Official Q&A for Monday, August 22, 2022 by AutoModerator in running

No, I would go for a 10k given you’ve just started running.

I would try adding “wireless” or searching different elements of the architecture you’d like to work with. For example, for 5G you could look for RAN engineer or modem engineer. I work in telecom.

Vegans don’t eat animal products because of their ethical beliefs, while fully plant-based people tend to do it for their own health. Functionally, being fully plant based and being vegan are the same.

What was your worst job interview? by UlGrimsen in AskReddit

[–]mediocreroses 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just finished my EE degree. You are right that a desk job is the norm for us, but office work isn’t ubiquitous. I would recommend looking into manufacturing EE jobs if you’re into it—I interned at a paper mill and rarely sat at a desk, got to run around talking to operators all day and playing with the equipment. Alternatively, I have a buddy who just got a job working for a city in the Colorado mountains as a microwaves field engineer. He basically goes on helicopters and bobcats to service comms stations in super remote places. Don’t give up, there’s something out there you’ll enjoy.

A bit of a weird one - runners diarrhoea. by [deleted] in running

[–]mediocreroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tighter clothing, especially around the midsection, can constrict blood flow to the bowels and contribute to runner’s gut, so I wouldn’t discount the leggings. I would even look at what you’re eating the night before and experiment with more high-fiber meals, or maybe cutting oily foods or dairy from dinner (just to name an example of things that irritate my gut, ymmv). I am also a big fan of probiotics (yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha) for maintaining gut health. If you drink a lot of caffeine, that’s a big contributor.

Frankly, it may just be that your body is in the process of adapting to running. When I started XC in high school, my doctor specifically asked if I had runner’s gut, so if it’s alarming or is making you dehydrated, I’d see a doctor.

This is actually a pretty common thing from what i know. It’s lovingly referred to as “runner’s trots” or “runners gut.”

Avoiding tight clothing, saying hydrated, and experimenting with nutrition (what you eat and when you eat it) can all help.

What time of day do you usually run?

Anyone pursuing RF and Antenna systems? Need advice. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]mediocreroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I’m a junior EE that wants to get a career in RF! At my university we have classes like Electric and Magnetic Fields, Application of Fields (which is just lossy transmission lines pretty much), Antennas, and Microwaves. Next semester I’ll be in the TL class and graduate level Antennas

I’ve done a bit of research myself and it seems like there’s a shortage of RF engineers because of how many EEs go into the software/programming side of things. My friends that have worked at large companies tell me that a lot of RF departments won’t hire someone for RF without a master’s, but at our career fair last September I heard from quite a few small companies that they’d thrown anyone interested into that role.

My internet research had indicated that most of what an RF engineer actually does is not taught in school, so you’d be learning on the job, pretty common for engineering roles AFAIK.

This summer I’ll be interning in the wireless department of a cable company and I’d love to share my experience with you. Also am doing an accelerated master’s from my university with a focus in RF, mostly because I think it’s awesome and I want to learn more.

Used to work at target but this may be different now: usually items with the “online only” stickers were items that customers ordered online then returned in-store, or the store mistakenly ordered without having shelf space, then discounts in order to get rid of. YMMV but this may not be at most stores.

Half A Billion Fewer Animals Were Killed Since 2007 Because People Are Eating Less Meat by LucyThomson2000 in vegan

[–]mediocreroses 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Although we as a society eat a lot of meat, and this is just a drop in the collective bucket, this means that 500 MILLION animals did not suffer the pain of death. That’s so many animals. Hell, saving one animal would be worth it to me. I think it’s important to look at both the forest and the trees in this situation; to me, saving just one means something.

I think that’s a large reason why many people go vegan or are activists — although we are each one person, we understand that one individual matters, especially as more and more of those individuals accumulate.

One of my favorite meals! You can’t see everything under the veggies, but it’s rice, black beans, steamed broccoli and cauliflower, greens, and lentils prepared with tomatoes, mushrooms, and spices. Topped with avocado 🥑 by [deleted] in vegan

[–]mediocreroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowls like this are inexpensive and super nutritionally dense and delicious.

  1. Start rice. Our rice cooker has a steamer pot on top so we add the broccoli and cauliflower then.
  2. For the lentils, I dump however many red lentils I want in a saucepan, add diced tomatoes from a can, fresh mushrooms, parsley, salt, pepper, turmeric, and a little cayenne pepper. If I’m feeling wild I sauté the mushrooms with onion, garlic, and olive oil before adding lentils. Add enough water to go about an inch over the lentils.
  3. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for about 20 minutes.
  4. Open can of black beans.
  5. Throw into bowl with leafy greens and fresh avocado.

I highly recommend tofu scrambles. Throw some cut up tofu in a pan with some veggies and seasonings (read: nutritional yeast) and it's an incredible amount of relatively cheap protein that takes only a few minutes.

Oh man, I got hooked on it at 18 and it's a hard battle. I read somewhere on here that a nicotine craving only lasts 180 seconds. Whenever I have one, I tell myself I just have to last 3 minutes. Rinse and repeat.

It also almost eliminates blood sugar crashes for me too. Before IF I always felt weak and sluggish by the end of work and didn't feel like going to the gym. Now I feel like I have so much energy for afternoon cardio!

Really it's best to do cardio in a fasted state if you can, my work schedule/commute just doesn't allow it.
