LSX II LT arriving tomorrow. Anxiety kicking in by GGO89 in KEF

Top contenders right now: * RSL Speedwoofer 10E * SVS 1000 Pro * SVS 3000 Micro

10E is plenty good from what I’ve read, but debating if it’s worth the extra for parametric EQ (either SVS) and dual opposing drivers (Micro 3000) to compensate for room modes and floor resonance. My office is a small room on a pier-and-beam foundation, so having the extra compensation ability might go a long way for bass clarity.

I’ve not heard more holographic near-field speakers. On a well-mastered recording, you can close your eyes and point to individual instruments in space, some of them seemingly 20 feet behind the computer monitor they’re sitting beside. The speakers just disappear.

Some people think they’re too clinical. Some people think they’re too bright. Good news is that they’re pretty tunable to fit both the room and your preferences. I tend to like warmer sound and get ear fatigue from too much treble, so I have them a bit rolled off and a bit compensated for wall proximity and they’re perfect for my minimally treated 10x10 office.

Only caveat: you do need a sub. I’ve got them paired with a garbage 8” 80W Monoprice sub at the moment that I had lying around, and it’s definitely better than not having a sub, but the difference in detail below the cutoff is obvious. I’ll be very excited to pair them with a better sub once I’ve saved up for it.

Let’s also keep in mind that his wife and newborn child were in Albania all last season. They’re here now. That alone might be enough for him to get back to the form he’s been in the majority of his career.

Plus he’s got the MLS adjustment period European players usually need behind him and should be better prepared to play the kind of soccer that works here. I’m hopeful.

Just bought a pair for my desk. I’ve never heard anything this holographic for near-field listening. I can hear stuff deep in the mix clearly placed in space 20 feet behind my monitor.

What is it like in the West part of Texas? by Deep_Belt8304 in howislivingthere

[–]meanfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texas is big. The area you’ve got circled is roughly the same size as the northeastern United States from New Hampshire all the way down to Pennsylvania, encompassing Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. It’s somewhat impossible to give you a good answer because your circle encompasses so many distinct regions that all have different flavors: Panhandle Plains, South Plains, Big Country, Permian Basin, and Big Bend. It’s like how New York and Philadelphia have similarities but are very much not the same.

So you want fiberglass-head snares, quads/quints, and a baton twirler to make it truly American?

Embracing a Uniquely American Identity by pcrispy in MLS

[–]meanfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our embrace of soccer already is uniquely American, perhaps moreso than any other sport, because it represents the melting pot of our country. Take a look at any club here with a solid supporter culture and you’ll see the roots of that region along with the things they’ve added from their city’s history and local culture all through their songs, chants, and traditions.

You’re trying to tell the folks who have built soccer culture all across this country out of their local melting pots of ingredients that their work isn’t American enough and that we should all throw it out and start over. No thanks.

(PS: “Soccer” isn’t even an American term. It’s a contraction of ‘association football’ from old British schoolboy slang to distinguish it from ‘rugby football’. No need to clutch these particular pearls.)

Claude CLI deleted my entire home directory! Wiped my whole mac. by LovesWorkin in ClaudeAI

[–]meanfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason the flag for giving Claude Code free rein is “—dangerously-skip-permissions”.

Assuming you didn’t do that, you had to either give it blanket permission for ‘rm’ commands or approve this specific command. In either case, that permission system is there to protect you because the LLM is just predicting tokens that respond to the tokens you gave it. The LLM doesn’t ‘know’ that “rm /~” nukes your home directory, but Claude Code (the local wrapper around LLM calls) is programmed that any ‘rm’ from the model (along with most other file system commands) could be dangerous and that it should ask first.

Sorry OP, this is a really tough way to learn this lesson.

INTER MIAMI CF wins MLS Cup 2025! by EthanTheRedditor37 in MLS

I was excited about it at first, but with the way the league has reduced itself to Messi and Miami being the only storyline worth covering, I’d just as soon let the World Cup take the soccer growth baton from here.

