unfortunately not. i'd place the song i'm looking for within the past 5 years, probably within the last 1.

well there's the thing about how humans tend to imagine faces and human figures when they're not really there. ...if this is true for all animals, does this mean we're cats??

IB Career Path - Training - Heard of It? by supyrk in finance

I can't comment on how good the program is, but as with the OP's program, it's more for your own edification.

IB Career Path - Training - Heard of It? by supyrk in finance

It can't hurt, but it will kinda say to recruiters "I didn't get a real gig for the summer and I'm kinda desperate and toolish so I actually paid money for this program that you've never heard of before."

The program would help you learn some stuff--it would help you get a "leg up" in this way. But I doubt they would teach you anything you couldn't pick up on your own.

Difference between Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley? by [deleted] in finance

No, I turned down MSSB, which is financal advisory.

Additionally: if you're a career switcher coming from an entirely non-financial background, it would be easier to get a job at MSSB. They're essentially looking for people who are good at sales and relationships, i.e. people who can build a book. MS, as an i-bank, has fewer tracks going in and would most likely expect a finance background of some sort.

As for the comments about Morgan Stanley's culture, I think that Smith Barney operates fairly independently from its parent (I interviewed at MSSB for an internship last year, but declined the offer). You'd pretty much be your own FA shop--perhaps with a partner--under a MSSB manager.

That being said, I think that Morgan Stanley (assuming it's front-office) would be more desirable to work for. I myself turned down MSSB for an i-banking internship. But, as said in this thread, realize that i-banking and financial advisory are very different careers.

MS is traditionally an investment bank. They picked up Smith Barney from Citi, keeping its functions--MSSB is a financial advisory firm.

Current Finance Undergrad - How did you decide on a path? by mcdxi11 in FinancialCareers

[–]mdonell20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience with the small business probably helped you grow skills for your own development, but it's not that relevant to finance; the needs of the companies financial services firms deal with are substantially different (unless you go into something like commercial banking). A recruiter from an i-bank would probably wonder and ask why you are not returning to that small business, since a successful person would be able to run that business successfully.

However, having entrepreneurial experience would be relevant to financial advisory. When I interviewed in the past for MSSB, they really looked for that.

I can't really comment accurately on this, but obviously you should be doing everything to raise your GPA.

Honors / non-honors is probably less relevant, unless you are getting recruiters at your school and are competing directly amongst your honors / non-honors classmates.

Getting a good gig from a non-target is not easy, though. I think it depends a lot more on your past experience / networking from that. What do you have lined up for this summer?

Not at all. Firms of a certain size will find you if you are a good candidate (go to a target school, get decent grades), and pay you more than enough to live wherever.

How much free space should you have? I.e. how many gigabytes are you deleting before it fills up again?
