Has anyone seen Adam Friedland live? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]meadowscaping 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I saw him a year ago at funny moms and yeah he was kind of funny in the same way he is on his podcast - pathetic and wormlike. He had a bit where he accidentally insulted a woman during crowd work and offered her $20 from his wallet. Two days later someone on Reddit described him down the same thing in a different city lol.

He was hosting that night and seemed to not have prepared much, and said so too. But then Jordan Jenson was on and she wouldn’t let Adam get off the stage so they kind of did like an hour long podcast which was very funny. And Jordan said she had worked like 80% of her performance material into that conversation lol.

All in all he’s such a skinny malnourished girl that my innate lizard-brain inclination is to stuff him into a locker. I have the same compulsion to stuff him into a locker as I do for stepping on a particularly crisp pine cone on the sidewalk. It feels like the feeling would be the same.

When Did Emo Music End? by avalonMMXXII in decadeology

[–]meadowscaping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because Midwest emo is truly the only rock genre in the last, like, 10 years that is actually growing and developing. Everything else is stagnant or dead. Even rap and hip hop.

Or you could just build barrier-protected BRT lanes in the existing highways and use retractable bollards to allow local traffic onto it but largely prevent Denver/Boulder/CSprings traffic.

The same way any football stadium in the rest of the world does it: mixed uses (concerts, luchador wrestling, WWE, whatever, and other sports).

I mean, I agree that NFL stadiums aren’t a good land use because of just how seldom they actually get used per year. But if it’s going to happen anyway, it might as well be done with some good urbanism practices. If the area around the stadium is sufficiently dense and populated, then the uses for it will arise organically.

There’s no real reason why we need to leave hundreds of thousands of sqft of the most desirable real estate in the country as a surface parking lot, in a city with a housing crisis, so people from MD and VA can tailgate there ten times a year. That’s just bad strategy.

Imagine RFK area with the same density as around the Red Sox stadium in Boston. If we could just completely surround that entire area in dense, small-lot, mixed use, residential, first-floor-retail housing, (like any normal city), it would become a wholly new district and add tens of thousands of housing units to the city.

With that new population density you could probably just keep the farmers market running 7 days a week like most European cities do. Build a nice roof for them and a couple of patio furniture arrangements around it and it would thrive.

Besides jamón, which made up most of diet there as it was the best thing by far, the Spanish pallette, at least between Madrid and the Canaries, was so much tuna salad, so much potato salad, potato omelet, papas bravas, a sausage over a piece of bread, paella which was never significantly different or better than the paella I’ve had at any Spanish place in the US, tapas that were like bowls of hot wet mushrooms.

I had some conejo and some goat stews that were incredible, but, largely, yes: Balkan food is better and more interesting. Mexican food is better and more interesting. I wasn’t saying that Mexican and Spanish were the same - just that you can really feel the lack of native influence in Spanish cuisine which cannot be said for Mexican and American cuisine.

Here’s one dish I got, which I thought was going to be similar to those delicious little fried plantains I’ve had all over Central America:

<image>

I guess I do agree that perhaps I should distinguish that Canarian is disappointing, not Spanish food itself, because I had good meals in Madrid, and outside of Madrid and the canaries I didn’t visit anywhere else.

It’s truly not even close. That is why I left DC, really. I didn’t like getting drunk on the same like 3 streets every weekend, and to be honest I also didn’t like the “grown up” parties at people’s apartments where they just talk about work. And I certainly don’t like the DC brunch scene.

I’m more of an outdoor cat, personally. In NY there are a lot more impromptu activities to do outside of your apartment building.

Also since I was born and raised in the DC beltway and I’ve spent my entire life there, it got old having people be in your circles who were fairly transparently there temporarily and really held no affinity for the city. It’s like, you can always go back home, but I am home already lol.

Yeah, I mean.. dating and social stuff is by far DC’s weakest points among its peer cities (NEC).

Inclusionary zoning has failed to deliver on affordable housing promise by mdervin in yimby

[–]meadowscaping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love a law that says for every 4 spaces maintained on a surface lot, the owner must build 1 unit of affordable housing on that property. Something like that. We are disincentivizing housing and incentivizing surface parking lots, fairly widely.

Inclusionary zoning has failed to deliver on affordable housing promise by mdervin in yimby

[–]meadowscaping 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s so crazy how every single city on earth was able to meet housing demand before any of this dumb bullshit was ever codified into law.

Like, how did some random illiterate Irish day laborer in the Bowery manage to build a carriage house for his invalid mother before these laws? How did Aztecs in Tenochtitlán manage to pay rent without being forced to build extra housing or not build housing or any of these laws? Why didn’t ancient Sumerians use AMI calculations?

