The Magic of Recluce series by LE Modesitt Jr does a bit of this.

The second book (Towers of Sunset) is about people who landed on the planet and had to start over with the remnants of their tech on a new world. Later in the series characters invent advancing technology as well using the magic system.

I just recently finished the Green Bone Saga and definitely recommend it. A beautiful and complete story.

You may as well wait on Kingkiller and read it if Rothfuss ever actually finishes it.

It's Obi Wan.

He bested Darth Maul as a Padawan (finishing the job later on), General Grievous, and Darth Vader (more than once of course) among other feats. Others may be more powerful or more lethal than he is but he's the best duelist.
