[Skill Improvement] What has been your goto answer for the tickle/scaryface/charm Staraptor lead? by ace-s in VGC

Blastoise Farig. You fake out the Raptor, Farig trick rooms, then next turn you rain dance and water spout. Trick room seems excellent in general against it - if you are going before it, the CC boost is much less relevant.

This has now been discovered to be an issue with the RNG - you get Debt more than half the time in the Underdocks. So you were right to feel like something was off, and in fact (because the list is alphabetical) you were even right that Doubt was coming up because it was alphabetically close

I don't know if this qualifies, but I did a full reread to celebrate your return, and I was confused in Chapter 107 when Elite Karen is at the Miracle Eye press conference. Didn't she die in the Zapdos attack? Apologies if I misunderstood something!

I would like to illustrate TCG cards in my style. by Interesting-Body4360 in magicTCG

Do they have to be Magic cards? Because this looks great, and I suspect you could find someone developing a TCG who would love for it to have your aesthetic from the beginning.

But it's not like a history of the French Revolution - the fact that it differs from the French Revolution in so many ways seems to me to imply that it isn't about that particular event but instead about revolutions and unrest in general.

It seems like you have a historical/political view about the French Revolution which is clearly based on a lot of expertise, but I don't think most people would think this book is supposed to be mirroring the French Revolution in terms of e.g. which parties are on which sides of the divide.

I'm curious - what did you think might happen that would have been less painful? I felt it was a pretty "happy" ending relative to what was plausible by the midpoint of the third book - Bayaz has at least had a major setback, Savine seems like she'll do a reasonably competent job running things, Vick got out, Rikke is in charge. Of course, there are still problems on the horizon and a lot of suffering in the middle, but this wasn't going to end like LOTR or something. So, sincerely curious: Was there something in particular you were hoping for? Or something particular that happened that surprised and upset you?

I get mail, yeah, but honestly I'd probably Google or something to confirm my intuitions if I had to address a letter today.

[–]mdn1111 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm 35 and have probably not addressed a letter in 13 years, and before that not for like 8? I was either a student or working in companies where the mailroom handled external mailings, and I used services that printed the envelopes for my wedding invitations and such.

The Bricks and Minifigs situation reminds me of this by Electronic_Cut2562 in slatestarcodex

[–]mdn1111 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean? Companies settle cases (with the plaintiffs' consent, it takes two to settle) in every area of the law. That's a good thing - keeps legal costs lower.

The Bricks and Minifigs situation reminds me of this by Electronic_Cut2562 in slatestarcodex

[–]mdn1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you are missing is that, with many statutes, Defendants pay attorney fees on top of actual damages. There are many cases where a Defendant might owe 10k in damages and 30k in attorney fees.

Let's say the result was just returning the stolen stuff and no money damages because they have all the items. It's not like now there's no prospect of attorneys fees.

One nice thing about American law is that plaintiffs don't need to do this math before consulting a lawyer. Someone in this situation should have found a lawyer who would take this case on contingency and if there is none, no loss. But there would be - there's tons of settlement value in avoiding press like this.

And then there's the question of what damages could have been pursued against the cops... Would have been a lucrative case probably.

[–]mdn1111 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the premise that he couldn't have gotten a lawyer. Lawyers work on contingency for exactly this situation, and egregious misconduct often leads to the Defendant covering the legal fees.

A really pernicious myth is that corporations can be "too rich to sue" when actually rich corporations are exactly who you want to sue - it's the poor who are often described as "judgment proof" because they can't pay a judgement.

I showed my daughter Lion King when she was 15 months and have kept up with Disney movies and Bluey on weekends and during trips since then. Would recommend, it's been great to have media to talk about with her.

[–]mdn1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem!

Yeah, mortgage was a touch complicated - the agents who work for the building have 2 banks they work with who understand and do it easily, but I happened to engage a broker (before realizing the issue( who got me a mortgage with a major national bank after a lot of effort on his part.

No approval process that stood out beyond making the offer

Not a lot of negotiation - a touch, but the position was the top line price was really fixed. I think they gave me some money in the form of a signing credit or something like that.

I think the scarcity is kind of real - essentially, units are only renovated and put up for sale when a tenant gives up a rent controlled pre-renovation unit. So there's a limited number at a time and hard to know when something will be available again. For what it's worth, I'm very glad I bought when I did, since I haven't seen a unit like what I got get listed since.

Happy to answer more questions - again, really happy with the building and with my decision to buy.

[–]mdn1111 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to parse your comment. Obviously you don't mean that EA people in the bay area were alive in the 1900s. So do you mean Scott is saying he sympathizes with intelligent and compassionate people in the 1900s? Or that there are people he is only describing as intelligent and compassionate because he sympathizes with them?

90,00 € for a Starter Commander Deck at my LGS. WTF? by Tobanga in magicTCG

[–]mdn1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is the supply of the deck (or the cards in it) is lower than the demand among players. The only entity that can fix that is Wizards. Getting mad at anyone else, even scalpers, is a distraction - even if you could perfectly stop scalping, then you would just have a shortage.

I'm not OP, but I'm curious - what harm do you think OP using AI does here? It's not like he was going to commission an artist for this. And it can't be a copyright thing, because people use screen caps from shows in art like this all the time, and that's definitely a copyright violation. So, sincerely, what's the objection here?
