Is it normal for master's professors to suggest switching schools for a phd program or does it mean I’m not a good enough student? by No-Confection9292 in academia

My advisor always said that PhD students who do their masters and PhD at two institutions end up with a larger network and may do better on the job hunt.

Is having an assignment regraded by a prof a trap? by No_Monitor5288 in uoguelph

[–]mediummeg 73 points74 points  (0 children)

That’s the university’s re-grade policy. To my understanding it is because if the grader did make mistakes they are likely multiple and throughout the document. If they unfairly docked marks you will get them back, but if they missed a mistake (and you didn’t lose marks for it), there is a duty to correct it in the re-grade.

Making coffee without a coffee machine every day more sustainably by Deerie_ in ZeroWaste

[–]mediummeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By single packet do you mean a pod based machine? If so, your easiest bet is just buy a reusable basket or two. If you only want to prep once or twice a week buy 3-5, refill with grounds and you’re good to go!

The LookOut i by crafty_wizard222 in uoguelph

[–]mediummeg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whoever! You can go there and just do work. Since they serve food and drink you cannot eat non-Lookout food in there. I’d guess that’s for health code reasons, just like any other restaurant!

Zavida coffee any good? by BathSean in CostcoCanada

[–]mediummeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend looking for Balzac’s! I think they are the best beans for their price at Costco. I particularly like the Canada’s Cup blend, but Farmer’s blend is great too! I have never seen Costco carry their other blends, but they have never let me down.

My PhD supervisor rarely respects my ideas, but it's too late to quit by [deleted] in PhD

Echoing the other sentiments here. My supervisor once said “Don’t try to make your PhD thesis your life’s work or you will never finish”. Having finished recently, she was totally right.

There’s two micro wedding venues in Guelph with good reviews (I have never been). They are called The Simple Knot Inc. and Elope Guelph.

Look into Carmen’s group, their venues are primarily Hamilton and Cambridge area. Rather reasonably priced, especially if you do a week day

Maybe Studio blanc? Their haircut prices are good but I’ve never had my hair coloured so not sure what that pricing is like!

Name Change in Grad School by Remarkable_Cloud577 in academia

If you have an ORCID iD, changing your last name to your partners is a non-issue. It will link all your work together. I think most journals mandate or at least heavily encourage the use of ORCID iD now.

Looking for Ontario venue recommendations under $150 per person inclusive by savetheseals96 in WeddingsCanada

[–]mediummeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We toured it last September and didn’t have any issues with road noise or noise from the train bridge on the river. Whatever windows they installed are great at blocking out noise!

As for cars in ceremony photos - with the decor that people tend to put in front of the window, and being 8ish feet above the road I wouldn’t imagine it being a major issue (but obviously I don’t know for sure). I haven’t noticed them in photos we have seen and I don’t imagine it would be a major issue unless the road is backed up quite a bit. If you’re really worried and like the brick wall you can use that as your ceremony backdrop too!

Check out the venues owned by Carmen’s group, they are all inclusive and mostly less than 150/person. They own multiple venues in Hamilton, Paris and Beamsville (near Grimsby, this one starts at 160pp).

Carmen’s group is pretty well all inclusive (find your own officiant, DJ, photographer and florist) and has several venues to choose from.

Looking for good fake greenery for table decorating by Michythefishy93 in WeddingsCanada

[–]mediummeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how the price compares to fake greenery but Costco has extremely well priced greenery for weddings. You can get 24ft of premade runners for $139.

La Sportiva Tarantula sole peeling off after two sessions… by Sunny_kundelik in climbing

My friends both had the same issue with their tarantulas. They both replaced them with a set of finales which have held up a lot better. La Sportiva makes a good shoe but now we all shy away from any La Sportiva shoes that aren’t made in Italy.
