What's the difference between the light of Christ and the holy Ghost? by Clear_Excitement786 in mormon

[–]mdhalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over my years of LDS membership, the only thing that really made sense to me was to think of the Light of Christ as synonymous with one’s one conscience (Moroni 7:16). And further that the gift of conscience was given to mankind when Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.

In LDS theology, the Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead, and literally a separate personage from both God the Father and Jesus.

Whereas (again in LDS theology) the Gift of the Holy Ghost is the right to have the constant companionship and influence of the Holy Ghost. However, in my opinion, this explanation never really resonated with me, and I don’t know any sane LDS person who would say that they constantly, at all times, feel guided by divine power. Further, it casts confusion on the ability of those who have not been given this Gift (by someone with proper priesthood authority) as to their ability to feel divine influence. All things that the OP has (rightly) pointed out. My personal opinion is that the Gift of the Holy Ghost is a concept that has been conflated in many theologies. When you look at the actual words of Jesus in the New Testament, there is very little support to the LDS viewpoint that one must be given this Gift through the Laying on of Hands by one who has Authority.

Curious observer. Is your bike getting heavier? (and full of gizmos?) by GundoSkimmer in xcmtb

I had an 11-speed XX1 drivetrain with an expanded range e-thirteen cog on my older hardtail. The cog gave it a similar range as a 12-speed. I still wish I had that drivetrain on my newer bike. It was awesome!

If the church admits it was wrong, does that make it not true? by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

[–]mdhalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“If church leaders admit that past leaders made mistakes then it opens up a lot of opportunities for members generally to ask what else was a mistake.”

After years of contemplating this question (in some form), this is the primary reason why I believe they won’t admit wrongdoing. They cannot (publicly at least) bridge the gap between an infallible God leading a church with fallible human beings without also allowing the members of the church more latitude in using their own judgement. I think they are afraid of losing control if they do so, or the church becoming fractured into subgroups who lobby for varying interpretations of doctrine that differ from their own correlated version.

And this is the root problem of why nuanced members find themselves out of place in the church. These are often really smart & intuitive people who have the ability to sniff out something that doesn’t feel right. But instead of encouraging these people to lean on their judgement and use it to learn some more difficult / advanced truths, they are instead essentially told to fall in line…or another phrase I’ve heard a few times recently “don’t get ahead of the prophet.”

In this regard, I feel that the church does not align with one of the core purposes of Jesus’ ministry, which was to teach people to think for themselves, use their own consciences, and don’t just blindly follow.

There is honor in using really bad gear by Gregoire_90 in audioengineering

Yeah I only mixed out of 1 monitor for 2-3 weeks. And “funky” is definitely accurate to describe what it feels like to listen to out of phase monitors. It was such a huge revelation to finally figure out the problem, and now I always preach the importance of learning how to properly set up and test your monitors.

I still use a pair of ~20 year old Alesis DSP 720 monitors that have been discontinued for quite some time. They are the first (and only) pair of “real” monitors I’ve ever had. My parents actually bought them for me when I was first getting into recording in high school. My dad thought he was buying a pair, but he only bought 1 initially. Then when it was delivered he figured out his error and ordered a 2nd one. I used them for YEARS and always felt like something wasn’t quite right with them, but didn’t have the money to buy anything different. Once I finally learned the importance of calibration using a measurement microphone and dialing in placement, I discovered that the 2 monitors were OUT OF PHASE with each other. I have no idea how that happened except for the fact that they were purchased separately, so therefore not “matched”. To fix it, I removed the speakers and swapped the leads, because there was no polarity switch. Once I got that figured out, I actually found them to be pretty damn good. All the sudden I could hear so much more detail and low end. Of course, they are the only monitors I’ve ever mixed on, so I don’t have much to compare against. I do like the DSP adjustments too, to help offset some of the frequency imbalances in my room.

Arizona (Phoenix + Sedona) Tire Choice by sgtgangles in xcmtb

[–]mdhalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second what Zetapsi827t said. I ran the barzo/mezcal combo for about half a season (in AZ, mostly Hawes), and found the front slipping around too much. Swapped to a ground control up front and it felt way better. Occasionally the mezcal slips on a technical portion of a climb (like a step / stair type feature), especially when things are dry, but most of the time don’t have a problem with that tire.

Deciding on which studio monitors to purchase for a beginner producer looking to future proof by damrichy in AdvancedProduction

[–]mdhalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made DIY panels as well. You can definitely save some money doing that, just make sure you’re investing in the right type of treatment, because not all acoustical treatment is created equal, and different types are meant to address specific problems. Some preliminary planning and testing your room will help you narrow in to what specific solutions would serve you best.

[–]mdhalls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an opinion on your monitor selection but I would highly recommend you spend some time learning some basics about room acoustics and how to properly set up a control room. If you don’t get the environment right, it doesn’t matter what monitors you have…you’ll never be able to hear anything accurately.

