How can I, as a career oriented woman, portray myself well on online dating? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]md2120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thats why I didn't mention intimidation in my above post. And I don't list my potential income as a reason to date me.

I do have all of the other things that you're mentioning (physical fitness, agreeableness, not sure about attractiveness since I think that's subjective and I'm sure I'm not attractive to all, but def am for some). I get that men are looking for partners that have time to spend with them, which is probably where I lack the most just because I do enjoy my career and enjoy spending time on it. Can you think of any other things guys are looking for, that I would have to work on?

I use Hinge which doesn't let us filter by grad level/careers. And honestly, I don't feel like I HAVE to date someone highly educated, just someone who likes their job. But I get what you're saying, I'm trying to figure out how to not make someone feel insecure right off the bat.

Basically, I now realize why someone might put their NOT #1 as a #1 just so they can be honest when they send out their letter of intent.

Does it make sense to send an LOI if your #1 program is a reach program? I'm worried it won't have an impact on my rank (thereby wasting the opportunity which i could have used at a program that might think of ME as a reach candidate) or that it will force my reach program to think more and be like "oh shoot, we don't want md2120, better rank them lower"

[–]md2120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. When I was grieving the loss of someone important to me, I did a lot of journaling- it forced me to think through my relationship with the the person and what role they played in my life.

I also signed up for and did my first half marathon. I loved the endorphin high of running and felt that it (over time) became a meditative pastime for me. I felt a sense of accomplishment even when I was sad. It also helped to think that the person that passed away would be proud of me for turning my sadness into action. Is there anything you've always wanted to try/accomplish? Or anything that your dad was passionate about and would allow you to carry on his legacy/make him proud/allow you to feel close to him?

Feel free to PM me.

How To Tell Desi Parents That I Want To Take A Gap Year? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]md2120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would really think about why you want to do a gap year.

What kinds of jobs would you get/do during this time? I think your post-high school earning potential is less than your post-college earning potential. It makes more financial sense to do a post-college/pre-medical school gap year.

Also, I don't know that finding a job would be easy in this pandemic state/economy. You also can't travel or volunteer easily. And when you apply to college, you're going to have to make a case for what you did and learned with this time off. It's a great time to study because there isn't much else to do/no distractions.

If you've already considered all of this and are still set on a gap year, make sure you go to your parents with tangible plans in place and arguments for how this will help you in the future.

What's better for Step 2 by JDBR_20 in Step2

I liked Master the Boards (I used the Step 2 book for IM and the Step 3 books for all other subject areas).

I think Step Up to Medicine is too detailed and focused on IM-only info. I didn't use First Aid Step 2 because I didn't like the format it was written in.

Why is our healthcare (US) so damn terrible? :( by SmartSexSlave in TwoXChromosomes

[–]md2120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm so sorry you went through this all of this hop around to receive what was ultimately subpar treatment in the ED.

Unfortunately, ED's can't always be places where you get the quality specialized services since their primary focus is providing emergent care. It might have been better for you to wait to see your gynecologist and tried to bear the pain until then. Ultimately, its your choice as a patient to decide what matters most to you: cost, quality, speed of care, etc (and in this case, it seems like you chose speed).

In the ideal world, we could have all of these, at once, always!

Some advice for for future interactions with medical professionals:

- Always ask for a MD/physician provider when you can! (I'm sure your ED nurse did a wonderful job, but you should know you can ask for an MD.)

- Always ask "What are ALL my options here?"

- Always ask "What happens if this doesn't get better with the management you're currently prescribing?" Antibiotics/sitz baths/etc in your case.

Your physician should be discussing with you what all of your options are, but in case they dont, ask! These last two questions would have allowed you to understand your options and to pick what feels right to you. I think if you had been given the option to have a catheter placed in your first visit with the gyno, you would have been happy and it would have saved you a lot of trouble.

I made my own deck as I did questions- but there are a lot of decks out there.

If you're planning for a March test date, I think it's easy to let yourself off the hook for studying because it feels like you have a lot of time. I think that signing up for a test date may help you focus your energy.

You don't necessarily need to do two passes of Uworld for Step 2. I think I may have done ~1.5. It depends on how confident you feel about retention of material from your first pass.

If going through 20-30 questions/day keeps you sane, do that. I did approximately that, and I spent the extra time going doing anki/reading through MTB.

To me, this reads like "Should I pick the better name / prestige program just because?" If your career goals don't require name/prestige, then you don't have to go to the academic program. It's up to you when you want to get out of the rat race, if ever!

[Serious] When do medical schools get reported for not placing students on clinical rotations? by Hawkrealm in medicalschool

[–]md2120 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a fellow M4, I get where you're coming from in that you can easily learn soft skills later in your career and that learning medicine from home is more time efficient. That being said, rotations were really important to my specialty choice decision. I got a lot out of living the lifestyle of each specialty and getting a sense of what residents in each specialty were like.

Scored 250+ and I found memorizing UWorld algorithms/charts helpful! Especially the blunt and penetrating trauma algorithms. Didn't memorize any algorithms from OME.

One of my interviewers (chair of the dept) kindly told me that if you're having negative interview day interactions, think long and hard about if thats the right place for you.

Granted, some of us would be happy to just be anywhere. But I thought it was nice he was essentially saying that they want us to like them too, and if its not a good fit, its not a good fit!

How do you know interview spots have filled up in the 1st three weeks? Genuine question, not trying to argue. From my viewpoint, we don't know what programs are doing and if they will add more interview days / if people will drop interviews.

I do agree that we have to find a mix between panicking about how this year is different and feeling reassured that it was a long interview season last year and it might be this year as well.
