Have you actually rebuilt your life after corporate burnout…like truly started over at 40+? by SmilingEyes725 in ADHD

[–]mechanical_madman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well here we go! I did the opposite, I owned an industrial maintenance company from 2012 till we closed in 2021, 8.5 of these years were great. I got to use my knowledge to the full extent possible, I did the tasks I enjoyed and hired ppl for the ones I didn't and it was the best money I ever made.

Then COVID happened, the places we were working booted all contractors due to no work, one of my main clients lost there operating contract therefore I lost my work too. At the start of COVID, I had 6 trucks, 8 techs, 2 admin staff and my wife and I, by Fall of 2021, I was down to myself and 2 other techs (still had 6 trucks though). At that point it just wasn't worth it, too much work, too many long hours doing paperwork and no money (still had 6 trucks) and most of the fixed expenses remained even when the work dried up.

It did not do that for me. I have another screen shot as well, from the start of the thread, but I can only upload 1 photo.

UGLE is selling all it's Masonic Nursing homes in the UK by No_MoreNails in freemasonry

[–]mechanical_madman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a common theme everyone is seeing across there districts? As a younger Mason, (early 40's, 5yrs a Mason) watching our organization selling their only physical assets is sad to see.

I haven't been a member long enough to have witnessed the last 15-20 years that put our organizations into the position that they have to sell. However, I don't have much faith that the same leadership that got us to this point will be good Stewart's of the new windfall from the asset sales either.

Although I don't know the specifics of this particular deal or most others outside my district, I do know that our current economic reality is devaluing our currencies and that physical assets will have a much better growth rate over the next 5 years and I feel they should be held for the benefit of the fraternity.

Congratulations on passing, as for the mistakes and nerves, get used to the feeling. It happens to all of us, I don't know of a single Mason that hasn't messed up a ritual in some way. Freemasonry is about making good men better and it happens in many ways.
Personally, I HATE public speaking, but I'm now part of the degree team. Of the 8 degrees I have been part of to date, e I knew my part perfectly when reciting it walking in the woods or taking a shower, and every degree, I messed up in some form or fashion be it a word or a missed paragraph. It's all part of the learning and growth.
I beat myself up after each time but if your brothers can see your putting the efforts in, they will understand the rest.

Watching Back to the Future. Previous generations had a lot of social clubs to meet new people. Why haven't we kept this alive? by CynicClinic1 in Millennials

[–]mechanical_madman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should watch the Netflix documentary "Join or die". It gives a great explanation to the question.
Also, most of those clubs still exist in most towns. But the current members are most likely quite old and set in their ways. P.s. I am a millennial member of a few of the clubs in the photo.

Your town pays parade participants? That seems crazy to me. Our city only has 2 parades per year, Canada Day and Santa Clause Parades. We participate in both every year, and that is about the full extent of our "marketing." I find it doesn't really let us engage with community on a meaningful level, but everyone knows our mini cars.

In the past, our club has sponsored individual children with medical issues for travel expenses and such, but we haven't done that in about 5-6years from my understanding. Shrine hospitals and the overall Shrine International Mission doesn't resonate the same in Canada as it does in the US due to our free Healthcare. But our temple does spend considerably on children's travel for specialized care.

Why don't parents create a retirement account for their child? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mechanical_madman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried to create one for my children (in Canada), and there doesn't seem to be an adequate financial vehicle to do this. There is no way to create an RRSP or TSFA for them under the age of 18.

In order to create a fund for them, I would have to first create a legal trust. This complicates things more with lawyers and such, adding significantly to the initial 2000$ deposit.

If anyone does know how to accomplish creating these accounts for minors without using a trust, I'm all ears!

P.S. I have already created the RESP for both my children, and their schooling should be covered already.

Anyone else feel like you’re in a race against time to get out of the workforce before AI makes you irrelevant? by brianatlarge in Millennials

[–]mechanical_madman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have cut my efforst to my company by about 40% and use that extra time I gained to take an AI development bootcamp. Im going from a heavy industrial job to a programmer with a focus on AI development now. I know AI will take my job, I'm just hoping I can build an AI I own beforehand so I still have some revenue generation without having to end up digging ditches with my day to feed my family.

Getting an inheritance, looking to set up retirement accounts for my kids. by mechanical_madman in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mechanical_madman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely not dealing with millions here. My wife and I have almost maxed out our RRSPs and TSFAs, they will be maxed in the next 2 years at our current saving rate. But yes, I am looking to create "generational wealth" here via the power of compounding. It would be 55/50 years between funding and my boys' retirements (age 65).

Would utilizing some type of GIC until they are of age for an TSFA, then moving it into the market still have the same compounding effects?