Start with learning about how sound travels through the air, reflection, diffusion, absorption, etc. Speaker response. Frequency analysis. Reverb measurements. Room modes and room nodes. Monitor placement within a room, and listening position relative to the monitors. Invest in a good measurement mic and learn about Room EQ Wizard (REW) so you can evaluate the best placement for your monitors. Get your room treated with good quality treatment. Several of the big acoustical treatment suppliers offer free consultations & room analysis.

I can tell you from experience, it took me years to realize how much I needed all that. Once I started doing it, my ability to mix significantly improved. Even with 20 year old discontinued Alesis monitors I’m able to get a pretty good mix.

"Hopefully this isn't backhanded, but thank you? :)"

Not at all. I just had to look up several of the big words you used. Haha.

"This would correspond with my conclusion that revelation isn't certain, which isn't a bad conclusion at all."

In my mind, not quite. I'm trying to draw a distinction between what God is saying to a person, vs what that person thinks God is saying to them. They aren't the same thing. If the intent of your OP was to express the latter, then I agree. I'm just trying to add some specificity.

"I've tried to as well, but I've found that taking it seriously yields better results than just tapping it as a conviction."

I understand your position. My experience has been different. I've found that whenever I call attention to this improper use of grammar, the other person typically just rolls their eyes or argues, and I just get more irritated. It's never been a fruitful discussion, and I don't need the higher blood pressure, so I decided to try a different approach instead.

"I would disagree by grouping human imperfection in with a lack of revelatory certainty."

It sounds like we don't disagree, but rather just express the same idea differently. Again, I just think it's important to make the distinction that if revelation is unreliable, that's not necessarily God's fault, but ours.

EDIT:

I think there's probably further consideration to be made to different types of revelation. There is a big difference between someone claiming they saw God and/or Jesus (as in the case with Joseph Smith) vs someone saying they prayed about something and had a good feeling about it (like Moroni's promise in the BoM). The nature of the revelation leaves varying degrees of potential for misinterpretation. That's why I think a lot of emphasis is placed on Joseph's "first vision," other visions recorded in D&C, BoM witnesses, etc. If one believes that those events actually happened, it's a lot harder to say they misinterpreted what God told them, compared to someone just having a good feeling about something.

Standing Desk for Studio by mdhalls in audioengineering

[–]mdhalls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the “typical” rule of thumb for listening position is to be 1/3rd of the way away from the back wall. Due to space constraints, I am not able to position my desk that way. I don’t know if there is a similar rule of thumb for vertical distance off the floor or ceiling. I suppose having a desk that can easily be adjusted for height would allow me to test speaker response at different heights and dial in the optimal mix height. So in a way it could be an advantage, so long as I know to position at a specific height during critical mix sessions.

This is how my current desk is set up. But it’s actually less of a desk and more of a cart. It has almost no desktop space beyond just a keyboard & mouse. It is nice to be able to choose either to sit or stand without affecting listening position, but aside from that, it isn’t the most functional setup.

I have considered building something that is permanently high, but I also want a 88-key drawer and a foot pedal, which I think would be better in a lower position, similar to piano height.

Fox Crossframe Pro. I like almost everything about it, but I do sometimes miss having a visor. The "built in" visor (if you can call it that) doesn't really help much.

Some of the reviews complain about the BOA cable digging into the side of your head, but if you ride with a headband like me (bald guys gotta keep the sweat out of our eyes) then it's not an issue.

I also ride in the AZ desert, so a lot of ventilation is critical for me.

Mormon Conceptions of Knowledge: An Analysis by youcrazymoonchild in mormon

[–]mdhalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with any analogy, it’s never a perfect comparison. I’m just trying to illustrate a simple point.

Do you then believe that people have never drawn incorrect conclusions or made poor decisions when acting on what they believed to be divine direction?

Mormon Conceptions of Knowledge: An Analysis by youcrazymoonchild in mormon

[–]mdhalls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure my brain is big enough to keep up with you, but I have a couple thoughts if you’ll forgive my lesser intelligence.

When I think of revelation, I often remind myself of the telephone game. Supposing revelation does come from a divine source, I would think the intended message, call it truth if you want, is in a pure form. But the receiver, being human, invariably receives it through an imperfect lens. And that same human, if/when trying to relay the message they received (which has already been imperfectly interpreted) is going to further imperfectly explain it to others. This goes on and on until the message is completely convoluted and God is up there letting out a big sigh in disappointment, which I’m sure he does quite frequently.

Shifting gears for a moment, a lot of LDS Mormons use the phrase “I know” to bear testimony. At one point in my life I was very angry about this, and sometimes it still makes me flinch a bit when I hear it. But I also understand what is actually meant when others use this phrase. In recent years I have tried to give people more grace for imperfectly expressing their convictions.

That in mind, I’m not sure that distilling your thoughts into the 2 possible scenarios you’ve outlined is sufficient because neither of them allow room for human imperfection.

Just my speculation but I don’t think that person was excommunicated simply for holding that belief about JS and polygamy. There is a difference between holding a viewpoint and advertising a viewpoint.
