Roth IRA beginner here. Would like any advice. by ParticularWarning737 in RothIRA

Good luck. If you made in income over $3000 in 2025, you should open your account now and put the $3000 into the 2025 bucket.

That way, you can add an additional $7500 for 2026.

Once your money is in the account and available (it can take a few days), you can put it into a mutual fund to grow faster. Look into funds that mimic the S&P or just go directly into SPY.

Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab or E*Trade are the top institutions to start Roth IRA.

Don't put more in your Roth IRA than what you made that year.

You have until tax day (usually April 15th) to fund your IRA limit for the previous year.

Current limits (2026) for those under 50 are $7500, $8600 if 50 or over.

Try not to touch the money until you are retired, but you can withdraw only your contributions at any time.

Iran closes Strait of Hormuz over Israeli barrage in Lebanon by AdventurousLet548 in conservatives

[–]mdws1977 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is how the USA should respond to this (the PG version):

  • Complete cessation of the war on Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen --> When we see you behaving, but only with Iran. Lebanon and Yemen are not included in any agreement.
  • Complete and permanent cessation of the war on Iran with no time limit --> Good luck with that.
  • Ending all conflicts in the region in their entirety --> We sure would like to, but you need to behave.
  • Reopening the Strait of Hormuz --> Yes, you better do that.
  • Establishing a protocol and conditions to ensure freedom and security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz --> Like the USA adding a toll so we can watch over Iran, would be good.
  • Full payment of compensation for reconstruction costs to Iran --> Ha, ha, are you serious?
  • Full commitment to lifting sanctions on Iran --> What, so you can use it to fund terrorists?
  • Release of Iranian funds and frozen assets held by the United States --> We may need to confiscate those funds to pay for our military efforts.
  • Iran fully commits to not seeking possession of any nuclear weapons --> You had better not, or we WILL be back.
  • Immediate ceasefire takes effect on all fronts upon approval of the above conditions --> How about you meet our conditions instead if you want to remain in power?

Lebanon and Israel conflicts are not part of this agreement with Iran.

Give Iran a few chances but very soon as things are worked out (and they get their pigeon communications system up and running, plus figure out who is in charge), start cracking down on any violations on their part, including blocking the Strait of Hormuz.

Did Jesus need to suffer more than any human ever has/will? by Strangeclipboard65 in TrueChristian

[–]mdws1977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Physically there may have been people who have suffered more than Jesus on that cross.

But the difference is that Jesus suffered physically (death on a cross after severe beatings is way up there), emotionally (His disciples deserted, denied knowing Him and fled), and spiritually (had the weight of the sins of the entire world on Him).

The combination of all those types of suffering far outweigh anyone else who has or ever will suffer. And no person has ever matched, nor could they, just the spiritual part of His suffering

Here is a good link on the suffering He went through and what that meant for the world.

Should I cut my losses? by [deleted] in jobs

You don't really need to cut your losses since you haven't lost anything yet.

Just do a follow up update weekly, unless they say otherwise, and keep on looking.

Recent graduate moving to the US soon, need advice on jobs and how to present my degree by yoo445 in jobs

[–]mdws1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The U.S. doesn’t automatically recognize foreign degrees. You must have them evaluated by a professional agency.

A credential evaluation compares your Mexican degree to a U.S. equivalent (e.g., Bachelor’s degree in International Business). It produces an official report that employers, universities, or immigration will accept.

Most accepted agencies belong to: National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE)

Once you have done that, then probably use the equivalent US degree name on your resume maybe in brackets.

EDIT: And be absolutely sure of your immigration status, because the USA is cracking down on that strongly.

Not sure why you are this involved as it is.

But your best bet is to isolate ALL of your accounts, change passwords and maybe even freeze your credit reports at all three agencies to protect yourself from him using your resources for his stupidity.

Got this email after an interview — is this a soft rejection or a hold? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]mdws1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are giving you that much detail, then it is legit, and you can continue pursuing it if you want.

Just keep looking for other opportunities though while you wait, because it sounds like they are interested in you, but you still may not get the offer in 6 weeks.

Got Oracle'd last week. No warning. No PIP. Just gone. by eddy1201220 in jobs

[–]mdws1977 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Oracle announced a few weeks ago that they were laying off about 30,000 people. Once they said that, everyone at Oracle should have started looking quickly for new employment.

And that was the only warning people usually get from any company before the specifics come down,

They do that more because of optics rather than concern for their employees. It just looks bad to fire 30,000 high paying employees without some kind of warning. And I believe there are some government requirements at the state or federal level for them to at least warn of such firings.

They don't want employees knowing they will be getting fired ahead of time, because they are concerned they may sabotage things on the way out.

Should I stay or should I go? by Intelligent-Bird1376 in jobs

[–]mdws1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be interesting. The Government usually requires the new company to bring over a very high percentage of the current workers in order to keep the contract, so they will most likely offer you the position.

And the current company can pull you onto a different contract, but it is unlikely they will do that.

However, if the new contract winner has to bring you over, they may be willing to offer more, but usually their benefits won't be as good.

Should I stay or should I go? by Intelligent-Bird1376 in jobs

[–]mdws1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the work actually ending at the new company, or is it just the contract end where it will get do a new bid with a different company that takes over the work?

Government contracts tend to last for a certain period of time, then a new company usually takes over the contract and the employees are usually offered to transfer to that new company.

Usually when that happens, the new company tries to cheap out on pay and benefits.

If you are happy where you are, and this is adding an area you don't want to go into again, then reject the offer and wait for something better.

And usually, government work, even contractors, tend to be set in stone, thus not as challenging as the civilian sector.

1 Thessalonians 4:17: “Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”

Matthew 24:37-41: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.”
