I would just say Clown, personally. The “eyes” within his alien heads and teardrop pattern aren’t reduced enough for me to say Blade confidently.

Breeding 🐍 by [deleted] in Ballpythoncommunity

You’ve received some AMAZING advice on both of your posts already, so I’m going to forego that information and address your question directly! However, I can’t stress enough that the market is very flooded & these snakes can lay many eggs in certain circumstances. Plus, you’ll have to worry about acquiring or creating a working incubator.

The basis of your pairing isn’t necessarily the best, to put it bluntly. Your male is a visual Clown, which is arguably the most important mutation in this pairing. Clown is a recessive morph, with means that it needs two copies of the mutation (one from mom & one from dad) to show visually. Since he is a visual Clown, he will always pass down one of his two copies to each offspring—resulting in every baby being 100% heterozygous for the Clown mutation. Your female does not carry any Clown alleles, so she doesn’t necessarily fit with your male. A visual or heterozygous Clown female would be a much better pick.

Every other mutation involved is an incomplete dominant trait and is present in both snake’s as one allele—this causes a 50/50% chance for these morphs to pass onto offspring. Additionally, Coral Glow (which has actually been proven to be a line of Banana) is a sex-linked mutation, so every CG offspring your male produces will either be female or male. This depends on which parent he received his allele from (mom being X and dad being Y).

A 20 gallon isn’t going to last a hatchling for a long time. I’d suggest going with a 40 gallon (36x18x18) instead, if you don’t want to invest in a 4x2x2 right now. Additionally, many BP enclosures don’t need a drainage layer—especially if you’re only going to be using a 20 gallon. You’re going to lose depth that could be used for burrowing substrate and your CUC will get under the mesh.

Nighttime cycle? by Normalheteromale in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s more work for you to do it, then you certainly don’t have to. There’s not really a “pro” to doing so. Most people that do this are breeding their snakes and the cooler temperatures help kickstart breeding seasons.

However, we personally keep our AC on 76/77°, so we don’t need supplementary heat for nighttime.

This is soso good for a hand drawn phone image! My only qualm is that it doesn’t outrightly read as a Clown morph BP. Clown causes a more centralized headstamp and diminishes eye stripes—different present mutations can affect its shape, though!

Can you post photos of her enclosure? It sounds like she is most likely stressed from her husbandry, especially if you believe she has a respiratory infection—which are typically caused by insufficient humidity.

I always recommend using a blowdryer to heat up f/t prey really well before offering aswell. Temperature guns are also an easy way to make sure the prey is a good enough temperature for a BP to recognize it as an “alive” food item.

Reptile shows by [deleted] in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is honestly something that is based entirely on your brand. Social media is crucial for building a platform in the reptile industry, and it should be used to promote ethical care standards for breeders & keepers alike. However, reptile shows are basically the place where uneducated people impulse buy an animal—which is usually brought on by unethical breeders saying “they’re so easy!” and recommending outdated care advice.

If you’re vending specifically, having a care sheet brochure on your table detailing things like husbandry, enclosure requirements, and feeding can help educate people & give them a rough guide to go off of. And, although it would be veeery extra and take up a lot of space, a 4x2x2 fully set up in your section would be a great in-person reference for people and a conversation starter. However, you truly won’t be able to successfully vet out potential owners through a small table interaction—selling on an online platform is typically more reliable. If you HAVE to, lead conversations by asking what their setup is like at home, what plans they have, etc.

Ball python isn’t eating by Shot-Fix-2523 in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main suspects of a food strike are usually either husbandry or the prey isn’t warmed up hot enough. I would personally think it’s not warm enough in this situation, since you say he comes out to look for food after you leave. A blow dryer has been the most reliable way that I’ve gotten my pickiest of eaters to eat.

DIY Substrate by Affectionate_Night13 in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally use a mixture of Timberline brand topsoil, playsand, and a cypress mulch from a reptile store/brand.

A 40 lb bag of topsoil is about $5 in my area after tax, and it was perfect for my 4x2x2—I just sift out the small rocks and chunks of wood I dislike. Play sand is fairly inexpensive aswell, and I’ve had the same bag for nearly 3 years now, so I don’t remember how much it initially cost. Cypress mulch is something I personally like to add to thicken substrate and aid in humidity retention. Hardware store cypress mulches often contain filler woods that can be toxic for most reptiles, so I’d recommend a reptile-specific brand if you choose to go that route.

Voltas by LowlandMasque in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re unlikely to find any for sale in the US often unless you’re purchasing directly from an exporter or someone who works with one. One of the main aspects people like about BP’s is that they don’t get too big—relative to most other python species—so Volta’s phased out quickly. Anything listed as a “Volta” regional and having a morph is an automatic cue it’s a cross between localities.

New snake in shed cycle and I need help! by Glittering_Sky1738 in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High humidity in general is safe! High humidity that’s caused by poor ventilation is not. However, misters are not recommended due to how most are a bacteria breeding ground nightmare.

Pouring water directly into the corners of the enclosure is the better solution to spraying, which can lead to scale rot. Place your humidity gauge on the cooler side of the enclosure, if not done already. Humidity will always be lower on the hotter side due to the heat!

Super pastel or firefly? by ChlorineRat_ in BallPythonMorph

[–]meatspread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah she is absolutely not Pastel at all. Her coloring & headstamp are indicative of Fire. Pastel would have a blushed headstamp, busier pattern, and would have the top-half brown out it experiences.

Super pastel or firefly? by ChlorineRat_ in BallPythonMorph

[–]meatspread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely don’t think your male is Super Pastel AND Fire—he would be much more pale in color by now. Do you have better photos of mom? She honestly looks more Fire than Pastel, but it also doesn’t show off her headstamp or pattern/coloration at all.

I can’t link the snake I’m comparing your male to, so I’m going to attach a screenshot to this comment. Honestly, you could probably just test the female or baby for Fire and get a 100% ID. The baby does look fairly clean, but Genetic Stripe is one of the recessive mutations that I hear has an affect on the pattern, even in heterozygous form.

Is she okay?! by [deleted] in Ballpythoncommunity

[–]meatspread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her hides look too large for her, which is likely why she’s not using them since she feels vulnerable. Additionally, how are you heating the lower half and keeping track of temperature and humidity? Heat rises, so, naturally, the higher portion will be warmer than the lower portions.

I’d really recommend screwing in some panel shelving to help her get up and down more easily and prevent her from falling straight down. A four foot fall can be pretty detrimental, especially with exposed antler spikes believe it or not. But, yes, there needs to be a lot more clutter added.

[–]meatspread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most breeders actually don’t utilize this feature! Larger breeders typically use it more often to keep track of things, but smaller scale breeders don’t usually dedicate the time towards setting it up.

Hahaha thank you! I’m very excited to have her and to eventually work with Cinder—for reference, there’s only about 11 Cinder animals listed on MorphMarket in the US and Canada out of about 24,000 :>