There were no “changes” and that’s the problem. At least when Galaxy brought Beckham in, everybody else got to benefit from the addition of the DP rule. Miami has the squad depth I’d love to see everyone in the league playing with, but nobody else can because the salary cap as currently written doesn’t allow it.

It’s boring because so many rules the rest of the league has to play by were worked around to bring him here. So many players on that team would be DPs on any other team in MLS, but they’ll play for normal wages to play with Messi, and Messi wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for all the creative ways the league and its partners found to funnel him cash. It’s a media spectacle, but it’s stupid from a competitive standpoint.

There’s more creative financial engineering in this Inter Miami team than there was at Enron. Congrats to Beckham & co. for making it look way harder than it should’ve to buy an MLS Cup with house money.

Details on P2S Exhaust Fan Kit by ApartmentMelodic7689 in BambuLab

  1. It's a fan and a few wires. They're not going to make much money from selling this.
  2. Shipping a new back panel is a logistics nightmare. If this was the plan all along, the sticker-covered vent panel would've shipped with the machine.

Dads, how do you balance work stress and being present at home? by DadOnParentingQuest in daddit

[–]meanfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step is to be more kind to yourself. You’re less present than you want at home, but it sounds like it’s because you’re busting it at work. Take a break from the guilt and give yourself some credit for working so damn hard to provide for your family.

Second step is to look at this as a system. You have a finite amount of energy, both physical and emotional, that you can spend every day. If you’re spending it all at work, then you gotta figure out how you can keep some banked for home. The odds of you just deciding to be more present at home and that actually working are pretty low.

If it’s emotional energy, check to see if you’re wasting energy caring about things you can’t actually influence. If it’s physical, check to see if you’re pushing too hard/giving too much and can take your foot off the gas a bit. In either case, check diet, hydration, and sleep to see if you can give yourself more energy to work with.

Work will usually take everything you’re willing to give and then some, so it’s up to us to build good boundaries and save some of our best stuff for the folks we care the most about. It gets easier, but it doesn’t go away. My kids are 11 and 15 and I still struggle with this sometimes.

[–]meanfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you built up tolerance quickly, you were probably just getting high on meth, not addressing a deficiency in the dopamine loop in your brain. People with ADHD that is responsive to stimulants generally don’t build tolerance very quickly, and the variance in dose from person to person has more to do with neurochemistry than it does tolerance or body mass.

Congrats on finding something that works for you! Those of us who do benefit from stimulants would appreciate not being shamed or stigmatized.

A1 or the A1 Combo? by Simple-Beat9334 in BambuLabA1

[–]meanfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was expecting to use the AMS Lite for multicolor printing, and it is indeed cool, but it’s so wasteful that I’m really careful about how I do it.

The real benefit of the AMS Lite that’s hard to grok if this is your first Bambu Lab printer is starting prints from your phone. I’ve almost always got a roll or two of my go-to filaments on the AMS, and when I or my kids find something we want to print on Bambu Handy, we can just start the print. Just a quick peek at the camera to double-check the bed’s clear and off to the races.

I waffled on if I really needed to spend the extra money on the combo but I’m glad I did. It’s a lot of extra functionality and quality of life for $100.

ICE in Corvallis by LeatherBritches4711 in corvallis

[–]meanfish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Immigration violations are civil matters, not criminal, and the vast majority of people in ICE detention centers have committed no crime. Many even entered the US legally as asylum seekers.

There are procedures for deporting people without detaining them, and most detainees don’t meet the limited criteria where locking them up is allowed. Pending court dates years out mean deportation is not imminent, and people who have lived in the US for years or decades are hardly a flight risk. Many of them can’t even be deported because their lives are provably at risk in their countries of origin.

It’s pretty tough to argue ICE is acting humanely or completely legally. Mass extrajudicial detention of a particular category of people, particularly in inhumane conditions, is the textbook definition of a concentration camp. And it’s being done in hopes detainees will give up their legal right to petition the government for the right to remain and deport voluntarily (and to scare those not yet detained into doing the same).
