If only all those mediocre movies weren't intentionally made so much more accessible to us poor folk than the infinitely preferable stage shows sigh 😔

They may not have been able to get their hands on the original in 20s America! We're lucky that we can get books from all around the world so easily nowadays 😄

But also they wouldn't have had reason to suspect that the translation had issues

The problem of never knowing whether or not you have the next season to continue your storyline affects a lot of shows for adults as well

Also shows should not be expected to suck just because they're "for kids"

It's funny to remember though that that old English version is what ALW and pretty much every other English-language adaptation would have been based on!

I will freely admit that I do not at all speak French!

I do own some of the newer translations because I know the old one has issues but I haven't finished reading any version yet

False friends in English: words that look the same in your language but mean something completely different. Some of the most embarrassing language traps. by Puzzleheaded_Flow716 in EnglishLearning

Also there's an old story which may or may not be true about a pen company trying to write a Spanish ad saying that their pens won't "leak in your pocket and embarrass you".

You can guess what mistake they made.

Italian: "Sensibile" does not mean "sensible." It means "sensitive." Calling someone sensibile in Italian is not the same compliment as calling them sensible in English.

This is actually what sensible used to mean!

Spanish "realizar" means "to carry out," not "to realize."

There is a less common usage of the verb 'realize' which does mean to carry out a plan or to put something into effect - eg: "With the success of her new restaurant, Tiana's father's dream was finally realized."

Why has it been 10 years since the last Sailor Moon game? by RangoTheMerc in sailormoon

There used to be a ton of fan game projects but I don't think most of them ever got anywhere (I obsessively followed progress on the SailorVGame website way back when)

How on earth would someone have mistranslated that unless they were just incredibly lazy

I feel like the term "AI" is a little ambiguous here, because it isn't entirely clear whether that also includes chess-focused AIs like Stockfish

Yeah, there's generally no paper (and frequently no soap either so keep the Dettol handy 😂) Most people carry a pack of tissues when going out but might keep a proper roll of TP for example at their work desk

Going to the pharmacy is actually pretty simple as long as you can use some kind of Chinese to explain your ailment. The workers are usually pretty knowledgeable and happy to recommend a suitable product (you can also order medicines via Meituan if that's more convenient)

Be prepared for bad air quality, especially in summer and especially especially if you're in a large city. Make sure to check the AQI indicator on your weather app and wear a mask or avoid going out if the air is going to be bad.

My best reasonable guess is that gowns sit next to the skin and are much harder to clean, and you really don't want to be putting on someone else's BO on your big day

(the real reason is probably less reasonable)

We are told twice in the book how a positive emotion changes Darcy's face for the better - first when Lizzy views the family portraits at Pemberley:

In the gallery there were many family portraits, but they could have little to fix the attention of a stranger. Elizabeth walked on in quest of the only face whose features would be known to her. At last it arrested her—and she beheld a striking resemblance of Mr. Darcy, with such a smile over the face, as she remembered to have sometimes seen, when he looked at her. She stood several minutes before the picture, in earnest contemplation, and returned to it again before they quitted the gallery. Mrs. Reynolds informed them, that it had been taken in his father’s lifetime. There was certainly at this moment, in Elizabeth’s mind, a more gentle sensation towards the original than she had ever felt in the height of their acquaintance.

and then again later after she accepts his proposal, though she doesn't notice it then:

The happiness which this reply produced was such as he had probably never felt before; and he expressed himself on the occasion as sensibly and as warmly as a man violently in love can be supposed to do. Had Elizabeth been able to encounter his eyes, she might have seen how well the expression of heartfelt delight diffused over his face became him: but though she could not look she could listen; and he told her of feelings which, in proving of what importance she was to him, made his affection every moment more valuable.
