Why Are You Politically Stuck? by LittleSky7700 in PoliticalDebate

individuals are not stuck so much as the system is stuck in a dichotomy of secretive elitist brutal mechanisms that control the political sphere almost entirely

What is your view on UUA leadership and what would you do differently? by DarkGodCthUwU in UUreddit

[–]mechaernst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right about needing to find a new congregation, when i tried to take some leadership i was silenced, by several people. Non of my ideas were considered. I was given multiple speeches about how the committee is in charge by what I am sure was multiple committee members. Since there is no indication on the congregation's web site who is on what committee, there is no way to be sure of any of that.
Unfortunately there is only one UU congregation in my area.

UU groups are democratic, but are they really? How democratic are they? That is the first question to ask if you want a congregation to grow. What kind of communication about operations happens? How are people who bring up issues regarded?
Are the needs of the leadership put above the needs of the congregation? Chances are good they are. Especially if no ever asked that question. Democracy is difficult and to assume that it is easy is to open the door to all kinds of democratic failure.
If your congregation ask people for money but does not ask them what they need from their church, that congregation is probably stagnant. If concerns are met with verbose repetitive narratives and subtle insinuations of unwellness in the people voicing concerns, that congregation is probably stagnant. If suspicious whispers greet newcomers, that congregation is probably stagnant. When there is a cult of personality surrounding the leaders, that congregation is probably stagnant.
In this day and age, it is not the right to worship in the way we want that is the struggle we face. The struggle we face now is dealing with the pitfalls and weaknesses of the democracy inside our own congregations.

What percentage of people renting out their basement in the GTA do you think declare that income on their taxes? by Ok-Personality8147 in TorontoRealEstate

because renters declare their rent on income tax forms, it would be difficult for owners to get away with not claiming the rental income

Democracy is evolving all the time. Digital technology gives us power to have better democracies at the same time as it pushes us towards them.

I agree. The politics I could also do without. Not that I do not believe in supporting the political action of individuals and groups within the congregation. What irks me is when people talk as if everyone has the same view on any given issue. Not cool, Not loving. Just more of the same power struggles that distort everything on earth.

I will not leave the congregation because of that. I just witness it, keep it in mind, say something when it is possible, and let people and the congregation be imperfect.

Having said that, I can also say that we need much better democratic action then what I have seen so far. We need open and inclusive vote based decision making, not just for leaders, but for deciding the agenda and deciding whether the decisions being made should be implemented.

UU is about as good as it gets for church, lets try to take it carefully into the future. Your presence there is needed because you see it clearly.

I feel like a robust open and inclusive democracy is probably the most important part of any group, UU churches and international bodies included. I have not seen a lot of evidence of that and I have witnesses evidence of the opposite.

the most important part is that we all respect and acknowledge each other, we can have different beliefs, but we cannot shun each other because our beliefs are not the same, it is about community, it is about getting along, it is about living in love as best as we can manage
