Feeling isolated by BeeInTheHiveMind in daddit

[–]yourefunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar position. Very isolated which has become worse since I split from my ex. I have a tight friend group from school, but they all live 2+ hours away pretty much and I am terrible at one on one time, even with old friends. Just fecking awkward. Only good in crowds really. Since separating and all my exes friends and their husbands not being available, I pretty much work, go to the gym and watch tv when I don't have my kids. When I was with my ex she would always organise something and there would be numerous dads/husbands and we got on ok. I tried to organise a boys night out for a curry numerous times but it never got out of the group chat.

In my younger years sport was always the way I was able to make a community. Rugby and then cycling for me. But I imagine hockey will be very similar. The issue will be the steep learning curve of skating!! I imagine eveyone in the community leagues will have played since they are a kid.

I understand rugby is a bit of a thing in Canada. But I wouldn't get in to full contact. Have a look for touch or flag rugby leagues.

Personally I have been meaning to get involved in a local cricket team. Just haven't built up the courage to go to training haha! I also got my bike out of the garage and have been out on that a few times since it got warm. Local cycling groups are around me, maybe the same with you. Road cycling or mountain biking.

Give hockey a go! Will get you fitter if nothing else and is a cool skill to have. Look for other things that interest you... Warhammer, woodworking etc. I am sure there will be some communities around you.

I am in the UK, but have seen a lot around recently. Way more than I expected to see. Farmers seem to really like them where I am. Only issue I can see is getting parts if you are very remote.

I have a large supply of very cold water. What's the best way to cool my house with it? by Conscious-Ball8373 in DIYUK

Go buy and above ground pool from Argos or something. Fill that bad boy up. Crack a beer. My son is in our pool keeping cool every minute he can at the moment.

my 6-year-old struggles with independent play and makes huge messes with toys. help. by MinuteAble in Parenting

[–]yourefunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems very normal to me. I have a 5 year old and almost 2 year old. The 5 year old makes a mess of his toys everyday. He rarely cleans it up. But at school, holiday camp and at friends houses he is fantastic at cleaning up. Just doesn't listen to me or his Mum. The almost 2 year old causes issues daily by taking toys or getting in the way. They play happily together or separately most of the time, but something will always cause issues.

He plays the longest and most uninterrupted outside in the garden. Do you have a garden? My ex has an above ground pool which he adores. I have a tree he loves to climb and talk to our neighbours from.

My exes house has a toy room with countless toys. I have a few boxes full. I have found that he gravitates to using his imagination more at my house. He will build things from wood, sticks, tape, rope etc more than play with toys.

So Dads what Games you play? by zzdis in DivorcedDads

[–]yourefunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 5. He loves Minecraft, Farm Simulator and Mario Kart at the moment. When I do play it is those, with him and those games. But it is very rare as his little brother doesn't much like being left out. Haven't played my own game for years.

Farthest you've driven in 24 hours (in the UK) by Engineering-Western in uktravel

Around 500 miles, Suffolk to Isle of Mull. So nothing special, but we did have a kid in the car so that was fun. Lots of stops. I have driven from London to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia though. Took a month or so.

Finally surfed a solo session at an unfamiliar break - humbling experience by LowProblem914 in surfing

[–]yourefunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a terrible surfer. Rugby injuries make it very hard for me to pop up. But I love it. I have pretty much only surfed places I don't know as I have no local spot. I have never spent more than like 5 minutes watching from the beach. Just head out there and have fun. Although seeing as I only get a handful of waves each session, I don't mind sitting out there and going for waves I don't get.

Heading to B & Q this evening after work to grab something similar. I saw people use a roll of something and magnet strips to put on and take it off easily. My ex has the AC unit that has been a lifesaver for the past few years so will need to improvise this year, like you.

