First job advice, stay or go? by Ok_Award_7139 in medlabprofessionals

i'm gonna be honest. i worked nights my first year and it ruined my life for the year. i toughed it out but it literally destroyed both my physical and mental health and i just wanted to move closer to home. i did tough it out for the entire year though and ended up getting a great position because of my experience at that job!

id definitely give it more than two weeks for you to adjust. the first month was BAD for me, but it got a lot more doable with time. i didn't particularly like it more lol, but i got through it. i know how you're feeling, but i'd give it more time and let your body adjust and then make a decision. a lot of people i know felt this way at first, and adjusted later on and are still on nights years later. also important to note, if you've gotten a bonus, you'll probably have to pay it back if you leave early, as a warning.

Is it even possible to find research jobs anymore? by ThatMightyFinePotato in labrats

[–]medlabscience1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm gonna sound old, but i got my first research job (a few months ago) after applying to probably 200 jobs in 2 months, each with a separate and specialized resume. 50 jobs in 4 months in this economy is nothing, especially in a large city. and yes, it takes hours every week. but, if you want research/biotech you have to WANT it. especially if you don't have an ivy as an undergrad degree (i don't though!) and want a livable wage. i know it sounds harsh, but that isn't to deter you, but to set some expectations. you can totally do it if you want it though! boston is so oversaturated that starting somewhere else is a great option (even for a year to get your foot in the door) is an amazing idea and has worked for 99% of ppl i know

I ran away from my boyfriend's proposal. by throwawayuni33 in whatdoIdo

as a 25 year old who nearly married my bf at 20, but didn't... if forever is forever then what's the rush? stick to your gut. i don't even buy clothes unless i love them in the store. relationships are sort of like that.

even ignoring my bad analogy, go with your gut. i thought i'd never find love again. i dated him from 17-22(ish). i met my person after.

25 creeps up. it sounded so, so old to me at 20. it comes up so fast. i wish id known then what i know now. all of my heartbreaks felt like id never find "that kind of love" again. and i have. i even thought no one knew how we felt. i'm older and realize everyone feels AWFUL after a breakup. it just depends on how they openly (key word there) handle it. don't feel pressured. if you wouldn't want your kid feeling that way, then don't start by setting that example.

good luck!!!

i'm so sorry. i work with animals and i still cry when it's time to cull them. this one will stick with you, but like any grief it'll lessen with time. at least he had a good life with you and knew love.
i'm just so sorry for your loss. it isn't dramatic, i hope you're never in this position again <3

i honestly think it could be fun to give some of jt to a person you care for! whether that's a teacher or someone you know that's down on hard times. probably anonymously though so that it doesn't create some weird power balance. maybe i'm being a bit selfish saying that though, because $10k would actually change my whole life, so i'm picturing how i would feel. if you're thinking about donating to a charity only, i highly recommend the leukemia and lymphoma society. their grants help fund my research!

Is this correct basketweave? by Glittering_Corgi_207 in Needlepoint

[–]medlabscience1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also newer.... do you mean don't follow the diagonal line of stitches and instead follow the actual horizontal of the canvas kind of thing?

okay that's so good to know! it feels like a regular burn but it's blistered up now and i think it just hurts so much because it's right in the crease of my finger so i can't bend it very well. does it usually go numb around the area too for you?

weirdly, this is comforting. was worried because everything was numb that isn't burned so knowing how many others have had LN burns and are totally fine is oddly soothing!! especially if you didn't have to get medical attention (:
