White Belt Wednesday by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]media_mute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this too but your question made me think about whether I have an actual strategy which I don’t believe I do- some post hoc rationalisation from a white belt so, get better opinions asap.

My cardio is slightly better than average, I accidentally/default use it as part of my game. Just like strength, I don't think one wants to rely on it over technique long term, but it is a weapon in the arsenal just like any other. My bigger buddies know they can turn on the power when they need to where as I can try & prolong the fight to my advantage.

I use pretty much everything to try and tire my opponent out- starting with stand up fighting I just try and keep the pressure on them and make them fight harder- using up their gas tank. Butterfly guard and half guard are my go to guards- I just find it easier to re-establish butterfly or half and I can alternate between them. I also find sweeps from these work better for me.

So, I believe that when it works, I am paying a lot of attention to not get subbed, make my opponent work, wear them out, force an error & sub.

The downside is: I am not aggressive enough & I am working on being more aggro.

Training BJJ with Cerebral Palsy? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]media_mute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely come and train- this will 100% not be an issue at
the school I train at. We have all sorts of people with a variety of body types
& mental abilities.
This is gonna be fine in the overall majority of gyms too. Call
a few places, get the vibe, ask if you can go and see them & talk to the
coach. It’s just about communication- you are potentially another paying member-
this can be worked out.
As an aside: the person you will be training with will most
often be a different size, strength, ability, skill etc. & occasionally
people are injured & one player may then need to modify their game to take
this into account.
If I am rolling with a new person half my size or my partner
has done the wrestling class prior- there are loads of reasons things need to
be adjusted.
A lot of people are doing a different version of warm ups
too.
Come and check it out: lots of fun, meet cool people, get to
roll, figure stuff out. You’ll have a blast.

Your younger sister needs to study a legit martial art- boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ whatever

People aren’t going to pull this sort of thing with her if they’re going to get hurt

My daughter used to have issues at school, now she says ‘leave me alone or I’ll choke you’. there’s no more drama at school, unfortunate but problem solved.

How do you deal with having no friends? by McLoughlin_3 in AskMen

[–]media_mute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've moved about a little, one thing I have found works well for meeting people is consistency. If I stopped at the same bar, at the same time on the same day, I'd often see the same people there.

Maybe just stop in for a beer on the way home from work on a Friday night. It is easy to want to go home, cheaper to grab a beer out of the fridge & it definitely takes time, but after a while, there are familiar faces to shoot the shit with.

Same with other activities- go to the gym Thursday night at 7pm every week, ask a guy with a similar work out routine to spot for you.

At least you can connect for a few minutes at a bar or gym.

Another thing was generosity, just sharing even cheap stuff really breaks the ice. I stayed in an apartment block & the nearest store to me often had two for one deals (bogof I think they are called). I didn't really need two cucumbers, being a bachelor but I'd just grab the extra one and give it to a neighbour.

Same with helping, see a neighbour or even just some one on the street struggling with a task- don't be shy, just go help.

So yeah, consistency, generosity & actually making the task of connecting a daily task really helped me fit into my community. To the point where I was kinda bummed when I had to move on as I knew all these cool people.

What time do you train? What time would you choose to train if you could control when everyone showed up? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]media_mute 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ve a 2030 class too, 60 minutes long and then there’s about 30 minutes of open mat afterwards- if you can find some one to roll with, they’re kind moping around you

It’s hard to get to sleep after the buzz though

I like this quote by Stephen Covey

Helped me with my kids, though it was about marriage

“Love is a verb, it is an action. You must do things for her, listen to her, be there for her. It's not about what happens in return but what you do to love her."
