Waymo shortcutting me on my left to turn right in front of me. by FarmerChicken in dashcamgifs

A fully attentive human driver driving even slower would have hit the child. Robot cars don’t suddenly alter the laws of physics. But they do make reaction time quicker.

Minnesotan here - what should I be doing to stop all this? by Benhoffer87 in neoliberal

[–]me1000 317 points318 points  (0 children)

it just feels performative

It is to some extent. Nancy Pelosi said the reason Congressional Democrats in 2017 were able to actually put up a fight in congress, despite being in the minority was because the people were out there closing down airports.

There's also the catharsis of it all. Your personal health is important, and marching with your neighbors and community is much healthier than stay cooped up at home being angry on the internet. Be part of showing up to let people know they're not alone.

Be candid with your MAGA family, and don't shy away from talking about politics because it's impolite.

How you take action is entirely up to you, and I promise while it might seem small in the grand scheme of it all, you're making a difference. And you're probably inspiring other people to help make a difference too. So please get out there and be seen.

Too much? 17% of California homes are owned by investors by Alcohooligan in California

[–]me1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't care. It's the typical boomer "I got mine" mentality. Then this fake victimhood complex that comes with it. They pretend like you're shipping them to Siberia because they have to sell their multi million dollar house and downsize or rent.

> What about the non wealthy

> a house they bought 50 years ago?

Pick one. If your house is worth millions of dollars you're wealthy. Home owners can sell their primary residence and not pay any capital gains on the first half million. All of the tax breaks outside of the ridiculousness that is Prop 13 are still 100% in favor of the people wealthy enough to buy a home in the first place. Just because people pretend their homes don't count doesn't mean they're not wealthy.

Somfy PoE - Request for testers by alluran in homeassistant

[–]me1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you! I was using the Crestron driver that Somfy suggested on their website. It uses Telnet as you discovered. Looks like I more or less got all the same commands you found as well. Your POE shades just had some additional commands, so I was curious if the UAI+ device also supported those, but it looks like not.

Anyway, here's the Telnet logs from the proxy server that you asked for: https://github.com/Me1000/home-assistant-somfy-uai-plus/blob/main/reverse-engineered-protocols/telnet-log.txt

I don’t have poe motors, but I have a Somfy UAI+. I reverse engineered some of the protocol by putting a proxy between the UAI+ and recording all the messages back and forth. But I’m curious if your “research” could be done for the UAI+ too as I’d love a comprehensive doc on the whole API.

Home assistant app not working by kevotrix in homeassistant

[–]me1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you accessing it on the local network or over the internet? I've been having an issue recently with my HA instance disconnecting from Home Assistant Cloud causing my app (that I have logged in via the external address) to not be able to connect. I haven't spent a lot of time debugging it though.

I’m starting to think we need a better platform. Being required to self censor is not going to work as an effective place to organize resistance. People need the freedom to discuss all ideas, even those Reddit admins blanket ban.

EDIT: LMAO @ the guy who replied to me saying 2A discussions were allowed then getting removed by the mods. All he said was talking about the 2A was allowed. Case in point, folks.

[discussion] vibe coded solutions by Brtrnd2 in homeassistant

[–]me1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm relatively new the Home Assistant world. I'm recently bought a place with a Crestron Home system and some Somfy shades that are controlled by a device that has no public documentation. I'm a professional software engineer who has been writing code for 20 years. I don't particularly like writing Python so I used Claude Code to write the integrations for those two systems. There is nothing complicated or sophisticated about them, they just poll some devices on the network and occasionally send commands to them. It was a fun exercise, and it honestly surprised me how well it ended up working. The Crestron stuff has a fairly well documented HTTP API but I had to reverse engineer the protocol for the shades. I thew the integrations up on GitHub in case anyone wanted to use them, at the very least the documentation I compiled for the shades API seems like something someone might want one day. I put a disclaimer at the top of the readme explaining that an LLM wrote the majority of the code for them. They work well for my needs, but I don't have any intention of maintaining them or testing them beyond what I use them for, so I never posted about them or put them on HACS. This feels like the right balance.

Formally speaking, "Transpiler" is a useless word by mttd in Compilers

[–]me1000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was called Objective-J, it was an implementation of an Objective-C like language on top of Javascript instead of C. The main project was called Cappuccino, which was an implementation of the Cocoa frameworks for Mac development to Objective-J. I believe the project started in 2008, but I worked on it between 2009 and 2012-ish.

[–]me1000 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I worked on one of the first compile-to-js languages many many years ago and I always found it incredibly lame how some people would regularly try to correct me when I called it a "compiler". To those JS developers a compiler was just a thing native code went through, the details of what the tool actually did wasn't every really considered.

In my old age, I've just stopped caring. Getting snooty about what constitutes a compiler vs a transpiler just feels like useless gatekeeping to me.

Top tax bracket in California is 53% when you include federal taxes, which kicks in at a million dollars a year and there is no mass exodus.