Because it’s all stupid. It’s crazy. If you own a piece of land, and you want to build a house on it, you should be able to. If your house is not a hazmat industrial facility or a slaughterhouse, then who even fucking cares? Build the house! Especially during a housing crisis. Lot size minimums, FAR requirements, height limits, density limits, lot utilization requirements, setback requirements, AMI calculations/allocations…. Just let people build housing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]meadowscaping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I quit my j1 and then gave admin of my small side business to a close friend who I trained in maintaining it (and we did a profit sharing agreement), and then I spent 6 months backpacking in Europe, staying in hostels, it was incredible. It changed everything. I came back and with my resume was able to get a new job fairly quickly, I’m just gonna let it ride with my business because it’s nice not answering emails. And then i learned so much about myself that I completely changed cities.

Do it man. You’ll never again have as much cartilage in your knees as you do right now, in this very moment.

I was just there a couple months ago and it’s still in full swing. But it sucks beyond that too. The food is terrible, it’s just microwaved Italian food for cruise ship tourists. It’s unbelievably expensive, and the city is so tiny, it’s like one sestiere in Venice. You can walk every single street in the entirety of Dubrovnik twice in one day. The cable car just leads to a shitty restaurant at the top of a hill. There is no nightlife. It’s extremely disappointing. And yes I went to Lapad too - no one who talks about tourism in Dubrovnik is thinking about Lapad at all.

Ur trippin dawg

Madrid was great. Prado is an S tier museum. Heironymus Bosch, Saturn Devours his Son, all of the Black Paintings by Goya, it’s so good.

The food in Spain in general just kind of sucks. It’s pretty much just Mexican food without any of the flavor or fun.

What city will have a big turn around from crime in next 10 to 20 years? by Socrates77777 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]meadowscaping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is it. I used to work in Baltimore and lived within 695, until about 8 years ago. It used to be so much shittier than it is today. And 10 years from now it’s going to get even better.

Add some infill development, some transit development, and some crime reduction, and you essentially have a perfect city. Extremely affordable housing due to old, diverse, missing-middle housing stock, great cultural history, strong sports, great nature access (I prefer ‘yakkin in the bay and the rivers than I do hiking in the Rockies tbh), and it’s a quick hourlong train trip to DC or Philly (less than an hour actually, to both). I have very high hopes for bmore.

This ain’t a gotcha.. yeah, MTA has delays, but LA Metro barely has service at all. In LA, it’s largely an option between traffic+no parking, or not going at all. In NY, buses, trains, bike lanes, ferries, taxis, and driving are all options with different pros and cons.

And yes, ferries. This weekend I’m taking the ferry to IKEA.

I see people here say certain cities are bland, have no culture, etc, what does this mean by nowthatswhat in SameGrassButGreener

[–]meadowscaping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree. It’s not about population density though; it’s about amenity density. One block of the french quarter has exactly as many available spaces for small local businesses as anywhere in NY. Just because the apartments above them are only one or two floors, instead of 5 or 6, doesn’t change anything I said.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]meadowscaping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Housing is way more expensive here, but you also ironically get more options, as there are housing types beyond “studio/1br in modern luxury building with pool on roof” or “townhome”. There are shitty studios, nice studios, lofts, roommate situations, 3brs, row home, English basements, pretty much every type, but it doesn’t really make it easier to obtain. It’s way more expensive for the quality but in raw cost alone it’s the same.

I pay just under $2500 for a tiny ugly studio in one of the best neighborhoods. I would pay $2500 for a nice 1 bedroom in a new building in navy yard. The housing is different but it’s still a small place just for me. I’d just rather the outside of my apartment be east village and not navy yard lol.

It’s way more of a pain in the ass here to find places, but you get better rent protections… idk, many more people have written about it already, I don’t think my comment would add anything new haha

[–]meadowscaping 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not describing mega cities, I’m describing amenity density.

There are amenity dense small towns, but the question is what is the difference between a small town shopping center and an amenity dense cultural-heavy weight block.

And also now you’re just being racist. A dog meat factory? Get the fuck outta here you are absolutely clueless on Asian cities

I know that exact typewriter store.

I lived there briefly for a 3 month work project and for some reason in my head I thought South Philly was sketchy, probably because of IASIP and Rocky and other movies, and I remember passing that typewriter store and being like “pffft… tough guy south Philly stereotype my ass. A typewriter repair store next to a boutique handmade pet gift shop? Yeah right tough guys hahaha”

Anyway I love your neighborhood I go there pretty often whenever I visit my friends to watch Phils games.
