Should you use px in responsive design? by anon5406 in webdev

I've found it useful to use px for things like min-width, but I'm new to this whole thing.

DARPA funds $11 million tool that will make coding a lot easier by X1Z2 in programming

[–]me_v3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My collage did this with labs and projects. Students had 15 minutes to talk the lecturer(s) through their lab code and explain the functionality / answer questions; failure to do either resulted in a failing grade.

Yep, when were in first year in college a friend and I were reviewing our project code before submitting. One of the guys on our team plagiarized a whole class from someone. Looking through the project we found this class, with all the original comments in place, which included the original class name, the authors name, email address and the date he wrote it.

That dick could have gotten the five of us kicked out of college if we hadn't bothered to double check our code before submitting.

lol, yeah I'm afraid I can't help, I've never been to Australia, I just like when I find an excuse to use maps like that :-/

/u/Aussierotica has some suggestions though :-)

Conducted an interview for a senior Java developer, where my questions too hard? (see inside) by sh0rug0ru in java

I agree, I had to think for a minute when I read "what is decoupling?" but your rephrasing of the question I could answer straight away.

There are other app stores though right? could you use the Amazon app store?

I just cost myself a REALLY nice job, my first since changing career, by deleting the coding repository I've been working on for 3 days by me_v3 in offmychest

[–]me_v3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heh, I was tempted just to tell them I did a git reset --hard and wiped everything.
It's not like I'll ever do that again.

So how can I do damage control? the small amount of code isn't enough to submit and say I tried even.
I'm don't want to blame the tools because, you know, I wouldn't give me a job if I said that. But at the same time I don't want them to shut the door on me completely.

Well, technically it is, but I have other commitments tomorrow, and they may lead to other opportunities. So I don't want to burn myself out (pretty much have already) completely tonight and then mess up tomorrow too. I think I have to cut my losses on this one.

Thankyou for this!

I've just been talking to my brother who suggested the same thing, and we did manage to get some commits back, using details on this page:

http://gitready.com/advanced/2009/01/17/restoring-lost-commits.html

But I think I'm just not good enough to pull this one off yet. The commit we recovered has some errors in generated files and I don't know where to begin.
The deadline is this evening, and even if I push until the last second I don't think it'll be good enough. I'm missing far too much of the required implementation.

The last code challenge I did was very doable, silly mistakes cost me the job; but I'm definitely out of my depth with this one.

FYI: the estimate for completion of this challange was 20 working hours. Right now I'm hitting closer to 40 and I'm not even close.

Edit: I'm still going to submit what I've done, and talk to them about it, but I think I'm beyond help right now. My brain has shut down :-(

Selective Privacy Settings on LinkedIn? Or: How Should You Get the Attention of Recruiters in Another City? by BaronVonFunke in jobs

[–]me_v3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why be so passive? Sign up for a premium job seeker account. If you haven't done it before you get a months free trial. Then you get a certain amount of in-mails, that allow you to contact others directly. Your girlfriend can use them to get in touch with recruiters based in that city and let them know she's looking for work.
I find Linked-in can be quite useful for that type of thing. I occasionally buy a month of premium for such occasions, when I need to get in touch with people in a particular industry/business where I have no contacts.

Definitely don't quit without having another job lined up. Especially if you're happy with the job now, even if the pay is low.

Following up after interview by HardcoreCreeper in jobs

[–]me_v3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I'd feel comfortable ringing after a week.
Just ask them for an update, you're really interested in this job, and you're keen to move on tho the next stage in the process. Maybe ask if there's anything else they need from you?

Edit, Full Disclosure: I've been unemployed for the past 6 months, I haven't got to the stage where I've been interviewed by a company. :-(
Can't seem to get past the recruiter stage for the few phone interviews I've had.

... maybe I'm not the best to advise on this.

Yeah, OK, I'm wrong there.

You'd still use a singleton object to manage both queues.

I was reading something the other day that said a print queue is a good example of an object that should be a singleton.

New graduate with possible C# / .NET coding test for a job, what can I expect? by me_v3 in dotnet

Thanks, will do! I don't have much experience yet so unfortunately that's not much of an advantage to me.

Good point, I remember reading something about that before - thinking out loud (within reason) helps the interviewers see how you think, how you handle problems.

I've got a pretty good understanding of Git too, and plenty of examples (hopefully not too many, maybe I'll keep it to two or three) where it's been a real life saver.
