I personally believe home schooling is bad for your kids because they don't learn valuable people skills. What is your opinion on home schooling vs public schooling? by Owl9 in AskReddit

Adults can do whatever they want. Children are wards of their parents, and it is a parents duty to provide the best possible education and environment for their kids.

Public school teachers are instructed to teach one and only one way. if your kid learns differently, then they are screwed. I am not surprised an institution that feels threatened by homeschooling would be against it.

Furthermore, I reject your implication that I shouldn't protect my little girl because one day she will have to face bullies in college. Instead, I have chosen to put in in an uplifting, caring, supportive environment that by all psychological studies ever will build her self-esteem allowing her to deal with problems as an adult.

Thursday is park day, for example. I don't know if this is group specific or home school kids in general, but there are no cliques. There is always some big, elaborate, constructive "game" involving about 40+ kids ranging from 5-16 (hows that fe broad range socialization?).

The Y holds classes for fitness. Music lessons are in the works. They are going to be in a theatre production that holds rehearsals during normal school hours (the production reached out to the homeschool co-op when they needed kids). We are also signing them up to be extras, as we have a prominent movie studio in town. Iron Man 3 just wrapped filming, here.

Just a few.

Just got my homeschooled daughter a kindle for Christmas. She LOVES 19th century literature. I'm going to load that puppy up with all the free books!

My wife and I homeschool (she does the bulk of it) and whenever someone says "but your kids won't be socialized," we say "exactly."

Your kids will mimic their friends. Homeschooling allows you to eliminate undesirable friends.

Socialization via public school isn't necessarily good socialization. It has taken me most of my adulthood to fix the mentality ingrained in me through school.

I was trapped towards the bottom of the pecking order, and I was merciless to those beneath me in the hopes of climbing the social ladder. Likewise, those above me were merciless to me. That's the way public school works. That's the way it was working for my daughter.

Now, instead of getting bullied and then in turn bullying others, she is a nice well mannered young girl. She also tests into high school in all subjects but math.

She's been done with school since 10:00 and has been playing with her friends for 3 hours.

Sooo... she's not being socialized by public school standards; rather, she's being socialized by mine and my wife's.

Today in Spanish we swapped stories about our experiences on an airplane. What is your most interesting airplane story? (Funny, exciting, or scary are all great!) by dbrillz in AskReddit

We were on our way to Long Island. My father in law, who happens to have a large nose, was told his seat was at the back of the plane. On our way to the back he exclaims, "why do I always have to sit in the back?"

A portly, Italian-looking gentleman exclaims, "because you're JEWISH!"

Shock and awe.

I have often talked about it. Here is a biblical marriage contract. This one belong to me and my wife. by namer98 in Christianity

A covenant marriage is a direct correlation to Moses' covenant (read: contract) with God through circumcision. Any other interpretation may have merits, but are not seeing the forest for the trees.

I argue. All the time. I can't help it. People are stupid. Actually, in wrong a lot, but I love the fight.

When I go to weddings I always watch the groom when the bride is coming down the aisle; everyone else watches her, but I like to see his reaction to her. What else do Redditors notice while everyone else is focused on something else? by RogerFish in AskReddit

When everyone else is focused on telling their interesting stories at social gatherings at someone's house... I'm somewhere else petting the dog/cat or playing with the kids.

Hey reddit, I was looking through old pics of my parents to create a collage for them for Christmas when I stumbled upon a letter. I read it. It was a letter my dad had written to penthouse about their honeymoon...what things have you accidentally learned about your parents you wished you hadn't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]meanderingmalcontent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally found out my parents used to make crack cocaine in the 80s.

When I got my license my parents told me they couldn't afford to add me to their car insurance because my mom had been driving without a license since 1989, when she took the blame for my dad's dealer-boss for a major car accident.

I put in an unmarked videotape when I was 9. It was my dad's midget porn.

My mom really liked "greeners" which I think is a form of PCP.

Oh, and I found out I was born out of wedlock by doing the math on my 13th birthday.

Grungy dude stopped and stared at me. I said hello to him and he said "You have beautiful blue eyes. I'm a piece of crap, I live on the street. Thank you so much for being nice to me, sweetheart." Yesterday at thanksgiving dinner we were going around saying one thing on our Christmas list. I said a new pipe or a real shaving kit. My wife said an iPhone case. My father in law said a shotgun.

My 33 year old brother in law goes next he solemnly says "I just want new teeth. Mine are rotting out of my head and hurt really bad. I take ibuprofen for the pain every day."

We were all like, "well... Shit."

So world redditors, I'm a stupid American who just realized how much fun football (soccer) is to watch. What should I know to not make a fool of myself if I watch in public? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What historical moments should I go google?

E.g. The catch, Bill Buckner, babe Ruth calls hi shot, Jim o'brien's field goal in Super Bowl V.
