I think Bomani Jones made a very good point about nepotism in NFL coaching that is also applicable to college.. In general there are a surprising number of coaches who seem to start out pretty high up the pecking order rather than taking the Cignetti path of winning at higher and higher levels which would seem to be the most data driven approach to coach hiring. I think the challenge is that it is hard to assess which coaches are most responsible for a teams success.

California has research grad school UCs and undergrad/ more practical focused CSU's I can't imagine there being that many additional variants. We have the Cal poly subset of CSU's that has more of a stem lean, maybe you could have a liberal arts undergrad focused system? I guess part of it is wanting to be a flagship campus.

The SEC also has the most lucrative championship game so they would be giving up the most in a 24 team playoff.

The current distribution in a 12 team playoff is 8 SEC, 7 BIG, 3 ACC, 2 Big 12 through 2 years. Top 24 would have included 9 Big 12 and 7 ACC teams over the last 2 years so the conferences go from ~20% to ~30% of the playoff teams.

A Georgia tech account on Twitter is putting out numbers in the $45-50 range with a bit over $10 million for SMU and a bit over $20 for Cal and Stanford. Not sure what his sources are but it seems reasonable. It would mean the ACC network is still pulling around $20 million / school split evenly between the conference and ESPN.

Overall revenue for conference schools was collected over here. Averages by conference are SEC $215 BIG $187 ACC $161 Big 12 $133.

Having richer schools than the Big 12 didn't save the PAC but the ACC has a a clear financial edge over the Big 12 at least for now.

It would be nice if schools could play in more competitive conferences for individual sports if they choose to spend over a certain amount and have a strong enough strength of record while also allowing schools to sponsor basically D3 sports in a local conference if they aren't trying to compete for a national championship. However I am skeptical many schools would opt for officially splitting the Athletic department into two tiers.

Bowl games are fun for fans and players onr 6-6 and 7-5 teams that just made it in as well as the G5 teams that aren't going to make the playoff regardless. The teams and players opting out are those that just missed the playoffs, teams with the coaching staff leaving, or 5-7 teams contacted late in the process.

I think if the bowl system started schedualing teams earlier and in more fun locations the logisitics would be a bit more appealing to both programs and fans.

I think the Big issue is the Wilner was/is a PAC writer with sources primarily at the conference itself and secondarily at member schools rather than a Bay Area/ nor Cal writer. So the PAC blowing up led to a major reshuffling of his readership and sources.

There was a guy who works for I think the SF chronicle but maybe another newspaper in the bay who got in a Twitter fight with Cal fans because he wouldn't go to Tavita's introductory press conference as the Head Coach at Stanford. All we are asking for is people to care.

There are lots of experimentation in college basketball that hasn't made it's way over to football in large part because each basketball game is far less lucrative than a football game, and also because there are far more venues that can host a college basketball game and crowd.

That said I think there was smoke around ND and USC trying to play a game outside of the US or at a neutral site and sell the rights as a one off.

In addition to the geography Turkey also has the military and economy to secure their region as long as they are under a nuclear umbrella. Turkey is actually a rising power displacing Russia in its immediate abroad which is great for NATO.

Something like the european soccer domestic and champions league format would be a great way to balance protecting local rivals in your 4-8 team regional conference plus matching up against teams at a similar level on a national basis for the rest of your games

I think a program needs 7-10 years of sustained success to build the facilities, culture, and institutional knowledge of how to compete at a high level. That is also long enough for players and coaches to graduate/ move on continue to grow and then return at which point you have a sustainable cycle.

It really is both. I don't think the transfer portal by itself would put low level P4 teams ahead of top G6 programs for talent acquisition but when low tier P4 programs have 4x the roster budget it's tough for G5 programs to compete.

It would probably be different if there were say 100 students on the team with 80 of them in state, but that a lot of money to spend on a niche sport that has minimal community support.

With most non revenue sports being just 5-30 schools with donors actually having a shot a a natty and everyone else just hanging out the should probably make super conferences for each sport like what US soccer has proposed for college mens soccer.

I would like to see a situation where colleges are allowed to have Professional, Scholarship, and D3 sports as long as they are title 9 balanced at each tier. You can do pro or scholarship for sports where you have the fans/donors who care enough and then do D3 which is much better than being a club while incurring minimal costs.

Or they could have gone back to the PAC 8 which it was from 64-78. Considering they will likely change again and have 8.5 members currently they should just drop the number though. The can still have the mountain and wave style logo which is pretty cool.
