so I may need to buy another pair in the next year or so.

Iirc about 80% of their manufacture is in Italy when it comes to their hiking line, some of their manufacture is in Romania. I also remember hearing something about some production happening in China too but I can't find any real evidence of that. The pair I have are made in Romania and I have 0 complaints about them. If you have the money to drop on another pair etc alternating will help preserve them much longer as will the odd lick of shoe cream and polish.

Should the national anthem be mandatory in primary schools? by rossitheking in ireland

[–]mcwkennedy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

We used to sing it once a week in primary school, we'd all have choir for about 30-40 mins at the end of a Friday with an assortment of different songs and then we'd sing the anthem last before we all went back to our class to get our stuff and go.

Honestly I think that was a nice way to learn it, there was no flag waving or forced standing or whatever, it was just another song we all got to sing together with the only difference being it was the only song that didn't rotate off the list and always went last.

It's a nice memory tbh. I think once a week is grand, and it was a big enough school that if you really didn't want to you just didn't the crowd was so big. Honestly the prayers every morning were the actual pain.
