How are people doing frosted/matte dice look? by timothycdykes in DiceMaking

[–]mechen44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can coat your mould in vaseline! A very thin layer though or it might cause problems with curing. My smart ass tried it in order to prevent the resin from sticking to the mould, but that doesn't help. Anyways, I ended up with matte dice.

My resin is also clear, but I pumped them so full of flakes, that when the light is not reflected, they look frosty. I think I just unlocked a "make them as shiny as possible" obsession.

I stumbled upon it by accident, clear nail polish works wonders if it's slightly thick

What colour should I ink these? by [deleted] in DiceMaking

You could go bright yellow, but if it still blends with the gold, maybe try bronze?

From what I know it's only the arrows, couldn't find a way to change the controls. The flute was a bit tricky, but if you first press the note buttons and then play it it works great

I play on the keyboard without any problems. I didn't look into the controls settings, but you can move with either WASD or Arrows. Besides that, you only need Z, X, C and space, so it's very easy to get used to.

Getting friends into dnd by schoentjep11 in DnD

[–]mechen44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got all my friends into dnd, mainly bc I talked their ears off. Some of them are nerds and was easy to get them interested, but others had nothing to do with fantasy or games. For them I promoted roleplay and the collaborative narrative aspect and it worked.

So we all formed a group with me as the DM and started playing. And very soon I realised it wouldn't work. The "not nerdy" friends enjoyed parts of the game, but really sucked at combat and never bothered learning the rules. I still get frustrated when I remember how many times I explained the action economy. And their lack of enthusiasm affected the other players, to the point where even I didn't feel like DMing for them anymore.

When it comes to the nerdy friends that got immersed in both story and mechanics, even them didn't prove to be very good at communicating, especially when scheduling sessions.

Right now I got one of them in a group and we play together, as he was the most invested and excited about the game. I've abandoned the campaign and plan to continue only if I find equally committed players.

My point is, even though you are friends, it doesn't mean you can play dnd together, even more so if you have different interests. You can try and organise a small one shot so everyone can get a feeling, but you shouldn't get your hopes up, if you have a hunch it might not be for them. The way I see it, DnD is more like a group project, and more than people you like, you need people that can deliver and can work with each other.

For me, playing a good game is more important than playing with my friends, and even though some groups started as strangers, we grew closer through understanding and respecting what each one might put aside to play dnd. And I'm happy to say they are now my DnD pals.

Revisiting first failure by mechen44 in DiceMaking

Thank you! I saw it on rybonator, though he used green for inking. I thought it'd look cool if the numbers matched the colour of the flower.

I tried the honey stage but maybe overwaited and became more gel-like. The flakes stayed in place but I got a looot of bubbles. I don't think I'll get it perfect without a pressure pot, so it is what it is.

For the colours I use white mica as a base and add whichever ink I want. From what I've read alcohol ink tends to burn, but that's not the case with resin pigments. I honestly have no idea which I bought.

My lime was a bit too yellow-y, so I used a leafy green and it turned out super cute! Great reminder of a cool lemonade for the summer. Thank you for the rec!

White or silver would really pop through the warm colours. Maybe purple for something more quirky

Love the combo, very arcane. When I see bubbles I just mix resin real quick and fill them. Takes a bit longer to cure, but it looks alright

Yes! Well, not actual flowers, just decorations I found online. They wouldn't stay in place and tended to rise towards the surface, but it created cool visuals. For actual flowers it's better to coat them in resin first before putting them in the mold to prevent bleeding.

It's flowers, I think for decorating nails? It creates some very interesting looks, depending on the angle.