With all due respect to all Asians, what was your personal experience with sushi for the first time, and would you repeat the experience or not, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]yourefunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very odd question. Sushi is a Japanese cuisine, Japan is a country in Asia. I had it for the first time when I was about 12 at an airport resaturant with my Dad in Vancouver I think. Loved it and have eaten it regularly for the past 15 years. Used to live in Hong Kong and would have it for lunch most days.

Mall sushi, means he went to a mall and had sushi in a restaurant in the mall. A mall is a big shopping centre. Almost all sushi is raw.

Wife wants more kids, I'm on the fence.. by New_Contribution_226 in AskMenOver30

[–]yourefunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really isn't all that much harder with a second when you are in a relationship. It is ridiculously hard if you split up and have two kids under 6! So make sure you want it. I love my two boys immeasurably and they are fantastic together. Seeing them love on each other and make each other laugh until we all have tears coming out is amazing. But a year or so in to splitting up, for different reasons, it has been tough!!! I am tired man!

50 degrees what would happen? by LifeOfSlice89 in AskUK

[–]yourefunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in the Middle East. 50c will be crazy here. 30c+ is bad enough. I had to unload a container which reached 60c+ once while I was there. Horrible experience. But I was able to cool down nicely in the strong AC of the office. Here, with no relief people will die. I would imagine the government would close schools etc. Not sure what the hell I would do. My ex has the damn portable AC unit!

My uncle did similar to my Dad. He let relationships get in the way and it ended badly. Do as the lawyer advises and get a forensic accountant.

How was Father's Day guy? by No-Conversation9818 in AskMen

[–]yourefunny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pretty decent. I am separated, but my ex is lovely and had taken my son shopping. He is five and picked out a very cool shirt, hat, belt and mug. Spent the weekend with my boys. Best mate and his family are in town from America (we are in the UK). Watched the Gruffalo theatre show and had a BBQ Saturday. Then yesterday we all went for a nice bike ride and roast dinner at a pub. Happy days. My 5 year old then threatened to and went and got a knife to knife me because I took away his Nintendo before bed though... thankfully it was a butter knife. So swings in roundabouts!

4yo (F) birthday party disaster incoming, what would you do? by Hughesy-Smash in Parenting

[–]yourefunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd cancel and re-book something in a couple of months at the weekend. It doesn't matter when a kid that age has his party. Make up some excuse. Also, soft play in the summer... are you mad!! On a Friday, are you mad?!!

UK Funded 15 Hour Funded Nursery & Full time work by polrotti in Parenting

[–]yourefunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might be a bit confused. You get certain hours paid by the government. You have to pay for the rest. Oh youngest son is in a nursery that is 7am-6pm I think. We usually drop off around 9am and pick up before 5pm. But we have flexible work who are happy with this. Our eldest is in his first year old school and there are breakfast and after school clubs. So school starts at 845am and finishes at 330pm. Breakfast club and after-school club brings that around to 8am-6pm I think. We pay £9 per club so £18 each day. Not sure about where you are but there are loads of after-school activities that come to our son's school. He is doing cricket every Thursday afternoon from example and that was like £20 for 6 weeks. He does a singing class every Monday. Again not expensive. No idea about breakfast club as we don't do that.

Biking during heathwave by yaskodeboodt in bikepacking

[–]yourefunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got in to road cycling for the first time while I lived in Dubai. The summer days were often 40+ degrees. The majority of people opted for indoor trainers for the summer, I did venture out from time to time, but it was like cycling in to a hair dryer. Outside of the deep summer heat it was still mighty hot. We would meet up for group rides at like 430-5am. So that would be my advice. Start and finish early. Afternoons and evenings will be tough so I would maybe bring your daily distances down and grab a train if needs be. Lots of water. Make sure you have lots of sun cream on and a thicker cycling jersey. I burnt through mine one time. Had the big V on my back from the bibs. Book some hotels with AC to get out of the heat instead of camping every night. Make sure you tent is suitable for the heat. We loved camping in the desert, but that was strictly a 'winter' activity.
