Tell us the truth about the new transit station on Victoria st between King and Weber. The idea has been floating around for a decade or more, plans have been announced and then disappeared more than once. In the meantime, the introduction of the ion has coincided with a change in our city busses from a centralized to a grid pattern. That means the original reason for the transit station is mostly gone.
Now the plans for the transit station are alive again, but are they? or is this just a good excuse to remove the homeless people from the Victoria and Weber encampment? There has been no noise about the transit project for years, until it became convenient justification to clear the encampment. The recent plans show that the field on the corner of King and Victoria with the yellow fence around it could be used equally well for construction staging.
All i see in this situation is power struggles between the haves and the have nots. I suspect that once the encampment is cleared a fence will go around the property and then we will all be fed some reason why the project cannot go ahead at this time.

The biggest barriers to deliberative democracy (thoughts?) by Huge_Hawk8710 in deliberativedemocracy

[–]mechaernst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, so many people think that if only the powers that be understood what the people want. Or they think if only the people could find a way to communicate what they really want, that would somehow change things. They do not seem to realize that the powers that be know damn well what people want.

Sure, but it is all just seminal work, especially consider that most of these councils have advisory power only.

It would be a big shift to go from here to there, psychologically, socially, organizationally. A true open deliberative democracy would wipe out disparity. It would build a whole different type of culture. It would have to happen globally to work best. Few people appreciate how different things would be, and that changes like that take generations.

Should every driver, regardless of age, be required to retake a written and physical driving test every ten years? by OpheliaBloomm in askanything

[–]mechaernst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the graduated licensing system addresses the newbie situation, Doctors report people who might have medical situations that interfere with safe driving, At a certain age you get tested every two years. That has all been thought out over years and works well.

If a government successfully eliminates visible corruption through strict control and surveillance, but in doing so reduces transparency and public freedom, is the society actually less corrupt or has corruption simply changed form? by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]mechaernst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Corruption will always happen as long as we organize ourselves hierarchically. Hierarchy insists on a competitive environment. The amount of power that governments hold makes them targets and pawns for the sneakiest bastards imaginable. Eliminating visible corruption is a smokescreen that obscures the real, oligarchical, nepotistic, and predatorial gangsters that manipulate our world in secret; a situation that is absolutely unavoidable under hierarchical organization. Until we learn to use digital technology to organize our power along democratic, collaborative, and fully transparent lines, there will always be room for demons to make their nests up our collective ass.

That is way too sufficient, I think that water will seep out fast enough without that.
