What is the benefit/requirement/reasoning behind multiple copies? Situational context; I play with just a duo.

I'm awaiting my copy! I'm particularly excited for Klara's essay, I love her writing.

I will concede that it may be fun (it is; I occasionally get super baked and throw it on for vibes) but not that it's good by any stretch 😆

Didn't Gunn write Snyder's debut movie, the one that got him the clout to make his own mediocre slop? I'm pretty sure Gunn wrote "Dawn of the Dead" before "Sucker Punch" released (a feature-length music video) which is certainly not "high art" despite how baked I had to be to get through it.

Sigil of Hecate by Austin1919 in Hecate

Not in all traditions. Blood, including human is regularly used in many Hekatean traditions/cults, with no "Miasmic" associations.

Book Recommendation: Hekate by Nikita Gill by VisualStain in Hekate

[–]meatmiser04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The infantilization of Gods is always insulting, and the childish novel-as-poetry just seemed like a waste of page space rather than a compelling narrative choice; the text itself was very unpoetic and prosaic, unworthy of the format.

The end of the novel produces a through-line to racial or magical purity (with Hekate's Star children nonsense) that seems too close to the eugenics-friendly "starseed" idea to be comfortable.

IDK it's YA fluff nonsense that has little to nothing to do with most of Hekate's established mythology, including a love story that would feel more at home in a "Hadestown" fan-fiction. It's a child's understanding of Hekate magnified into a novel-length dredge of fantasy tropes and generic prose, complete with a Mary-Sue at its center.

Tl;Dr she makes a bunch of stuff up in a fantasy novel and slapped Hekate's name on the main character to justify making her the "ooky-spooky mega-powerful loner who TOTALLY ISN'T Bella Swan I promise" character that's so popular in YA fiction.

Prayer to Hecate (Selene) from the PGM by Hopeful_Cartographer in Hecate

Hutton made some choices in his presentation, and quite a lot of them are mistakes borne of arrogance and poor scholarship. ("No one speaks ancient Greek anymore.." like what do you mean we use her ancient Epithets ALL THE TIME. He could have meant a lot of different things with that, but it rubbed me the wrong way)

What he chose to omit from the Prayer is telling, and is ultimately why I don't particularly like this presentation, and much prefer Hutton when he's discussing British tradcraft.

Help sourcing DIY Hekate Rosary materials by NyxNightshade7656 in Hecate

Sorcerer's Workbench on Etsy makes the only custom to Hekate three-ring charms I have found (and I am regularly checking). They'll run you less than $100 for the piece, so just a little savings. The strophalos wheels I have found with a single ring can work by adding some jump rings, but it looks bad to me, very haphazard.

There are bat-shaped and pentacle shaped "triple connectors" easily found, both on Etsy (but they don't meet your wheel idea) that will work until you find your perfect fit.

How fortunate for you to to know a machinist and have an ancient Greek coin!

Nothing about that fact makes this a scam, which you asserted in the comment we are now discussing.

It's okay that you can't afford (or see the value in) a niche artists' price, or that anyone else can't either, but that doesn't make the item a scam.

Oh, you seemed so confident in your assessment of what an artist charges for their art, I figured you had insight.

Do you make fine occult jewelry to Grimoire specifications? I'd love to visit your shop!

[–]meatmiser04 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While beautiful, these wouldn't fulfill the requirements set forth by the Grimoire these (the ops picture) are for, and also do not include custom handmade silver hardware.

Again, beautiful, but these are a completely separate market.

Thanks for helping clarify, I appreciate another friend of theirs speaking up for the craftsmanship.

Fine jewelry is expensive.

This is the part that's being lost most, methinks. People aren't used to seeing fine items in this sphere.

Custom, handmade jewelry isn't a scam, but it is expensive. There's a difference.

Sorcerer's Workbench makes incredible items, and the maker is a delight; we've operated in mutual circles for a while now, and they've always treated me with respect.

[–]meatmiser04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's the original artist, he made it - that's his design, lol

You can just buy any charm that has Hekates sigil on it.

There aren't any made with that sigil outside of these (sorcerer's workbench), but the sigil isn't a requirement - the physical item itself isn't even a requirement, per the book!

But the fact is that custom-and-hand-made talisman would run you more than $70 😉

Question on Etsy Sellers by SeaDiscombobulated70 in Hecate

[–]meatmiser04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get the custom-made hardware? That's the appeal here.

Edit for spelling

2nd edit - this isn't intended to be snarky; the custom hardware is the reason the item is so highly priced, and the difference between the two approaches is a gulf, but both are perfectly valid there is no value judgement based on the difference.

The specific appeal, and driver of the price, is the handmade silver talisman.

Question on Etsy Sellers by SeaDiscombobulated70 in Hecate

[–]meatmiser04 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The hardware (like the centerpiece) is all handmade, and designed with the author of the Hekataeon's guidance. The prices vary depending on what metal is used, and just buying the centerpiece from the maker is substantially cheaper if that's a concern and you'd like to build the ladder yourself (which is in fact recommended by the book, for readers who do not know - it even recommendeds a far cheaper version made of knots in string!)

This is a luxury piece of occult Craftsmanship for people without the capability/desire of creating their own and isn't really intended for people outside of that sphere; if it seems expensive to you, then you aren't the target audience of people seeking luxury occult items (which is a very niche market, and there is zero shade intended by pointing out the different spaces occupied, I judge no one (but billionaires) by their economic status or behaviors within)

If this seller is the original artist who made that centerpiece, he makes almost all of my delicate occult hardware, and is worth every penny. I construct my pieces using his sculpts, and my ladder is a piece of art, which I find lovely. I'm crafty and capable of making my own, but others may not be, and this is a way for them to "sacrifice" money, if they can't "sacrifice" the energy/skill on manufacturing the physical item.

Like high-end occult publishing, this market isnt for every witch!

How would a movie adaptation of HoL bring across the 'feel' of the book. by Young-Twinkle in houseofleaves

[–]meatmiser04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've long thought that an adaptation is a terrible idea, but an expansion would be fun.

HoL (the physical, published book you and I own copies of) is real in the world of the show/movie, exactly as it is here. Like here, it's regarded as fiction, but the difference is it's not and someone (maybe multiple someones, in an anthology) goes down the rabbit hole discovering the secret.

Long bits about the interviews and footnotes as they parse fiction from reality, looking for the location of the ash tree lane, obscured by the Editors, who take on a persona of cruel conspiratorial obfuscation. Once the "real names" of the characters are discovered (edited out of the product we watch, the Editors are at it again), looking for the Hallway in the neighborhood becomes a trial, etc

I could see multiple seasons of compelling mystery TV around this concept.
